Lol I like these movies and kinda agree.

Considering the scale of how much better some of their sequels are.. Are we going to see 18/10 for some of the later movies?

Captain America was really impressive with skinny Steve. Totally forgot Howard Stark and Bucky were in that movie.

What's up with Howard Stark not being played by Dominic Cooper in Iron Man 1?

Alright, so

I was talking mad shit about Captain America and realized that I've become a very different person since I watched it back in the day. Decided to give it a second chance. Now I'm watching all of Phase 1. Can't promise I'll give Phase 2 the same treatment tho.

"Just paint them solid blue/yellow/pink, etc" works so well for a superhero film that is otherwise not really a superhero film. It's so true to the comic books too. How do you know they're an alien? Well, they have bright green skin and they're in space! Otherwise perfectly hot chick. Lol Love it

The concept fosters knee-jerk posting and discussion, also meaning admitting that nothing is perfect. You can enjoy something while accepting criticisms. There's also the potential for humor. "9/10... One problem? It sucked!!" lol

Currently watching Civil War

This seems to follow the story of Captain America: The Winter Soldier a little more directly than Thor 2, Iron Man 2 & 3, or even Avengers 2 did their predecessors.

I think it marks the first time a set of villains have returned in such a direct way. First is Bucky, who is just as brainwashed as he was when we met him. Next is Kurlow or whatever the burnt guy's name from the beginning of the movie is. (He won't be coming back again lol)

The closest they got to bringing a villain back outside of this was Loki in Dark World, but he's mostly playing a changed man in that one, and his character in Avengers was a little different than from where we saw him in the first Thor, as he was an emissary of Thanos and we never returned to the Frost Giant plot. You need to watch Avengers to truly understand what's happening in Dark World with Loki's character. This bounces off Winter Soldier rather cleanly by comparison.

That, plus the factoid that this is a glorified Avengers film (bringing everybody back from Age of Ultron, and introducing Ant-Man into the mix, while setting things up for Spiderman and Black Panther).... is pretty cool. On top of that, we get General Thunderbolt Ross back (while the Hulk is missing.... Interesting direction) ~ and an acknowledgement of the devistation the Avengers kinda wreak on the planet. All in all, a cool way to bounce out of Ant-Man & Guardians of the Galaxy, thematically.

Also leads into Ragnarok very well. We get to learn just exactly where Thor & Hulk were lol

The corruption plot of Winter Soldier transitions really well into the control plot of Civil War

*Edit: bringing back the villains from Winter Soldier is actually fascinating because the main struggle involves infighting

Old age make-up

I'm thinking they did this partially as a means to intentionally splinter the casting just in case they needed to recast a role later, honestly

Doctor Strange
  • 9/10: So counting Dormammu & other dimensional evils, how many multiversal threats exist? I consider the guys from totally different movie franchises in Spiderman NWH to be on their own level. Then, there's the possibility of people coming in from alternate timelines within the MCU (like Kang in Loki & Thanos in Endgame) ~ After that, the Infinity Stones themselves transcend space & time. The Celestials may or may not do the same (especially if they decide to make Galactus more attached to their story than he is in the comics). The Watchers are also outside of regular reality. The TVA presumably exists still in some capacity. Female Loki is doing who knows what at the end of all time. Then, there's the quantum realm which Ant-Man used to save the world from Thanos's snap. That's potentially super dangerous. Most recently, in NWH, Doctor Strange demonstrated how dangerous his regular magic can be even without the Eye. If they work in Blade & officially bring in more occult elements like Ghost Rider, we may have heaven & hell stuff on top of the Asgardian & Olympian lore as it is in the comics. This is starting to get complicated!!!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  • 9/10: Holy cameos! The Watchers, Stan Lee, Howard the Duck, Sylvester Stallone, Ving Rames, & Michelle Yeoh (as Ravagers), teasing Adam Warlock. Wow.

Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • 9/10: Spidey under water, on the outside of a flying plane, under rubble, running in the suburbs, climbing the Washington Monument, etc. With him being so young in this, and vs Michael freaking Keaton, they really nailed the sense of fear. Huge props for a better take on the Vulture character and building the film around the twist. Great, strange logic fitting the superhero genre.

