I just found out about this game. It's an RPG made by ex-Square guys. Half an hour in, and it feels like a PS1-era Final Fantasy game.

Also, Apple Arcade has a one-month free trial, so you can check it out for free and then dump it without paying a cent.

transience had it on his recent top games list and it looked really neat. i'll probably try it out at some point.

Subscription service and all games are promised to have no microtransactions, even the ones that are rereleases of pre-existing MT-heavy titles like Angry Birds.

absolutely hated it. can't stand touch screen movement and the game lacks any sort of charm or spark. the nier-esque cutscenes were kind of interesting. the music is among uematsu's most derivative.

I'm curious about it, but hesitant to subscribe to a service like that for one game.

Fantasian is fantastic. it's like a lost FF game from the classic era.

warning though, it gets reeeeeally hard in the second half.

Just fought the forest boss. So far it seems pretty "standard" JRPG fare, which doesn't really hold it in the days when Nier and Persona are dominating the landscape. Not to mention, a controller is a lot more comfortable to hold for extended sessions than a phone is. I'm mostly just playing it out of curiosity for being an in-depth RPG on a mobile device that isn't riddled with microtransactions.

The store page said the first part was more story-focused. Is the second part more of a "bonus" chapter?

You can sync a controller to the phone and use that. It's how I plan to play it (while casting to my TV) if I ever get around to it.

you can think of it like FF6. part 1 is the world of balance, narratively, and part 2 is the world of ruin where it's more open.
