Another edition of Gauntlet/Board 8 Ranks down in the books; that means, of course, it's time to start up the next one! This will be my first hosting gig since I ran 1990s Horror which was almost three years ago at this point. Even though I missed the past few rankings due to time constraints, I'm excited to be back and even more excited to again be hosting a project of which I have endless amounts of passion for.

The theme is 2010s Horror Movies; I have personally curated 30 of the most popular & influential horror movies of the past decade that offered us frightening intrigue & terrifying mystery through an often tumultuous & uncertain decade. When viewed in a vacuum, the transition of horror from the 2000s into 2010s almost seems to happen overnight. The jingoistic anxieties inherent in torture porn, overly pumped out horror reboots and remakes, and self-serious violent grit transformed itself into something more introspective, quiet, and smart whilst simultaneously retaining a broad appeal. Horror movies became surprise blockbusters by sticking close to what scares audiences while adding a touch of comic book style interconnectivity and hype; horror satires veered between gore & comedy while providing much needed critical assessment to the genre; dramas cross-sected with horror giving a critical prestige rarely seen in decades prior; and internet culture and streaming spread the messages of these movies like wildfire while taking cues from new genres of horror such as the Creepypasta or online ARGs. The 2010s in horror analyzed our relationships to nostalgia, our ever-increasing distance from each other, our technology, our love, our bodies, & our societal problems in more intimate ways than ever before.

If you ask me, it's undeniably a great decade in horror. But it's not just up to me, that's up for our wonderful rankers to decide! Did these movies resonate and scare the way they were meant to? Or did they just collapse and fall with an underwhelming "thud" stock horror sound effect?

For now, lists will be due May 8, 2022. You can email lists to [email protected], or if you prefer, send me a link to a Letterboxd ranking with write-ups included. Make sure in your email title your username and 2010s Horror is included somewhere so I can find it easy. If you're interested in participating, let me know in this topic. I've tagged some people who either participated in the previous list or expressed interest.

I hope that's everything, now:

Tag. I love horror. I've already seen most of these too, so that'd be an easy watch.

I have to say, there does seem to be a bit of redundancy where this comes off more as a list of favorites rather than an exploration of the genre (and maybe that's the point!). It seems especially notable in the 2nd half of the decade's list here, where we see numerous directors who have only done two films in their career so far, and both of their movies are on the list, such as Ari Aster (Midsommar and Hereditary), Robert Eggers (The Lighthouse and The Witch), Jordan Peele (Get Out and Us). Plus having Don't Breathe, A Quiet Place, and Birdbox all there adds to that feeling. I suppose this allows for some direct comparisons in write-ups, but it was just something that immediately stood out to me.

Good list of stuff either way. Anyone on the fence about this should participate, because there are some real winners here.

I can see the concern here! It was a tough list to trim but I took into account many factors and I wouldn't have put films by the same director if I felt they didn't deserve to be here. If I really wanted to add favorites I would've put films by Aaron Moorhead & Justin Benson or The Love Witch. As for the "samey" feeling, Don't Breathe & A Quiet Place were two of the biggest box office smashes in horror this decade and both produced sequels, while Bird Box was the most watched film on Netflix ever until just last year. Of course I regret not having certain films on here but I was being real strict with cuts and specifically tried not having many comedy horror (which was a complaint of my 2000s list) in particular.

typically yes, of some sort, but there's not any type of length requirement or anything, so you can by all means say as much or as little as you want about each film

Upgrade definitely has a lot of similarity with the body horror genre. It's just one of those nebulous movies that were released a lot this decade, The Guest is another that comes to mind too. Just these terrific genre blends.
