How did you like Encanto?

Just watched it on D+ and wanted to talk about it.

It had charming characters and great animation/direction, but the story was just decent aaaand a bit predictable, in a way. Additionally, the songs are just so-so IMO (though they work great in context of the scene), but maybe I'll come around once I listen to them again.

It's good. I love the songs besides the first exposition one. The characters and story are pretty good. It's very straightforward but I appreciate the smaller stakes and lack of traditional action, it's nice. Animation-wise it's a little flat outside of the musical numbers and some neat bits with the house. But I'm personally just bored by Disney's house animation style. I couldn't help but compare it to Luca's which felt a lot fresher.

Songs were good imo, especially love Surface Pressure and We Dont Talk about Bruno. Though I do feel like this is one where the songs are much weaker as a soundtrack without the animation that goes with them. Speaking of the animation was great.

Loved that it doesnt really have a villain and is just about the personal struggles of the family.

Also the living house was a cool character.

Huge Disney fan.

Encanto kind of flopped at getting me to care about the plot and main character. 2 of the songs were fantastic (We Dont Talk About Bruno and Pressure). I actually really really liked Dolores (Strongwoman) and wish the movie was about her personal conflict rather than Mirabel.

Very colorful and pretty funny, Id give it an 82% overall.

I loved it. Loved the character of Mirabel. Loved how they depicted familial conflict while still preserving the warmth these people feel for each other.
I also liked the music, despite not being as enamored of Lin-Manuel Miranda's compositions as many people. It is a worthy addition to the disney canon.

The movie isn't about the source of the Madrigal magic, it is about Mirabel and the relationship she has with her family.
I am just so so sick of the 'arbitrary journey' subplot that gets shoehorned into like 80% of modern animated movies, I am glad they resisted the urge here.

I love how they didnt use all the special powers in the end to overcome some big issue. So it didnt feel like one big setup for the final showdown. But I definitely wouldnt call it one of Disneys greats.

Except for the Surface Pressure song, that is.

It's part of the selection process for the Academy Awards. By the awarding night there are only five nominees before the winner is announced. But before the list of the five nominees there is a shortlist of potential songs that are considered to be the final nominees.

I'm also on Team Surface Pressure is best song, but you guys are correctly nailing the best two in the movie. That and WDTAB are the only two that live rent free in my head, but I like all the songs aside from The Family Madrigal (opening song). Lot of bops in this movie which is solid but just shy of exceptional. 8/10 loved it, but wasn't in love with it.

Oh also both songs are now on DisneyVevo in their entirety:

This is the pretty common theory I've seen floated around, particularly since shes on the front door.

But Abuela gets her own door...Which I am so annoyed now that we don't get to see inside. Would love for them to make some shorts or something that showcase everyone's rooms because we don't get to see most of them.

I feel like inside of Abuela's door will probably be a perfect recreation of the home they left behind.

I feel like The Family Madrigal does its job. It's good at giving all exposition while showing Maribel's struggle with being the only powerless one and how much she idolizes the powers her family has. Its definitely weaker as a song but it serves its purpose very well.

Yeah I though this was pretty obvious.

Mirabel and Abuela both have no apparent powers, both are the only ones who can 'command' the house, both are the only ones who know something is wrong before the powers start fading.

The reason Mirabel's ceremony fails is because she already has a gift - the gift of the candlebearer.

Her part in We Don't Talk About Bruno is incredibly smooth, yeah. Her and Camilo's parts are my favorite parts of the song, but I might be biased because the animation is incredibly slick during those portions as well.

I might lean Luisa. She does a great job emoting during her song and I think her voice is really strong after the first section.

Gonna go ahead and resurrect the thread to say that I saw Encanto twice and loved it.

I wonder if a little life experience helps in the appreciation of Surface Pressure? WDTAB is so catchy, and Surface Pressure has a strong solo performance and lots of range too.

Bizarre to learn that Maribel is supposed to be the youngest child. Isabela reminds me of a youngest, but she's supposed to be the eldest. Luisa is the middle child, which makes sense but she's at least appreciated for what she can do, unlike Maribel. I don't have any siblings, so I'm just going off of birth order stereotypes. Interested in knowing what people with siblings think of this.

Silenzio Bruno!

Well, according to interviews, Bruno's name was originally Oscar but there was potential legal problems with other Oscar Madrigals, so when the writers gave LMM a list of other potential names he immediately picked Bruno, so that we can have the 'we don't talk about Bruno, no no no' part.
