Board 8 > Save My Waifu II *RESULTS!* [smw] [smwii]

We started this contest with one hundred girls, all vying to earn the second-ever title of Board 8's number 1 waifu. Last contest's top five proved not to be flukes as they all made the top ten again, but four of the five dropped out shy of the finals. Meanwhile, some waifus who went deep last year suddenly found their support dried up this year, and some who'd flopped last year and made it just barely into the soft boots, came back with a vengeance.

At the end of the day though, the final came down to a trio that would have felt right at home at the top of the leaderboards in the classic GameFAQS contests. Samus Aran barely made a splash in contest, despite her Noble Nine status. Yet her bottom-feeding kept her going throughout the late rounds. Meanwhile, Tifa and Aerith represented Final Fantasy VII, and looked to face each other in the ultimate showdown of FFVII waifus. At the end of the final round, Tifa Lockhart finished strong, only for Samus to swoop in and finish that 2006 female contest goodness. Last year saw kickass fighter Makoto Niijima take on the bearer of Wisdom herself, Princess Zelda. This time, we saw two different brands of physical powerhouses and badass women facing off.

Last year's final was a close event, but in a surprise upset, Makoto took home the win. This time around, there was definitely an upset, but the vote wound up in a complete blowout. Ultimate, by a score of 218 to 154 (both of which would've outscored Makoto's total last year), the winner of the first ever (rebooted) Save My Waifu Contest is...

Samus Aran!

After struggling and scraping by through most of the back half of the contest, she came back with tremendous fury to defeat SMWI's third-place finisher, Tifa Lockhart. Despite the blowout, there was a point around the halfway mark where Tifa took the lead for a few posts, but then Samus's supporters just cleaned house altogether. I would like to offer a big thanks to everyone who participated throughout this contest and allowed it to exist and reach its completion. Here's hoping for an even bigger and better contest next year!

Huh, never pegged Samus as waifu material before (...since I never played any Metroid game), but congrats!

Was this an upset? Tifa was one vote away from finishing 12th and actually needed three straight saves to survive Lara.

Tifa'd been blasting through the competition once Lara went out though, while Samus was constantly second or third-last saved.

first save my i fully participated in, definitely a fun experience (even if sanae absolutely flopped)
i've always been a bit ambivalent about samus but she's certainly a deserving winner and i was glad to support her in f3/finals, congrats to all her diehard supporters

I'm like Raka in that I never really considered Samus a waifu but also haven't played any Metroid games, or maybe it's an inherent bias towards waifus in supporting rather than main character roles. She fits the waifu A-E-S-T-H-E-T-I-C but is the waifu personality there? I'll probably play some Metroid games... some day...

Nah I was there with you, I always begin with a default assumption of "NintendoFAQs" and "FF7 never wins" so I had both bases covered here, lol. Making the finals is always a great achievement.

But even then I'm surprised it wasn't at least closer, especially since Zelda lost last year to a far lesser-known RPG heroine. Samus is that much more popular I guess, or just the year-over-year change in participants/savers?

In any case: thanks again for running this Inviso! My plan to only pop late into Save Mys worked out all right in this case (not at all for the Smash contest), though lots of quality waifus were still standing in case Tifa was bounced early. Well, maybe 3rd time's the charm next year...

Really good ending. I missed nominations this year, and didn't participate for most of the contest because of all the children that were still in that people were voting for. But this finals was about as perfect as it could have been. Samus is an excellent winner.
