That bad? Wow.

Fun fact about Josh Malerman: the guy wrote 20+ novels prior to Bird Box getting published. Now he just has to revise/edit what he's been sitting on for years.

Which makes me wonder... Maybe the Bird Box sequel was something he wrote recently at the urging of his publisher.

Huh. Why is Purge 2 on this, but not Purge 1?

I believe most people consider the first Purge movie to be the the weaker movie

That's correct - Anarchy was better received, was a bigger commercial success, established stars for the franchise (namely Frank Grillo), and set the tone for all future Purge films moving forward and didn't rely on heavy continuity with the first film besides the general premise.

Should I watch Purge 1 before 2?

Or can I jump straight to 2?

Just watching 2 is absolutely fine. Trust me, I wouldn't have put it without 1 if I didn't think so.

So far I loved 1, liked 2, and was lukewarm on 1.

Still haven't hit a bad one yet (not counting the ones I saw years ago and hated).

Yeah I have around ~24 of the films ranked so far (and seen 4/6 of the others) and of those 24, there's 2 I didn't care for.

When I started, I was 99% positive MYSTERY MOVIE X that I had already seen was going to take the bottom spot, but I have now sadly found a movie on this list that I previously hadn't heard of that is likely going to be nice and snug in that final spot even though I still have like 15 movies to watch/re-watch.

There is one movie now I really didn't like and a handful of others that were varying levels of "this is not very good but I don't completely hate it". Most of the list so far though has been a lot of fun.

Cool to hear some sporadic thoughts! I have a few guesses as to what movie that might be Suprak but I'll keep the guessing to myself for now.

I'm through 16/30 on reviews.

-I did a re-watch of one that basically confirmed it will still be my #1
-2 of them are hot garbage
-Only two I think are truly great, but a bunch that I like/really like

My computer broke again :D

Luckily there's still a month to go so I just hope it won't affect things here too much.

Never realized they made a full-length spinoff of the first V/H/S segment

I'll have to check that out, don't know how well it would do as a full movie but I dig the actress playing the succubus

^ The succubus freaks me out man, but shes so unnerving that her segment boosts the overall ranking for v/h/s which...isnt one of my favorites. I didnt know about the spinoff either but I would probably check it out

apparently the sequel isn't found footage which actually makes me more tempted to see it

Glad you guys mentioned V/H/S... I thought I'd seen it, but what I saw was V/H/S2 (which didn't wow me aside from the "Haven" story, which was great)

Time to watch the original V/H/S.

Happy to hear that! I hope some of these movies that people hadn't seen before rank high.

But I still think I know what the board will rank as the Top 2, and it's going to be 2 films that probably everyone had seen prior.

After watching Curse of Chucky, Id be fascinated to know why it was selected for the list.

I'll tell you! - because it was a huge, generally well-received return for an iconic horror franchise and spurned a Chucky renaissance with eventual sequel, TV series, reboot, and even a Universal Halloween Horror Night highlight.

I'm a little surprised ABCs of Death didn't make the cut, though I suspect it came close

Yeah it was actually a toss-up between VHS and ABCs, two influential horror anthologies released in the same year (and both even have a Ti West feature!) but I feel VHS has more lasting impact - bigger franchise and all of its creators have truly become some of the most iconic of the 2010s moving into the 2020s.

I saw it drunk with my friends at a Halloween party and it was absolutely glorious. Dont think it would hold up as well watching it alone and sober.

Oh it was nothing against the film, I was just surprised to see it over more notable films. It would have been nice to see some Mike Flanagan here, each of his films are worthy of inclusion. He even directed the most improved sequel of all time lol.

Agreed. Doctor Sleep is the most glaring snub IMO.

What other Flanagan movies would you recommend? I thought Gerald's Game was decent and Hush was mediocre.

That's where having 40 movies would've really benefitted this list. Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep were both on the shortlist and DS was still on the list up until I had to cut 3 more films. It being a sequel to The Shining carried it far but I ultimately gave DS the snub because it wasn't very successful at the box office unfortunately.

Honestly I'd rank Doctor Sleep as the best horror film of 2019 (unless you count Joker), and that's saying something because 2019 was a loaded year for horror.

Oh yeah, I loved it too! I love all of Flanagan's work and the more I think about it the sadder I am I didn't include one. Hell I would've included Hill House if I could have!

The Doctor Sleep movie is legit better than the book. Probably my favorite Stephen King adaptation.

It is very possible that I came in with the exact same idea at the top and wound up seeing the same film Id never heard of as well that is now ranked firmly at the very bottom of my list. I gave it a rental and would definitely call it one of the worst movies Ive ever paid money to
see.
