You can be as broad or specific as you want. It can be on or about anything. One per post until I do yours. This probably won't be a rapid fire topic and quality may vary. I may skip around a bit too if I feel like it.

Just looking to start writing again and I'd like to get kickstarted back into it.

The game Omori

Omori is a wonderful game that continues the fantastic new trend of indie psychological horror in the same vein as Doki Doki Literature Club, Inside, Inscryption, Fran Bow, Mad Father, or Ib. On paper, some of these games seemingly share very little qualities or even art styles, but what I think binds them is there attempts at utilizing horror not in a traditional sense but in ways that feel authentic to the human condition and also hugely relevant to the mental state of youths around the world. Omori is no different, exploring anxiety and depression through the lens of dreams, trauma, and colorful lies & illusions. Omori stars Sunny, a teen hikikomori (social shut-in) still reeling from the suicide of his sister Mari four years ago and the effects of that event on Sunny's friend group as well. Omori is full of clever gags and tricks, mixing and matching art styles from the whimsical to the grotesque, and you think it would make the game land less but no somehow everything feels even more heavy and present because of it, perfectly matching Sunny's emotional wellbeing at any giving point, personifying it a way any one person can relate to it easily, like the colorfully vibrant world of Headspace. In a way, Omori is a recontextualized Silent Hill both in the way it presents its worlds and how its story escalates and grows more horrific with each passing event as new details are revealed and unfolded. I see someone like Sunny as similar to James Sunderland, but where they differ is how they each choose to cope with their guilt and trauma while Sunny also has the added baggage of being a teenager which makes emotions even more volatile and ever-fluctuating.

Omori is scary because anyone can relate to it. Headspace is that colorful escapism we seek in our darkest moments, that laughter and joy we find or pretend to show just to try and feel happy again. The haunting monster, "Something", is all our fears, guilt, regrets, and flaws hanging over us every single day we look in the mirror or floating there regardless even if we look away. Sunny, Basil, and the rest of their friends are the people we push away or wish to get back but don't do enough. Even the game's combat system is our emotions battling for the spotlight, jostling each other around, wrecking our brain with a constant stream of thoughts that we can never quite get a grasp on. That Omori captures these elements so succinctly and so effortlessly is something to be applauded and lauded for years to come.

Rats

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_ijc7A5oAc

Rats are... a complicated animal to say the least. Widely considered pests by a majority of the world, their penchant and association with being the top spreader of pestilence and infestation makes it easy to see why. I wouldn't say I'm scared of rats; I've seen them in my apartment building staircase or in the garbage room and walk around them no problem, but I certainly wouldn't want to get up close and personal with one either. From a distance or isolated in a vacuum, I actually think rats can be adorable, just about as much as mice can really. Personally, I got no problem with rats overall. Yet, it's quite hard to shake that social stigma that surrounds them. The Black Death, the most deadly pandemic in our history, instantly makes you think of swarming rats over running the streets and invading homes. Now, that's far from the truth, but our perception of rats, like most things, is colored by our stories in fiction and culture. Dishonored, which depicts a Victorian Era fictional alternate history, takes inspiration from the bubonic plague and Black Death, using rats as a conduit for horror, a representation of personal choice, and as a common enemy that has no care for heroes or villains. The game clearly portrays rats as disgusting and something to be dreadfully avoided at all costs, while also using them to demonstrate the power imbalance between the upper and lower classes; as Corvo, you can gain the power to control and become the beasts, infiltrating the electric fences and large walls of the rich, and if as a player you choose to cause chaos and death around Dunwall, you see the effects first hand as rats appear in more and more areas and swarm people and bodies literally stripping them bare down to their very flesh and bones. It's one of the more up close sickening depictions of rats but highly effective in terms of demonstrating rats' danger and more symbolic meaning as well. Arguably more symbolic is the use of rats in Brian Jacques' Redwall series. The very first book in the series depicts Cluny the Scourge, a fearsome rat warlord with a poisoned-tip tail that commands a vast army of rodents. Without fail, rats are always depicted as villains in the series against the heroic mice, and they're not very flattering depictions either, as rats are portrayed as cruel, deceitful, and ultimately, cowardly. You can probably see where I'm going with that.

With all that being said, are there any heroic portrayals of rats? Yes, of course, one I would imagine most are familiar with, that's right, Marcell from Ratatoing.

Oh wait wait, no it's actually Remy from Ratatouille, easy mistake to make, apologies! It's a film that shows both sides, the rat as pest, and the rat as pet, and offers a more thoughtful portrayal of rats that shows off their intelligence and ability to work and learn simple tasks and behaviors. Another fantastic example is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH which depict rats in an advanced technological society and cleverly commentates on the ethics of animal testing whilst telling a compelling family drama in the process. The rat is also featured in the Chinese zodiac, and is not a bad thing at all as the rat zodiac is associated with intelligence and drive.

While it's easy to tell rats are still more associated with negativity, it's also important to remember they are animals and simply living beings too and do not mean to spread the harm or diseases they bring about. That sort of makes me root for the rat just a little bit more then most. Sure, caution is definitely advised with wild rats, but they can also make truly excellent companions for the right person too and I think both sides of the animal should be viewed and respected in equal measures.

Rats definitely need a better PR team, they are much more pro-social animals than mice or hamsters, which from a human perspective does make them seem a lot more sympathetic. You really shouldn't keep a single rat as a pet, it will become lonely and depressed unless it has another rat to live with. It's even possible to introduce rats to others from outside the same litter and eventually integrate them, which is a big contrast with Hamsters, which can never be kept in the same cage because they will brutally kill each other.

Cum

It's white or grey. It has sperm cells. It's a part of where we all originate from. It feels damn good to release. These are the bonafide facts. At its base level, cum is obviously hugely important in the reproduction of life, and far better than the other waste products we excrete from our bodies, but perhaps even more spectacular is its uses beyond that, as a pleasurable sexual activity that can relieve stress and provide relief that almost nothing else can. You can drink and swallow it if that's what you're into it or even enjoy a nice cream pie (am I allowed to say that on here, guess I'll find out). Hell, you can even be charitable and donate it to someone in need. Cum does have its risks, including potentially carrying many diseases and viruses, so leaving messes (and it does get messy) is inadvisable and safety should always be a factor when releasing it from your body if you're not looking to cause any harm or accidental pregnancies. That's about all I can think of to say!

an SCP that somehow hasn't been written yet

okay from my research I think I got an original one, hopefully!

SCP-60XX (Full Number Illegible)

Field Outing 1: The incident happened last night. A little girl in Jericho, New York woke up in tears yelling for her parents. She had this intense ringing in her ears. Dr. Campbell figured it was just a case of tinnitus but strangely the girl's parents developed the same ringing shortly after. Dr. Campbell, myself, and a few guards investigated the house but found nothing out of the ordinary besides a constant ringing noise. We wore ear protection just in case. For now we have chalked it up to mass hysteria.

Field Outing 2: Since day 1, everyone who has entered that house has now developed tinnitus. The ringing is intense but thankfully I have already gotten used to it. We are sticking with the same team to avoid any further "hearing casualties". We must find the source of this quickly. Could it just be the house itself I wonder?

Field Outing 3: We may have spoken too soon. Our hearing has already considerably worsened. The tinnitus is constant and deafening at times. It is impossible to concentrate on isolating possible noises located in the house. I have recruited some Class-D individuals to aid with further investigation.

Field Outing 4: I am now almost completely deafened. My ears exhibit sharp stabbing pains so intense they bring me to constant tears. The same thing has happened to Dr. Campbell, the family, and the initial batch of guards. We are at wits end with this investigation. Class-D has shown no progress besides more affected individuals. At this point isolating and securing the house is our only option.

fINalll rEporT:i was swrong theY are inside me get them otu get them out get them otuGETHTMEOUTTTTTTT

Post-Incident Report: Dr. Robertson and Dr. Campbell have received full autopsies. The guards and family have been summarily disposed of. The Class-D personnel have also been executed. Upon examination of the doctors' bodies, we discovered microscopic organisms living in and feasting on their ear drums. We have hopefully collected and contained all organisms within a petri dish. With noise isolation we have discovered a singular organism makes a noise of around 140 decibels. This revelation unfortunately gave everyone involved with the autopsy and testing tinnitus; we have no choice now but to isolate ourselves and end the infection and spread here with ourselves. The organisms are placed in a sound proof room and extreme avoidance is advised when dealing with these specimens. The house they possibly originated from has also been sealed off as mentioned in Field Outing #4. Hopefully no more of these get out or infect anybody else.

