man these balance issues

cleared the first phase of p4s today as dancer, did about 7300 rdps which got me a 91st percentile parse, 3rd out of 32 dancers who have cleared the fight

i was curious so i checked, a bard that did 7300 rdps would be about 150 out of 230 cleared bards, and only have a 35th percentile

i'm feeling sort of self-conscious 'cause i feel i'm griefing, the DPS check is so tight we had to do a flawless run and even then just barely beat it with 6 seconds to spare. idk how much difference it makes but bards are doing about 300 more rdps than dancer on average, so...

i'm trash at bard though so i really couldn't have switched over anyway

hopefully phase 2 goes alright

It is funny coming from WoW where DPS can get up to like 20% difference in a fight to see these severe balance issues for what seems to be about a 4% difference

Really shows the standards 14 has, makes me happy if I ever decide to try savage stuff

14's homogenization of classes has its upsides and downsides, but man i wish there was unique class identity from wow combined with not having to farm shit every day endlessly in order to raid from xiv

i have SO much more fun with wow classes (raided on resto druid and disc priest and played mistweaver monk casually, and xiv will never have anything like them), but the rest of the game sabotages it

Orbonne Monastery is in Golmore Jungle? Interesting.

Not sure how I feel about this whole story yet. It's definitely incredibly convoluted, to say the least. I'm a huge nostalgia guy though, so seeing Fran just now was quite fun. Though they mentioned the princess having died earlier, and now are talking about one as alive. Ashe I assume.

I think I have time to run this tonight, jumping in the queue.

I wonder who the 4 bosses are going to be, assuming there are 4 again. It's in Golmore, so maybe that dragon thing from FF12 (Elder Wyrm I think?). Guessing Ultima will be the final boss. Other two.........trying to remember who the last few people you fight in FFT are, it's been a while. There was Balk (and those damn hydra things) right beforehand, and Vormav before him. Randomly them maybe?

Hahahah so true. I think most of the people in my raid were vets, as the comments didn't go crazy (and one even hinted at what to do beforehand, though I didn't understand what was meant until it happened). Was still quite funny though. I like the uniqueness of that at least!

I mean, I'VE done it before....as a Warrior, and I had a White Mage.

Probably didn't help this time that the DPS were 2 Monks who weren't the best at avoiding AOEs.

I think that's part of the Mt Gulg issue, it's not like the packs are absurdly strong, it's that they're absurdly big models and all the same color as the background and it's one big clusterfuck That last pull especially is nonsense to keep track of the AOEs for.

healing a drk right now is a miserable experience if they aren't both geared and competent

i consider myself a very good healer and i've just run out of buttons to press in wall pulls (mostly on whm, but sometimes on sge and sch), being forced to mash my cure2 to delay the inevitable

It didn't help that he pull ahead so far that even with sprint and Icarus I couldn't target him until we reached the end of the path.

Monks were with me, too!

I'll still take it over the level 85 gear Paladin who was in Expert roulette and single pulled only, and only used his single target attacks after his initial single AoE to get aggro. I was playing Dragoon and ended up pulling all the aggro before the packs died every single time without fail other than the single enemy he was targeting, and he didn't even TRY to take it back.

The 89 gear is FREE, buddy.

Got Reaper to 90 tonight. The class is just really fun to play once maxed out. You basically always have some kind of cooldown to use, it feel really flashy and powerful, and its not all that difficult to use. Excited to try bringing it into Pandemonium this week.

Finished all of Alexander Normal. Gotta say, it felt like something out of a shonen anime movie. In that some big bad thing is happening and needs to be stopped, but it's largely unimportant to the overall plot and might as well have been filler. I have no idea if it'll get brought up later in the game, but it felt isolated from everything happening. Maybe the sheer fact that you're fighting a cult goblin group meant that it wasn't suppose to be taken seriously.

Great music though!

