I tell you, I would have played Dead Cells a lot sooner if someone had told me it was basically a more sophisticated Rogue Legacy (which is one of my favorite roguelites).

Sword Art Online and Sunday without God are finally being sent my way, so I'll see them this week. Next week my brother is back off to school, so I'll probably use some of that free time to watch some of the anime I've been buying.

I was planning to wait until Rogue Legacy 2 came to consoles. Who the heck knows when that will be though.

Started on Tales of Arise, about 5 hours in. It's definitely different and taking some getting used to, but I am liking it. Not watching any anime currently, just Bones which I'm on the 4th season of.

I beat the 5th major Boss, and came across what definitely feels like the 'halfway point scene' at least

That dungeon definitely ate up resources like candy. I think I used up half my Cure Points on the 1st floor alone.

looked up nothing about the game, was incredibly pleasantly surprised when Dohalim became a party member. his singular arc was among the best bits of storytelling tales has ever done imo. against his upbringing and outside of his own cognizance, he turned out to be a genuinely good person. i was waiting the entire time for him to backstab us or get killed off

Ever since I found Retro Crush, a free streaming service for older series, I've been (re)watching GTO and some other stuff like Project A-ko and Robot Carnival. It's also nice that it has its own broadcasting schedule that auto plays as you browse; if you're ever hit with indecision or if what's already on catches your eye, you can just leave it on that.

wow, a LOT of vtubers have been streaming Needy Streamer Overload. in the past two days so far, i've seen ina, kiara, and calli play. apparently the translation is insanely good too, and they even got one of their songs into Muse Dash

there's pay to win dlc that makes CP a lot more manageable (like very early access to titles that regen CP after battles) that pirates get for free

general consensus i've seen is that any difficulty higher than normal becomes a slog without at least some dlc, not necessarily out of difficulty but out of number tuning

This is completely false and the DLC titles make only a very minimal difference. It's still super fucking lame that the DLC titles have bonuses you can't get without them but the game feels like it was designed around not having DLC.

CP is only an issue in the section between early and mid game where the dungeons start lengthening but you can't yet buy orange gels. As soon as you can buy orange gels, CP is never an issue again.

In the very worst case, where you make it like 80% of the way through a mid game dungeon and run out of CP, you can warp out, and then just avoid all the battles till you get back to where you were. It's very easy to avoid 95% of the fights. You shouldn't even need to do that but if you mismanage everything poorly, that's the only punishment.

EDIT: for clarification I played through once on hard and once on mania or whatever the hardest option was that they patched in and I didn't have the DLC.

I finished the entirety of FLCL, and I'll say

Original > Alternative > Progressive

The original was and still is great. Very stylish and humorous with a nice story to wrap it up. Very solid.

Alternative had a nice vibe to it, and was also pretty humorous. But I feel the last episode fell off somewhere.

Progressive was ok on the initial watch, and eh on the 2nd. It tries to be pretty similar to the original, but fails to establish a base and goes all over the place. Worth a watch since it's short, but eh.

I also reached Episode 20(?) Of NGE, and so far it's been excellent

I haven't watched Alternative just yet, but I saw an analysis of Progressive that suggested it intentionally had a meta message of not chasing after something you can't have (meta because it was a sequel to something it was very unlikely to live up to).

Damn man, this demon slayer fight is up with the best shonen fights. The first half of this season was meh but once they got to fighting, it's been great. Although they DO seem to push past their limits a little too easily. Some of these people like 4 episodes ago were "out of strength and unable to move" and they just keep going.

I said it before: I always figured Kill La Kill was the "real" sequel to FLCL.

Currently getting back into King of Fighters XIV in preparation for the next game, due to release on February 17. Still one of my favorite series in its genre, no matter how silly it gets.

Genius prince is definitely the show I'm enjoying more than I expected. Well and demon slayer I guess. It's just political and military schemes with a bit of light heartedness. It almost reminds of irresponsible captain tylor in tone.

maintenance has been extended indefinitely according to midoriya screaming at me that there's still maintenance, but the end time has vanished

Just finished Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai from my physical anime backlog. It was alright, but wish it was a bit longer. Couple of the characters deserved more story.

Yeah, the third game supposedly "ties into the future" of the first two games.

How it'll do that I don't know seeing as how the two games were set in two different universes.

I have over 80 hours on my og Wii Xeno save file, but I got de for Switch, so I need to start that. Never did beat it, but was pretty far.