cats

Cats fucking rule. I always liked cats, but I never realized how much until I got one of my own about 10 years ago at this point. He's Tux, he's a bi-color and I just couldn't imagine my life without him now. It's incredible how owning a cat changes your life in ways that are subtle, destructive, and of course absolutely joyous. Watching movies is a totally different vibe with a comfy, cozy cat laying next to you. My furniture is pretty messed up from constant claw scratching. The peeing OH GOD the peeing why does he pee so much everywhere. But I never feel mad at him. One look at his adorable face and it's like I'm totally under a spell. Owning a cat also make you go totally psycho about other cats. Cat collectibles, cat-themed mats, cat-themed salt and pepper shakers, cat stuffed animals that happen to look like yours, it really never ends. Like, cats have to be legitimately magic right? I think perhaps it's their close emotional relationship to humans; our brains are startlingly alike. I sometimes even feel like my cat understands my words and answers me back constantly. It made me reconsider the human - animal relationship in a totally new light. Cats are special animals, and to me hold a unique power in the animal kingdom more than any other, from house cats to the totally wild. Their piercing, magnetic eyes, magnificent roars, and awesome killing potential combine into this beast that's beautiful and almost inapproachable, on a whole other plane of existence. It's quite a shame what we do them as humans, makes me fucking sick actually. Respect and love cats, that is all I have to say!

anything horror related

At the start of 2022, a bug bit me: I was on a found-footage horror kick, a genre that's been as popular for decades now as much as it has been derided. It seems anyone with a camera could make their own found-footage film, and that's both the appeal and the genre's main point of downfall and criticism but I truly believe it has led to some of the most intense, scariest, and realistic horror projects since the genre's inception with films like Peeping Tom, The Connection, and later greatly expanded upon in Cannibal Holocaust. However, it was the explosion of The Blair Witch Project in 1999 that really created the genre as we know it today. Love it or hate it, it was one of the most influential horror films of all time and gave us masterpieces like Lake Mungo, the Creep series, & Noroi: The Curse. These films are made by their simplicity & their authenticity. Blair Witch was a solid attempt at crafting anxiety out of the mundane, but two decades removed from its release cracks in its "realism" show everywhere. There's no mystery in that film anymore. It feels too calculated, cold, professional. Lake Mungo on the other hand feels like a teen's genuine project made in the grief after his sister's death, made to cope and aid his family. A film like Savageland could genuinely feel like a true crime documentary if you just stumbled upon it on one day without knowing anything about it. Yes, these films are ultimately calculated out as well, but the genius and horror is found in how these film's express themselves through their devotion to realism. And that's where Be My Cat: A Film for Anne, perhaps the single most disturbing film I have ever seen, draws its greatest strength from.

The premise is simple: Adrian, an aspiring Romanian filmmaker, is desperately seeking the attention of his favorite actress: Anne Hathaway to star in his movie. To achieve this, he recruits three actresses (who all bear passing resemblance to Hathaway) to film a fake movie in hopes of courting Anne to Romania. This fake movie quickly devolves further into a depraved snuff film, all while Adrian claims he's "in character" to impress Anne with his directorial & acting skills. Adrian is portrayed by Adrian ofei, and Be My Cat was actually his first film and first acting job and he just absolutely blew me away with his performance. He's a pure natural, a true master at portraying a psychopath effortlessly blurring the lines between Adrian the filmmaker, Adrian the actor, and Adrian "the character" until there really isn't any lines left to blur. You spend every minute with Adrian, up close and personal with his perspective, his cruel attacks and derisions towards his actresses, his stone-cold manipulation as he lies straight to their faces. It's a film that shocked me so much I had to pause after certain scenes to catch my breath and remind myself that this indeed truly was, only a film. This may sound weird to say, but eventually you realize Adrian's snuff film isn't necessarily the scariest part: it's the fact that he's so far gone that up until the very end he believes Anne Hathaway will still do a film with him even after everything sadistic and uncaring action he has done. It's a fractured mental state you don't have to look for too hard in reality, from the stalkers of celebrities like Bjork and Taylor Swift, to others that weren't so lucky, such as Rebecca Schaeffer where such an incident sadly ended with her murder.

It's not a pleasant watch and it's not a fun time, but it is important and effective. It's uncomfortable films like Be My Cat that found-footage was invented for. It gives us a chance to invade the headspace of an average joe caught up in a bad situation or that of a person out to do no good and what it's like to witness that second hand whilst being powerless to stop it. It's a genre not going anywhere anytime soon, and if someone wants to nominate a part two to this, please do because there's a lot more I want to talk about!

By the way you can watch the film free on Youtube, but if you can, support Adrian (the real life actor!) because he's a genuinely cool guy and fantastic creative force and pretty much made this film all on his own:
