The way the story is formatted in the game is kind of annoying (Ultimax fixed that, thankfully), but it's got some cool ideas and good comedic moments.

If you only play Yosuke, Naoto, Aigis, Labrys, and Elizabeth, in that order, it's a really strong story. Labrys legitimately has a very strong narrative and it ends up giving a bunch of characters strong resolutions after their initial stories.

... and the characters that they have no idea what to do with stand out like sore thumbs and range from inoffensive to some absolutely dreadful bits of boiling down characters to their base traits and nothing more. I don't feel that it entirely mars the good experience, as what works REALLY works, and the required emotional beats end up stronger than Ultimax and stack up well against most Persona spin-offs in general (want to emphasize Labrys is great), but God help you if you picked a story path of Chie/Teddie/Akihiko or something.

Can agree with this. Unfortunately the game just isn't formatted that way - Chie, Yukiko, Kanji, and Akihiko are all very questionable, and Yu is just boring.

it's no coincidence that all four of those characters have joke endings to pad out their routes

(I am pro Narukami though)

also Yosuke is essentially the main character in the manga

from a completionists perspective, playing all of the characters' story modes was a kind of miserable experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

as far as fighting game spinoffs go it's not terrible. yes, it's a contrived sequel but the characters are for the most part accurate to the source material. labrys is a mixed bag. I think Ultimax is significantly better.

I'm amazed people here remember individual routes. Basically all I remember is the Labrys stuff being good and some other stuff being not so good.

I remember which ones mattered and which ones didn't.

I guess 7/10 overall.

Labrys's route was actually really great, and I tend to form overall opinions on things based on how good the good parts are. The rest was pretty mediocre though for the most part. I remember Mitsuru and maybe Naoto having decent stuff I guess.

Only played P4G, and I totally see what you're saying. I could've done without the bonus ending content, although the ski trip was worthwhile

P4G is great, Ultimax is also great
