It makes sense that a part of the requirements to be considered a planet is to have cleared your orbit around the sun of other objects.

Pluto shares its orbit with hundreds/thousands of other objects.

Not sure what this has to do with astrology.

This is just a small group of scientists in a university, trying to make something out of nothing, and pushing their biased beliefs.

if pluto were made a planet, then they would have to reevaluate all of the other dwarf planets like sedna and shit. then we would have like 100 planets in the solar system. it's easier to call pluto a dwarf planet lol.

That's gonna make for a *lot* of new Sailor Scouts.

The decision to redefine 'planet' wasn't widely supported in the IAU, and it has caused a few rifts in the astronomical community. The issue wasn't with Pluto, it was with Eris and co. And the definitions proposed had to be changed several times after some embarrassing blunders, which led me to wonder the decision was more about wanting a preferred outcome than it was about scientific clarity.

I never saw the point in redefining what was always a fairly nebulous term. Subclassification always seemed an easier way of dealing with the issue, and we already do so informally anyway.

Now, we have astronomers using the term 'worlds' just to get away from the shitfight over 'planets'.

Some of those issues (...but there will be too many planets!) are ridiculous reasons to make that change anyway.

That said, connecting the term 'astrology' to the decision seems a pretty far stretch.

It's a good way to try to make the people opposed to categorizing it as a planet look bad. So yeah, it's a shitty move.

pluto thought it finally made it when it passed the planetary exam and it got its certificate of planeticity. little did it know how far its enemies would go to ruin it...

i thought about this too. i mean, technically, there are tons of things around us that could be considered planets. we just chose the biggest ones to care about.

personally, i find it kinda silly that mars and jupiter are both in the same category, too.
