Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie - it's set at Christmas, but Christmas isn't necessary for the plot (it could have been any party), not are the traditional festive themes necessary to the film. It even released in July when it first came out. It's no more a Christmas movie than Jurassic World (which was another Summer Blockbuster where the plot was kicked off by the protagonists travelling for Christmas).

But, that said, while it might not be a Christmas movie, it has definitely become a Christmas tradition. Watching Die Hard is as much a part of my annual festivities as the turkey, the tree, or the desire for the in-laws to finally fuck off home.

I did read a theory on that once, I can't recall off the top of my head how strong of a theory it was though.

If it's because Reginald VelJohnson appeared as a cop, then your universe would have to include:
Ghostbusters
Trading Places
Coming to America
Turner & Hooch
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins

No there was a lot more to it than that. I'll try to remember to take a look for it.

people in the theater sing Let It Snow when the end credits roll?

It's a Christmas sing-along.
Let it Snow makes no reference of any kind to Christmas

Which is why the song is played year-round. How silly of me.

Is Die Hard in the Family Matters Universe
In my head cannon the events at Nakatomi tower inspired Carl to move back to Chicago, and reconcile with his family.

the time of year that the song gets played has no bearing on whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie
