It's still good but definitely aged and overshadowed by where the genre has gone since.

Voted #2

Closer to #1 than #3. I've replayed it somewhat recently on the DMC collection on normal and had no desire whatsoever to do the higher difficulties. It's just a bit clunky even compared to medicore games in the genre like God of War.

The series didn't really become great until DMC3, which still holds up completely today.

I bought a PS2 on ebay in like 2008 that came with 30 games. This was one of them, and even then it felt outdated. Never made it very far, but I bought the Devil May Cry remastered collection recently so certainly open to giving it another shot.

Should I just skip 2?

I always advocate playing a short bit of 2 just to experience how bad it feels. Then skip it.

I absolutely adore it. It was my favorite in the series before DMC5 came out; the OST, amazing horror atmosphere, incredible enemy design, feature rich gameplay even by today's standards, it's a quick replay too so I'm always breaking it out.

DMC2 has bad plot (worse than DmC to me, it's just boring-- at least DmC edgelord cringe gets a reaction from me) and the gameplay is terrible considering your guns do more damage than your sword.

It also isn't really necessary for plot continuity in the least so I'd just skip it

I love it for the atmosphere and bosses (which are admittedly more difficult than they actually are because of the camera, Nightmare 3 I'm looking at ya). I still have a blast going back to it. Its got Original Resident Evil kinda charm for me, which is something that will never fade with time.

What's the deal with the DMC plot? I've only played a bit of 2 at a friend's house like 20 years ago, and remember nothing. What's skippable and what's not?

DMC2 is skippable because they never reference the characters from that game again.

All the others ones connect (somewhat loosely) and have side characters make reappearances and stuff.

I have to say it has more old game charm than it has old game frustrations. It has fantastic atmosphere and the enemies are cool. Higher difficulty changes up the enemy placements. The combat is barely a prototype of 3 but nonetheless functional and a good starting point. The cutscenes are silly in a rather less self-aware way than later games but they're still entertaining.

And 2 is craaaap. Really deserves its reputation. The defining moment everyone talks about is a helicopter boss assigned too much HP. So you stand there and shoot it... and shoot it... and shoot it.. It goes on.

2 is just bad in every single possible way to an extend where it's kinda hilarious.

1 is a great game, but it's definitely aged by now, non-surprisingly. It doesn't feel bad going back at all, but you have to be aware of its place in time to appreciate it fully. Voted the second option.

I've never played 2, but to put in perspective how important it is to the narrative, watch the plot recap they put in DMC5. Literally all they say about it is something like "And Dante went on other adventures, too."

Also, it originally took place after 4, but they switched those before 5 came out presumably to downplay why the events of 4 come up more in the game.

Perhaps I am an uncultured slob, but I thought the controls were needlessly complex. Like the launcher attack you had to hold a shoulder button, hold the stick away from the enemy (which depending on camera angle could be difficult to figure out which direction that is), AND then press and hold a face button. Other "DMC clone" games of the era just had the same move on a single press-and-hold of a face button, while DMC used two face buttons for identical gunfire. Why couldn't we just get one gun button and one launcher button?

I've been told before that the duplicate gun buttons were needed so you could press both to mash the pistols faster than you could on a single button, to which I say why not make a single press of the gun button give you two shots, one with each pistol?

Yeah the two gun buttons in DMC1 is pretty pointless but I don't think the actual combat is complicated at all. You're pretty much always holding R1 because it's the lock-on button so R1 (while holding back) + Triangle for launcher doesn't seem like much of an ask. Also the direction you need to input on your controller never changes so you don't really need to try and figure out what direction Dante is facing.

FWIW you only have to tap the button to launch enemies, you hold the button to launch AND bring Dante into the air with the enemy. Sure it could have been a launcher button in the first game but air combat in the first game is garbage anyway so it would be weird a dedicate an entire button to launching.

In DMC3 they replaced the 2nd gun button with the "Style" button instead. You pick a style before the level and depending on what you pick the button will either give you more melee attacks, more gun attacks, a dodge, or a block/parry (and a few more options). You level up that style to get more abilities for each.

In DMC4 they kept the style system but allowed Dante to switch between all styles during a level instead of only picking 1. The Switch port also added this feature to DMC3.

There are mods for the PC version that add the style switcher but otherwise yeah it's just on Switch.

Also you can swap between all guns/weapons on the fly too instead of having to pause the game to switch and there's 2 player co-op Bloody Palace mode.
