I liked it as its own thing.

And that was before the updated version which only made it better.

The gameplay and atmosphere is great. Story and characters, not so much. I'd say it is also the easiest game in the series apart from DMC2 but I haven't played this one on the harder difficulties.

It's solid. Better than DMC4, worse than 3 or 5.

It's worse than every actual DMC game except for DMC2 which is a trash fire.

Gameplay is decent enough but not as good as 3/4/5 and everything about the characters is incredibly cringe and not in the fun tongue in cheek way the actual games are.

Games journos did love it though and even after Capcom unrebooted the series with DMC5 they still would occasionally try to rehype DmC.

It did bring us Dont, el exterminador de demonios though so it's not all bad.

No, it pretty much IS all bad.

Gameplay is the exception, but even then, its a bog-standard spectacle fighter. Nothing revolutionary. Bland, really.

Writing, characters, story are all bottom of the barrel objectively bad. It comes across almost like edgy fanfiction parody but with nary a single hint of irony, so it wants you to take it seriously.

If you want to blow some money on a good cringe, it's certainly an option, but you can get that for free just about anywhere

I played a little and it seemed more or less competent, even kind of getting the idea of the series, but I really doubt that it's better than 4.

Seems like you haven't played many character action games then if that's the worst!

DMC4 has issues (mostly the repeated content in the back half) but IMO it feels significantly better to play than DmC. And Nero >>>>>>> Donte.

The area design is the main thing I dislike about DMC4. Moving around anywhere feels terrible. It's not that bad during combat, but it feels like that's less than half the game with how big the areas are.

4 is cool because it feels like proto-Bayonetta. Nero is a fun character to play (although he's greatly improved by V) and it gives Dante on-the-fly style-switching.

I thought the gameplay was fine?
Not very polished like 3 or 4 so you can get SSS by mashing buttons like a moron, but still enjoyable to an extent

Everything else though..especially the story and the characters, sucks badly

I would take DmC over 4 (and 2, obviously). While the controls in 4 are great, the game lacks interesting enemy and level design to make use of those new controls. I found the level designs in DmC to be quite impressive, so it at least has some elements that stand out compared to the rest of the series. As long as you play it expecting something different, it's fine (which I imagine was easier to swallow when I played the whole series for the first time last year instead of experiencing it with the mindset of it being a poor reboot). At times, it felt like an odd attempt at the Sony action-adventure formula.

3 and 5 are leagues better than anything else in the series, of course.

Gameplay is good but leans too much into gimmicks at times to the point where it's not fun. The most blatant example is that some enemies can only be hurt by certain weapons. I don't want the game to outright force certain tactics.

I also feel like it needs more audio cues on attacks rather than just visual ones-- proper DMC games I can often dodge even offscreen attacks just by the sounds they make. This one I seem much less able to do that (but possible I've just played it less?)

Story is a joke. DMC games in terms of story are stupid with charm-- but for me that really works and they're fun. This one decides to take itself way too seriously, removing the charm and in its place oozing edgelord replacing cheesy quips with FUCK YOUUUU. It's cringey on the whole-- though at times it gets so completely bad you can almost ironically like it if that's your thing.

Anyway I still think it's worth playing (pure gameplay is probably behind only DMC3 and DMC5) and I would actually be entertained if the series pulled a No Way Home and had the game's mockery of Dante in an entry at some point, in a small role. Moreso than I would to see anything out of DMC2 at least

DMC3 > DMC5 >> DMC4 > DmC > DMC1 >> DMC2

I really think the big thing here is that DMC5 came out so this is no longer "the game that killed DMC."

Looking at it today I agree with what's already been said - the actual combat is solid (especially in the definitive edition) though not as good as 3, 5 or even 4. It does have probably the best level design in the series and some really creative visual design. The story and overall writing is really, really awful though it almost swings back around and becomes enjoyable again for how wretched it is.

I always felt that the gameplay is good but the writing is cringe as fuck
By "good" I mean it's enjoyable. It isn't deep or anything. I remember when I played DMC3 I used to read a lot about advanced strategies. It was full of terminology I don't really remember anymore
But on DmC it was just mash buttons and get SSStylish or whatever
Still kinda enjoyable but shallow

Classic case of one of your hyperbole reviews.

You make good points about Donte and the director's cringey ego trip, self inserting him as a beloved character from a beloved VG franchise. The character redesigns are definitely bad. The game self sabotaged itself from the get go with fans of the series because of all these things mentioned.

However let's not pretend this game is anywhere near the spectrum of a Superman 64 and E.T like you claim it is. Hell it beats the living shit outta DMC2 and arguably is on the same level as DMC4 (which is another flawed game in the series, but for different reasons).

I don't know how any fan of the genre could actually dislike the gameplay though. It may be a bit too easy in comparison to the rest of the games in the series but that can be solved by cranking up the difficulty to your standards.

Ulti's negative reviews always remind me of that time Smurf said something like Super Street Fighter 4 was bad because of the menus looking worse than SF4.

Like harping on the platforming which is hardly even a thing (I love DMC3 to death but find the very few times in the game it requires limited platforming to be more obnoxious than anything in DmC) just feels like you want to address some negative points and then hit a character limit rather than honestly reviewing the game.

I'll give you that in some reviews I act way to negative, but DmC is not one such review. That game is indefensible gutter trash with an even worse director.

No one who openly shits on the fans of a series gets a free pass. Fuck em.

You're too fixated on the fact that the director designed Dante to look like himself and that is reason enough for you to overlook everything else and call it a 0/10 game.

Like the complaint about platforming sounds like double standards just like someone here mentioned, considering there are way more obnoxious platforming sections (especially if you go for all the secret missions) in literally every other title in the series except DMC5.

If Dante were redesigned to look somewhat similar to his past incarnation and not like the director's ugly mug, I'm sure you and a lot of other fans will be judging the game way way less harshly.

Red enemies blue enemies is actually bad yeah. I said as much in here. More organic enemy weaknesses are better. Like DMC3 has the spiders that are weak to Agni and Rudra but you don't literally NEED to use them to kill them. Even better are less direct weaknesses where the techs themselves just make it simpler to kill enemies. Like the simplest example is using the shotgun against Cerberus in DMC3 to blow the ice off his face-- not needed in the least but the shotgun puts out more hurty objects than rebellion or Ebony and Ivory do at that point so it's best. But when you fight him in new game+ or the boss rush this can be duplicated with different techs and weapons.

But regardless red platform blue platform doesn't really matter at all.

Color coded enemies is bad but it's an issue solved by the Definitive Edition. Still bummed that version never came to PC, even if you can get most of its perks through mods.

I believe you that Defininitive Edition probably makes the game a lot better but ultimately with games in this genre on subsequent playthroughs the question for me becomes

"Why would I play this over Devil May Cry 3 or 5" (or Ninja Gaiden Black/2 or DMC4 if I'm feeling like "something new")

So I could play Definitive Edition but I doubt I ever will unless I play way more DMC3/5 than I ever expected myself to (since Id rather master those games on Dante Must Die mode first, and I haven't come close to that-- I've beaten DMC3 on it but it was VERY messy. Never even beaten DMC5 on it.)

Like I'll play outright new games to experience the gameplay and story, but for replays I'd rather just keep replaying the best. They haven't gotten old to me yet.

I saw the What Happened? of this game. Production-wise it sounds like the unholy lovechild of Metroid: Other M and the Ghostbusters reboot if something like that is even possible. Hard pass.

Obviously I can't judge the game, but I can judge the circumstances that led to its existence. Good riddance Inafune.
