Some people dont actually have an identity or personality. So when you say something like slavery as perpetrated by white people in the US was wrong, the instinctual reaction is that for some reason means they are a bad and racist individual person.

Poor whites, they've had it the toughest the whole time! It's not their fault!

Please provide a concrete example of this. Keep in mind, this doesnt change any words. It actually contains no parameters other than white people should not experience discomfort when discussing difficult issues such as race.

Yeah since everybody knows hating people for the color of their skin isn't as bad as being against a vaccine.

For most people that learn about the horrors of slavery and institutional racism, their thoughts turn to how horrible it was, or what they could do to make it right, or even what they could do to ensure it never happens again.

Then there are the individuals who learn of the horrors of slavery and institutional racism, and their thoughts are about how they personally aren't racist, that they are being personally attacked, and it's obviously those people who are the racists against them!

If you are learning of the horrors of slavery and institutional racism, and your first thought are "But I'm not racist," you just might be.

Not trying to be argumentative but I got two issues here:

1) It's not a secret that white people were the slavers in US history, so why is the qualifier necessary? What does it contribute, does highlighting it serve any purpose? It's not context if it doesnt clarify anything, taking out "white people" doesnt remove any context because theyre the only ones!

2) "White people" is a wide blanket term, which is where a lot of the pushback comes from. You roll your eyes if somebody says "white people freed the slaves," right? That's the same wide blanket. The rich and powerful propagated slavery in the US, and to boil that down to the racial profile of "white people" does a disservice to everyone.

I still stand by it, "US slavery was bad" does not require racial context; all that does is inflame race relations by blanketing the blame.

If it's not a secret, why do you care if it's being used as a qualifier? Why omit it? other than subervsion?

It's a actual fact and saying disingenuous statements like "groups of people conducted slavery in the US" is how history is slowly corrupted to make it seem like slavery wasn't that bad.

Except that's also factually incorrect, EVERYONE fought to end slavery, it wasn't just white people.

Sure, it was abolished by Lincoln and we all specifically mention it as such, but to say that only white people ended slavery is watering down US history.
