Never had one, but i am indeed claustrophobic and hope i don't have to get one. I'd probably hyperventilate like i've been buried alive.

There's nothing to it. It can take between 10 minutes and an hour depending on what they're looking for. So it might be a little tedious.

Not as bad as I was expecting (guy who gave them to me had said they were terrible).
Why would someone say that to you?

You pretend they aren't mapping your brain for some weird purpose and maybe play a game with your eyeballs for like 10-15 minutes, since that's really the only thing you can do

This is the main concern, but basically, it's really not that bad, you're just sitting in a somewhat cold, windy machine and it's boring and noisy. By the time it's over, you'll be like "oh ok, thanks I was getting tired of that"

Yes.

Depends on how claustrophobic you are.

I don't have a problem with it, so I just closed my eyes as they loaded me in and I was fine. But I also know someone who has a bad case of it who started to panic when he got one.

The key is to remember not to try and get out (most likely panic sitting up and smashing your head into the top of it). If you get too bad they can pull you out (it has a quick release sort of thing where they can slid you out fast specifically if you start freaking out).

If you're super-bad you might be able to ask them for a sedative first, but most people can handle it by just sort of closing their eyes and thinking about other things. Basically try to meditate a bit and calm yourself.

The fear of the thing is basically worse than the thing itself.

Newer MRI units are more open than the old models, but they're incredibly expensive so many places haven't upgraded yet.

The old models made me feel like Worf's girlfriend K'Ehleyr when she was launched towards the Enterprise inside a Class 8 probe. They slid me into a tube and my nose was literally inches from the top.

The noisiness was what I wasn't expecting, although they gave me headphones and asked me what I wanted to listen to when I walked in. I wasn't expecting the question and randomly went with the Doobie Brothers, so listening to them is my main memory...with random loud beeps/etc in the background.

Mine took a bit more than half of an hour (looking at my arm) but I'm not claustrophobic so it was fine enough. I just tried to close my eyes and more or less meditate/fall asleep. I knew if I started moving I'd bump into the sides and start feeling a bit...constrained. They told me I was unusually still so they got an unusually good picture: I won the MRI. :)

Mine was hot moreso than cold though given how long it took, though: they said it heats up over time.

I've had two MRIs, one of my head and one of my neck, so they stuck me in head first both times. Now I know how a torpedo feels being loaded into a torpedo tube. There's not enough room to move AT ALL, and after about 5 or 10 minutes your nose will start to itch and you can't do anything about it.

I experienced the confined tunnel model a couple times about 17 years ago. The space itself didn't bother me, but the loud banging noises did. Even with the headphones they gave me, it was a lot. Considering I'd gone in at the behest of a neurologist trying to figure out my headache that wasn't going away, the banging didn't help any.

No, no, he might not be lying. This was my first, and if you close your eyes you get the sensation that youre swaying.

And at one point I was really calm, like beginning to doze off despite the sounds. And Im anxious of stuff that emits radiation. So if hes not I can definitely see him sleeping through it.