So I played 50 minutes (which was only a bunch of story exposition and 1 battle) and I wasn't hooked yet.
The combat depth and customization of FFT doesn't seem to be present, and there wasn't any kind of immediate plot hook in that play session. There's this seemingly big build up after the optional scene after the first battle, that may be alluding to a Game of Thrones-esque death scene, but I'm not sure if the game will move in that direction (I honestly doubt it).

Seems like it is trying to copy FFT, but doesn't really understand why FFT is so good.
Also a note on deaths, I had two of the units die in the first battle (because I didn't care to position them) and there's no punishment for death? Very weird.

Xeno 3 looks nice and futuristic, but these type of games are too big for me to buy day 1.

I'll have to wait until the game is figured out so there's no complete aimless wandering

Also MK8 DLC is nice, especially since I finally bought MK8 a week ago.

The aimless wandering (aka exploring) is the best part. As long as there's no teddy bomber tier side quest but someone will make a guide just for those type of things.

why would there be punishment for that

it was started with fire emblem, but even fire emblem stopped because it's stupid and pointlessly frustrating.

So I guess you haven't played FFT helly?

I personally prefer when you can afford to have units fall in battle in tactics games. It opens up a lot of strategy and options for level design that you just can't do if the player needs to be able to win without losing a unit.

Haven't played Tales of Arise in like a week, just don't feel like playing it. Besides the cure points being a mild annoyance, I don't really find anything particularly wrong with the game, just don't feel like it right now. Thinking of playing Xenoblade DE. I really hope that DE has the Japanese voices as an option, as I found the English vas somewhat grating when I played on Wii. Would be nice to actually finish the game this time around too.

Demon slayer season ended. Battle was hype, story was meh but not awful.

I've played some of the triangle strategy demo and I like it a lot so far. I've only done the first battle which was surprisingly pretty tough on hard. I ended up losing all but the main guy and the butler guy and essentially had to just distract and stall with the prince. If they didn't give you hp pots to start, I for sure would have lost. Of course, I could have played the battle better, but after srw 30, it's nice to actually feel like I need to think during battle.

I enjoy the pursuit attack mechanic where an ally will do a free attack (that is pretty weak) if they are on the other side of the target. It's quite simple really but it breaks up the normal formations you'd use in one of these games. Particularly having a wedge shaped formation is very risky if your front guy isn't a beast cause he will get pursuit attacked by the guys that end up next to him. I think on harder fights it's going to be a mix of wall formations (everyone side by side) mixed a reverse wedge (so enemies get trapped in the middle) and then needing to calculate well when to break formation and start back attacking people. As it is, if you do that too soon, you open yourself up to being surrounded and pursuit and back attacked. That's basically what happened in the battle I did and why it went so poorly, but I wanted to rescue the prince.

I think the control scheme in battle is pretty great. I know it's a small thing but part of what makes fire emblem good is how quick you can take a units turn. It starts on the move option already selected and transitions straight to attack option when you are in range after movements. This game works the same way but even one less option because they made take no action a separate button. That means you need minimal button presses per action and the pace of battles feels good.

The story setup is better than I expected. It's doing the romance of the three kingdoms strategy where it brings everyone together in a way they can show off combat prowess as allies (the yellow turban rebellion and battle of hu lao gate) before having them return home and become enemies you eventually fight. Here it takes the place of a tournament but it accomplishes the same narrative goal.

The characters have also been more interesting than I expected. I was thinking it'd be really anime shallow characters but dragan getting drunk and rambling and roland and his brother were handled pretty well. The half siblings are pretty shallow anime villain level but it's fine.

There is a lot more story than I expected. I assume it's mostly in the set up but theres a lot of scenes and so far only 1 battle. No idea if there will be any grinding chances with random battles in the full game but I hope so.

Wow, as a follow up, I did the 2nd battle and that was super hard. IMO that level was harder than some entire games. In order to win I had to make smart sacrifices and inentionally leave a hole in my defense that exharme would run into so I could surround and "burst" him over the course of like 3 turns making use of Anna double attacks to trigger 2 pursuits from roland who the boss is weak against. This of course killed both Anna and Roland and left my defenses open but I AoE nuked people with the mage and then ran in all directions sacrificing most of my units in order to 2v1 people with serena and butler guy. I did eventually win on my second attempt but it was by the skin of my teeth. Definitely going to get the game when it comes out.