I only struggled with A4 and A5. The rest of it wasn't all that bad. I guess it helps having your ilvl 40 levels above the minimum for duty finder, and that I bothered to actually look up the mechanics of the fight from A6 onwards to not stress the other healer as much. Definitely felt like I was seeing Sages the most for the other healer in my raid parties.

It was among the remaining things I still had to do from Heavensward, so I'm glad to be done with it. Highly doubt I'll be doing any of the Savage raids anytime soon.

Alexander is mainly worth doing for references made to it later. Other than A8 and A12 I actually do not care for it much myself. I'm also really just not a fan of the lead up traversal and mobs, which they thankfully do not do moving forward.

A4 is a legendary bad fight that almost killed raiding in FFXIV. It doesn't show nowadays really unless your party is just playing horribly or you're min ilevel.

A4 Normal was never a problem.

It was A3S and A4S that almost killed raiding. Pepsiman was brutal for most casual groups and if you managed to get past him, the worst mechanic in all of FF14, Nisi, was waiting for you.

Also A2S is just not a good fight (neither is A2N really, but its easy at least).

I like Alexander's plot overall, personally, and its cool it gave some lore on Au Ra before we actually got to a zone with Au Ra properly in it. Kind of sucks when you learn that Mide's tribe ultimately got wiped out, though.

So the biggest issue with Gordias is that it was mathematically impossible to clear week 1 - the DPS check was tuned such that you needed at least 1 DPS with the tomestone weapon in order to do enough damage to clear A4S. The devs later admitted that they tested Gordias by enabling god mode on the test party and walking around resolving mechanics without DPSing, then set the boss HP numbers at what their models said players should theoretically be doing.

Even past that the tier had some legendarily difficult and janky mechanics. In A3S, Digititus requires the entire party to recognize and pass debuffs with very little time to adjust anything. The Hands require extraordinarily quick and precise positioning by the tanks or else they just wipe you. On top of all that, the boss has a cleaving tankbuster with no castbar or telegraphs, so if your tank slips up and forgets to mitigate at the right time they just die. Now imagine having to do all of this on NA ping, when the fight was designed with JP internet structure in mind. Even today if you go back and try to do A3S at a contemporary item level it's ridiculously hard.

A4S is of course infamous for Nisi, an extraordinarily hard-hitting dot that could be passed between members and was needed to resolve a mechanic several minutes later into the fight. The dot ticked for way too much, and in NA at least players quickly discovered that it was less of an overall raid DPS loss to just let Nisi fall off and then resolve the later mechanic by letting two DPS players and your off tank die rather than overtax the healers by forcing them to heal Nisi for five minutes or whatever it was. To their credit SE learned their lesson from this and since then have been very careful to design mechanics that a) are not such enormous pains in the ass to resolve in the "correct" way and b) can't be cheesed by any combination of letting debuffs fall off and letting players die.

Special shoutout to Faust, the trash mob in A1S. Faust is a pure DPS check, with no mechanics and nothing to stress healers. All you have to do is kill him and the adds he periodically spawns. In spite of this, for weeks after Gordias released there were Faust prog parties on PF, because NA players simply could not comprehend how to press their buttons. Not only were raids designed very differently back then, player skill was much worse.

I was going to make a snide comment based on my experience with PF's inability to kill P1S but player skill really was worse.

Additionally, cross-world party finder did not exist back then. You were limited to the pool of players on your own server and it was legitimately very difficult to find people good enough to clear even Extremes on an average sized server like Cactuar (yes I know it's come a very long way lol).

Thankfully the devs spent the final tier of Alexander smoothing out the raid experience

So I just ran Orbonne.

I did indeed call the final boss, so that was fun. Did not at all call the first three!! When Mustadio showed up as the first one, I was wondering if certain other ones would then be the next couple.

I was not at all prepared for the next two. When Orlandu introduce himself, I literally stared open-mouthed at my TV lol.

Definitely best alliance raid I've done so far, though I died at least 5 times in total (and we wiped once on Agrias)