The dialogue is amazing. Namely, their armchair psychology about the loss of Thor's hammer being comparable to the loss of a loved one. The Valkyrie's reasoning for returning to Asgard. Loki visiting Thor in the cell and discussing how he plans to overthrow the Grandmaster, etc

Hulk/Banner had some great lines as well. In general, Mark Ruffalo is a great actor. I believe his face.

Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • 9/10: big, big budget film held back by its sitcom gags and some needless green screen stuff towards the end. Definitely flies under the radar on many top 10 lists. If this is any sort of preview for Quantumania however, I can't complain. Here's to hoping they hit their mark a little better next time! More Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves less The Dark Knight pls

Captain Marvel
  • 9/10: amazing stab at the concept of playing up a female superhero without making her super eye-candy. They seem to have done this while also making someone stronger than Superman who isn't a wizard, which is actually really impressive. Introduces some really contentious material with the depiction of the Kree, having space gates above Earth, and bringing Ronin's fleet to Earth. Definitely the right movie to pull that with. Larson, Lawson... Mar-Vel, Marvel? Weird.

No. They used archived footage from some other appearance. He comments on how (a child)'s? punch was "great" in an encouraging mentory manner, presumably after being punched (in the face?) by said child. This is hilarious because that's the sort of thing which would trigger Bruce (/David) into turning green! XD

It's right at the beginning of the movie.

Lou appears as a security guard! He is highly susceptible to pizza bribes, apparently. Also, the teacher in charge of the trivia club from Homecoming is there. Likewise... He takes pizza as a bribe. I enjoy this movie. It's a little more down to earth. That translates to a powerful presence for General Ross in Civil War. Looking back on it, the Black Widow - Hulk romance subplot was a little strange. She seems to hit it off with married men a lot tho. Tony. Clint. Etc(?)

Fun fact: it was imagined as a soft sequel to Ang Lee's HULK, as touched on in another thread
...

Well, according to IMDB anyway

*Edit: I think the Bill Bixby bit ties into the theme of Bruce learning to control the Hulk here

Endgame
  • 9/10: Tony dies. Cap gets old. Thor turns into a fat drunk & joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. Bruce Banner goes Hulk permanently. Black Widow dies too. Ant-Man sort of saved everyone. Just looking back on everything from Phase 1 & Phase 2... This is such a colossal film.

i know technically Far From Home is the end of Phase 3. This was it tho.

My current ranking, based purely on chemistry and my enjoyment:

Infinity War: Thanos became a living meme from this movie.
Civil War: seeing heroes fight other heroes is always fun.
Endgame: super powerful movie exploring the entire MCU.
Iron Man: a classic. The one that started it all. Still holds up.
The Avengers: basically a groundbreaking entry in history.
Guardians of the Galaxy: reinvented otherwise passable characters.
No Way Home: a revival comparable to the scope of an Avengers movie.
Ragnarok: big gearshift for Thor and follows the Guardians example nicely.
Doctor Strange: doesn't struggle at all to turn Strange into a real presence.
Black Panther: pretty much an unforgettable experience.
Loki: quietly changed the face of the MCU and gave us the Hiddelson we deserve.
Captain Marvel: marvelous stab at a superheroine film on par with Iron Man.
Ant-Man: those special effects are absolutely insane. Nuff said.
The Incredible Hulk: lite sequel to Ang Lee's Hulk with more Bixby spirit.
The Eternals: more like a graphic novel than most of the other MCU material.
The Winter Soldier: more like a spy vs spy espionage thriller than the rest of the MCU.
Captain America: skinny Steve! I love the way this was filmed and the set design.
Far From Home: who said you can't teach an old dog a new trick!
Homecoming: who said you can't teach a new dog and old trick! ;)
Guardians of the Galaxy 2: actually an amazing movie. Little too fat in places and a little too skinny in others.
The Dark World: actually also enjoy this one a lot. Pretty standard.
Black Widow: after one or two viewings, I'm not sure there's replayability.
Age of Ultron: see: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Thor: see: Black Widow
Iron Man 3: one gag too many. Not bad. Not great.
Iron Man 2: see: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Ant-Man and the Wasp: see: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Shang-Chi: see: Black Widow
WandaVision: see: Black Widow
Falcon & Winter Soldier: see: Black Widow, Iron Man 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2
