They've done WW2, modern warfare, futuristic warfare and slightly futuristic but still modern warfare (advanced warfare, 2042 eg.).

So what settings are they left to play around with??

Now Activision's strategy seem to be just about rebooting the settings ALL OVER AGAIN.

We're gonna have YET another stupid Modern Warfare 2 after Vanguard (which had abysmal sales btw) and I suspect yet another futuristic game that's basically Black Ops2 reskinned or something

The people playing CoD don't want creativity. They could just remake MW2 every year and people would still buy it.

Activision might as well just rely on CoD warzone in this case then, just like what Epic does for Fortnite. It's a constant stream of revenue and all they ever need to do is produce the occasional lootboxes and P2P items, sit back and make a s*** load of cash

Activision also doesn't need to release a CoD every single damn year (even BF series doesnt do that) but they're clearly doing it to make quick bucks. This at the expense of innovation and effort put into their games

Same could be said about most sports games. They both have a lot in common. Both were better set during WW2 for one.

They want Warzone to bring people into the franchise, and then they want those players to buy the mainline games as an easier way to unlock and level up guns for Warzone. The focus being on Warzone is the biggest reason why the last three mainline CoD games have been between mediocre and just plain fucking awful, and the rushed development because they refuse to go a year without a new CoD game is the second-biggest reason. This year, it's finally biting them in the ass like never before, because Warzone and all three recent mainline CoD games are all in varying states of fucked up, and the player base is just pissed off all around.

The only positive developments in CoD's standard multiplayer over the past three years are all of the post-launch content (maps and base weapons) being free for everyone and the removal of supply drops in favor of a storefront where you know what cosmetic items you're getting for your money. But being more player-friendly with the monetization is pointless if the games themselves are buggy dumpster fires.

it was coming.. until warzone. MW19 briefly revived it. But warzone shot them to the moon. Then Cold War and vanguard buried it. The competitive scene is on its last legs

Alternate Universe is about the only place they can go.

More popular crossovers and skins will keep Warzone afloat for at least another decade

No, it keeps selling and maintains a high online population. They can keep milking it as long as people are playing it.

New players every gen, they don't need to innovate, just turnover their userbase. And whenever the graphics and console gen change everyone needs new versions too.

As long as it's the highest selling game every single year (unless a Rockstar game comes out) it has a long, long way to go before it kills itself.

Warzone put CoD on life support when it came out and will most likely keep the franchise alive for years to come. Their mainstream releases, like Vanguard, don't mean anything. Those are just bets on top of their winnings.

It's Battlefield that is in danger of collapsing. Not CoD.

I have up on cod after infinite warfare and just got back into it with cold war and I gotta say I love it, reminds me off black ops2.

Activision has now resorted to just making history up at this point with vanguard so it's only downward from here.
