I mean, obviously I know I can but how important is the continuity here for appreciating the story? I know there is one important game between Super Metroid and Dread but I don't know if I'm spoiling anything really cool by just jumping into Dread or if there's just some minor plot details I might be missing out on.

Playing Dread before Fusion would spoil a plot twist near the end of Fusion, but if you don't think you'll ever go back and play it, you'll be fine. Not having played Fusion shouldn't ruin your Dread experience.

Plot isn't a particularly important factor in the games. Regardless, the beginning of Dread does a synopsis of the series so far, so you'll get what happened before Super, Super, and what happened in Fusion.

Having played Fusion back when it came out, I barely remembered the plot before starting Dread. But Dread recapped everything, so it doesn't matter. Fusion is a good game though, but Dread is much better, and you won't miss anything by skipping Fusion.

You'll understand a bit more if you've played Fusion, but the beginning recaps enough so you'll still have a general idea.

I think it will be harder to go back to older games after playing Dread. It controls so well.

Fusion is pretty important, but the recap is fine I suppose.

I've only played Super and I'm enjoying Dread so far. They do a good job of recapping all the important stuff, and I don't feel lost by anything that's happened.

Poor Other M, no recommendations despite it slotting between Super and Fusion in the timeline.

I was just thinking that, about how the whole fusion reveal kind of doesn't really have the full impact it should on its own imo unless you play other M and learn exactly who Adam was.

In any case, I don't think the narrative will have the desired effect if you've only ever played super, since Dread does kind of wrap up a whole lot of stuff, but if you just want sick gameplay then you're fine.

As someone who played Fusion and Dread, knowing the Fusion story doesn't matter at all.

There's even gameplay related stuff in Dread that throws back to Fusion in a really, really cool way. I think I recommend playing it first. It can be beaten in an afternoon or two. I don't think Fusion is anywhere near as good as Dread though.

You can also read the Metroid manga, which should still be available for free online! That will give you the same information that Other M would and is arguably a better experience.

Honestly Other M is in a weird place canon-wise, because it both retcons a few things and pseudo-retells Fusion despite immediately preceding it in the timeline.

Just play Fusion, it's pretty short while still being an excellent game, and it's probably not very recommendable to hop back to Fusion after Dread.

This is basically where my opinion is. I think it was really cool to see the series evolve from Fusion into Dread. Good and short game(Dread is better but I think more appreciable by playing Fusion first).

I played Fusion for the first time like a month before Dread came out and didn't regret it. It wasn't my favorite Metroid, but it was good. I think the general context is nice to have but not vital or anything.

Play all of them in release order. Why not? They're all at the top of the genre and aged well.
