I didn't play this game super extensively. What am I looking at?

so, my pyre, the thing I have to protect or I lose, is at 1hp and the final boss of the run is at the top floor of my train. if it gets past this one dude, literally any hit kills me. this was my only units left alive and its honestly a miracle I survived this long because I had fought off several floors of encounters with essentially this one guy (the other things are doing 0 damage). he (it?) has decent stats but most notably it can just tank the next 65 hits.

the boss rolls up to me with full hp (over 2000 to my 100) and my dude just no sells the whole thing and the run is won. you can tell by the X next to the bosss HP.

I love Monster Train because building degenerate stuff is basically what you're supposed to do and yet the game is remarkably well balanced in spite of it

To be totally honest with you, this isn't even scratching the surface of how dumb stuff can get

Highly recommend Monster Train for those that haven't played it.

yeah I can tell its going to get a lot weirder. Im only through the equivalent of ascension 5 so far and its really not that tough. Im struggling more with the random mobs than the bosses so far.

I think Monster Train doesn't get quite as intense as Slay the Spire does (my winrate on the former is much better, even with DLC, which I do recommend picking up at some point), but it definitely does get demanding to the point that your setup in that first picture might not be sufficient

oh it wasnt sufficient and I should never have survived. it was an awful build that honestly is a little disappointing that it even worked. but, I know thats because Im on a pretty low difficulty so far.

Maybe Im not doing Slay the Spire right, but its so boring compared to Monster Train to me. Im probably doing it wrong, but it feels like the actual improvements to your deck/kit you can make arent as immediately impactful.

monster train is certainly more show-y and explosive while slay the spire is smaller and more subtle. so far I definitely prefer slay the spire but theres no way it could replace it in just a few hours.

If you've ever heard of Timmy/Johnny/Spike, I think that Monster Train is more of a 'Timmy' game whereas Slay the Spire is more of a 'Spike' game - I don't mean that as a criticism of either one
