My gf and I are going to a bed and breakfast there on Wednesday and Thursday night. Any recommendations? All we have planeed for sure is going to a fancy Italian restaurant, two brewery stops (Bent Paddle, Castle Danger), and hiking to frozen watefalls near Two Harbors.

Anything else?

I used to go skiing up there as a kid every once and a while.

They have some fun quick slopes, unless you are real enthusiasts... than it might be a bit boring.

*edit, Lutsen was the place. Ive been to the waterfront in winter before as well. Its neat, but you might not want to hang around too long depending on the weather.

If it were nicer Id suggest the waterfront, which is very scenic, has tons of cool little shops and sights.

The Glensheen Estate is very beautiful and has some cool tours.

Lutsen is a ski resort an hour or so away if you're into that. There's also some trails nearby.

Grandmas is a nice local restaurant on the waterfront, but isnt Italian so Iunno

Oh, we suck. Lutsen is a possibility, but probably stick to hiking for outdoor stuff.

I didn't even realize that was there. Cool. I only knew of Hibbing.

Cuz it's a cool little city. We live in the Twin Cities so a couple hour drive. And our Caribbean cruise was canceled and wanted to do something.

Oh, yeah, we are staying in Canal Park. I have heard good things about Grandmas. We have another dinner we need to plan. Va Bene is the Italian place.

Never heard of the estate, will check it out.

Haha, nice!!

I had a stint at a German-based restaurant, I was about the only one who could pronounce any of the beers properly.

I know it's not German, but for this time of year, I would lean towards, Chimay.

I simply like saying Gewrztraminer. I had a Rhine river cruise with family a few years back and had some awesome Rieslings and Gewrztraminers in Alsace.

Yesss! That sounds amazing! Certainly Jelly of that one.
Pretty much any Alsatian Wine is going to be great.

As for a fun wine to say, I would introduce you to, Hermann J. Wiemer - Gewrztraminer.
John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt, better lookout!

Lol.

@SiO4 And you want me to make you more jelly? On the wine tour in Alsace, the owner let us try two Dry Rieslings that were the exact same vintage but grown 50 meters apart, as one was in sandstone and one was in limestone. Tasted utterly different simply due to the terroir. It was pretty eye opening.

Oh that's awesome. And yes that can make a difference.
Those are two very different soils. The sandstone, for starters I would assume have a higher acid level.
Maybe not in the wine, but certainly in the soil. Limestone will help neutralize that.
Terroir should be my specialty as I come from a Geology background...hench the user name.

New York can pull off a decent Riesling and Gewrztraminer, because of our soil, but also our...basically shitty weather. Also, Pinot Noir believe it or not. Same reason we can do Apples and Maple Syrup.

The story of Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is kinda cool. Basically Dr. Frank came to America to prove that we can pull off noble grapes. We actually have a Rkatsiteli.

But yes, I am jelly of a trip to the Alsace region.

One was definitely more acidic, but can't remember the details.

I have heard that New York has some good wines (and specifically cooler weather ones like you listed), but never had one. They don't seem to be distributed much. I am sure they are better than the mostly shitty MN & WI wines along the St Croix/Mississippi river valley.

Haha, Ya tasting notes! Sometimes it's best to write them down.
Reisling is not a boring grape though, it can do a lot.
9/10 I'll take it over a Chardonnay.
If you are feeling it check out the story with Dr. Frank.
He probably kicked off real American wine-making.

....But there is a winery that is...basically too far north, that is using a Grape that was first cultivated in Minnesota. That's all I know about it. I will post what it is when I get a chance. There is pics somewhere in my phone.
