Board 8 > ITT I play Final Fantasy IX (spoilers)

So I'm gonna play Final Fantasy IX. I have plenty of time to play this game while I'm visiting home for the first time in this pandemic. You guys said I should play this one (and to a lesser extent FFV) so I'm giving this a shot! Yes, it's the remaster so I guess when I fall asleep to the fight system I can go ahead and speed things up. I don't know too much about this one, but I know vaguely about a lot of characters in it.

What I want to ask upfront, in the first maybe 6 hours in the game, is there any important missable stuff? I've heard there's some missable stuff. Please don't post any major spoilers or anything until I get to them either though! I start maaaaaybe tomorrow!

There's a bunch of missable stuff (notably some equipment and therefore some skills)

There's tons of missable stuff throughout the game. If you're careful, you shouldn't miss anything that matters.

FFIX is honestly notorious for missable stuff.

It's kind of fucked in that way lol.

Buy the official strategy guide, it's very useful!

I don't think there's anything important that's missable.

Don't worry about missables, there are too many and it will ruin your experience trying to hunt them
Besides, you won't be able to 100% the game anyway as there is a item you can only get if you beat the game very, very fast

Tag. There are a lot of missables but I wouldn't worry about it unless if you were going for all the trophies/achievements.

Been busy with the holidays and I was too tired to play during my flights!

But I ought to have more time to putz around and put time into this into the coming days!

I have officially started FFIX finally! I got past the first bit where the ship crashes! I played too much of the card game though. I ran out of battery on my switch so I guess we'll wait and see if I can get it charged at my layover.

go into your Config menu and change the battle speed to maximum

SURPRISE!

So I wasn't able to find a charge back when. Aaaaand I was extremely worried because I thought I lost a ton of progress. But I didn't! It has a continue option that works more as an auto save? I dunno if that's new for this but I expected to have to backtrack which I wasn't into. Also, just been busy!

But anyway, crash land into a place literally called EVIL FOREST. That is the most on the nose name ever. So Garnet gets taken by a... prison? Sure. I definitely accidentally let her die once. Whoops. But I didn't let my boy Vivi die. I then went through dialogue and such until we got Steiner and Vivi on board to fight. I absolutely missed whatever Blank was trying to tell me after he gave me my stuff. Something about the boss? Oh well.

The combat system still feels slow with the maxed out settings, unless I missed an option in there to speed it up? It's... very brutal, really. I didn't think it would be but man it definitely is. I'm also debating whether or not to use the Wait option. Normally I don't mind it, but it feels like it makes more sense because it's not like a Chrono Trigger where people can do combos and stuff.

Yeah, I didn't get very far, but I did make progress! Sweet progress.

Combat in general is pretty slow.

It'll get faster later but is still painfully slow compared to other entries

There's a triple speed option in the pause menu but if you're already using that, yeah it's slow. It gets more bearable later for sure though.

There are a few weapons I would consider invaluable, but thats about it

Just reached Disc 3 today.

I keep telling myself not to play Triple Triad, to just play the game and enjoy the story and not go collecting everything.

Then it's another twenty card battles later and I just want to race a hippo so I can move on.

This playthrough is moving along at the speed of an FFIX battle

I went through an Ice Dungeon! But first, the overworld is pretty cool. Solid set up of standard FF fair. Battle system is more tolerable now. But I enjoyed the Ice Dungeon for the most part. Unique little area with added stuff to do with blowing up ice stuff with Vivi. Simple until everyone passes out and we get a Black Waltz who is like a swole af Vivi. Cool. I stole until I got the good stuff from both bosses since I was in Trance mode with Zidane.

Also, is Trance mode supposed to be so busted? Because I took no damage and went through so many turns without it running out.

Anyway, I walloped them easily and then I kept getting everyone in trance mode? Is that supposed to be happening? Because I feel like I accidentally turned something on I shouldn't have. I should probably putz around with that next time I play in probably 5 years.

But I also guess we're calling Garnet "Dagger" now...? Because that's weird. Is this some kind of joke thing? Like does she go back to Garnet later? Because I've only ever heard her called Garnet.

You probably accidentally triggered the god mode thing that's in the remaster along with the speed boost, would explain why trance seemed so busted when it's normally the worst thing about the game IMO.

No Dagger is her intended name, but people are dumb

I call her Dagger exclusively!

And yeah you probably pressed the wrong buttons to get OP, I think the pause menu should have the button combos in the corner or something so you can get yourself out of it.

Surely we have made some progress now.

Edit: Oh, I forgot I already posted that. Huh. I thought it was a lot sooner, but I guess levelling up your beak to 90 and exploring every nook and cranny John doesnt move the story forward.
