Which Linux distribution are you using? Is the problem the speed? Is the problem the lack of copy-paste feature that Windows users are used to? Is the problem the lack of compatibility with games downloaded via the Steam platform? Or most likely of all: Does the problem lie with trying to successfully boot and run the OS? Or perhaps your issue lies with your inability to adjust the backlight of your monitor without restarting? Perhaps the distribution you are using currently has trouble entering sleep mode?

By and large, don't expect Linux to work for you out of the box. Using Linux generally entails putting effort into convincing it to work for you.

This is no longer true for all distros. Ubuntu honestly works as well as Windows out of the box for pretty much everything except gaming.

Wait, you can't copy-paste in Linux? I would expect keyboard shortcuts to be different, but not this.

Can the same be said for Linux Mint? I'm interested in that distro 'cause it's decent for Linux noobs and the desktop environment at least is similar to Windows.

Yea, pretty much any modern distro based off of Ubuntu is user friendly (Which Liunux Mint is).

Despite the fact that I have been using Linux for almost 20 years at this point, I still prefer to download some Ubuntu based distro for my own personal use. Sure, I could use something "cooler", but I just want something that does 90% of the stuff I want it to, then I can fool around with the other 10% when I feel like it.

Did a fresh install yesterday. Took me less than 20 minutes (including download) to get everything up and running again.

My apologies. The bit of my post you quoted was phrased exceptionally poorly; it is possible, at least on Mint, to copy-paste things. But you generally do not use the Ctrl-C|X -> Ctrl-V shortcuts that Windows users are used to.

Right Click => Copy
Right Click => Paste

Usually it's something like Shift + Ctrl +C / Shift + Ctrl + V.

This is one of the reasons Arch doesn't sound appealing to me. I don't need the latest and greatest in everything. I just want something that works and stability.

You have to see it from my perspective, I've been using Linux as my main desktop for the majority of the time since 2007, including my job. To me Windows is the outsider that does everything differently.

^tbh Windows has been a pain in the ass to me lately with their forced updates, bloatware and whatnot. I've been wanting to transition to an Apple product for work, but with the world supply shortage I don't think they'll hand me an upgrade for at least a few months

Which is one of the reasons Windows sucks. I was being genuine with that comment. I think forced updates should never be a thing. Microsoft doesn't own my computer. They sure do love the data they mine from users though.

The bloatware's so obnoxious too. My dad's computer takes close to ten minutes to be operable when he turns it on and logs in. I'm sure it wouldn't be like that if he were running Linux Mint. I might encourage him to switch a year from now once I've become familiar with that.

Edit - OK, it probably takes his computer more like six minutes.

Yeah Linux is both amazing and shitty at the same time.

On the bright side it's just more reliable and better built, on the downside there are a lot of weird things, ctrl+c not working in the terminal is one of them for sure.

To be fair, there is a good reason for that. ctrl+c is the shortcut to kill a process (end task in Windows). And that dates back farther then ctrl+c being "Copy to clipboard".

I was gonna say this but I can't remember if that's what it does in Linux or not.

also until recently, windows command prompt had its own issues, actually maybe related to the ctrl-c is copy issue. an administrative command prompt would for some reason not accept ctrl-c to terminate, so if you did something like setup a continuous ping (ping -t) you would not be able to stop it. (though it would still print out the stats when you hit it which I think I now realize must just be a part of ping.exe to listen for ctrl-c and print stats just before dying.)

instead of ctrl-c is copy, there's the mark and copy system instead (which is actually more useful anyways), but it also varies depending on which command prompt you're using.

I think they have smoothed this all out in Windows 10 now; this all mostly applied to XP

I think the worst thing about Linux is probably the lack of support/compatibility. Wine (Win. Emulator) has been helping and I think Steam has gotten a lot better about games working on Linux.

Is it though? Wine is a recursive acronym meaning "wine is not an emulator". Because it's a native implementation of the winapi. They've even implemented DirectX natively so that calls don't have to be translated to opengl or vulkan.

sposed to be it's not an emulation it's actually natively implemented (I guess that is what kind already said).

otherwise, what does "emulate" even mean? if a native implementation is emulation, then everything is emulation and the word loses any distinction/meaning. (not that I'm surprised that a term is being reduced to meaninglessness for the sake of contrariness on gamefaqs...)
