Final Fantasy 7 Remake did it for me. I'm surprised how much I ended up loving this game after hating 15.

Slipped right in my Top 10 games of all time.

I played so much of that game for a solid 6 months and I feel like I've barely scratched the surface on narrative arcs

Added bonus that the game is one of the funnier games I've played in recent memory.

I probably played way more of Valhalla than anything but Disco Elysium left a lasting impression on me.

Still barely comprehend the skill tree and equipment perks lol I basically just dressed the dude like an asshole the whole game because it amused me

I haven't played a lot of new games this year... Hades or Inscryption or Tales of Arise probably win by default as they're the only ones I can think of that I played that came out this year. This is in part due to me not typically buying games when they first come out.

From those 3, it's Hades.

When I first encountered the Insulindian Phasmid at the end of the game, there was a thunderstorm outside and my TV switched off for a few seconds.

Scared the shit out of me.

I think Nier Replicant was the only new game I played this year. It was alright, but also kind of sucked with all the running and extremely tedious side quests. I was excited to play the FF7 remake, but the audio is all kinds of fucked up on my AMD FX CPU.

FNAF Security Breach. Though it does have a lot of issues, its still an amazing game. And a gorgeous one. And most importantly, you can tell just how much the devs cared.

And a couple parts of it were just amazing. Its been years since I've had that much fun losing to a game.

Tales of Arise

I'm in the late game and just got through a four freaking hour session that was 99% scenes, skits, and other talking. That soured me on the game enough to probably drop a point off the score I'd give it, but I still think it's GotY in spite of that inexcusable pacing atrocity.

Hades was definitely my game of the year last year.

Like I said earlier the only games I would consider this year are in early access so I'm not sure they count. Of them I would probably give the nod to Valheim.

From the moment you arrive at Lenegis, there's a ton of scenes and skits, then a short dungeon and boss, then a bunch of screens of walk a bit and get hit w/ another scene and then 3 skits, walk a bit more, repeat. Plus a bunch of supplemental info to read. Then another boss and run all the way back out (fast travel disabled). Then another 2 hours of scenes and skits with like 10 seconds of walking around in between at times.

I'm now at Rena (additional space to make the spoiler less obvious), and hopefully the ordeal is finally over. I've never seen a game this bad w/ exposition dumping. Worst part is how repetitive a lot of it is and how often the characters end a skit with "well, the only way to know is to keep going" / "we need to hurry" / etc... then immediately there's another skit or scene. Incredible trolling by the developers.

More accurately, it was ~2 hours of cutscenes/skits/dialogue from when you find the ship to the dungeon in Lenegis, then afterwards ~2 hours of more dialogue when speaking to the dying alien thing and everyone on the satellite
