Major spoilers:

you lose one of the main characters 3/4th of the way through the game when she realizes she's actually supposed to be the bad guy. You get her back just before fighting the final boss with her level & equipment unchanged and you basically have to do the entire end of the game with just 3 characters.

That's kinda neat, but I wish they scaled her >_>

Yeah its serious. The first final fantasy came out in 87 and lufia came out in 93. Ff4 came out in 91 and you could target individual enemies

Edit: also I'm 36 and had the first ff as a kid

FF is a NES game. Lufia, despite the graphics being terrible is still a SNES game.

Yes you would have to fight one battle, go back to town to heal, go outside and fight and heal again. Once you get to level 3 it is a lot more bearable.

This was my experience as a kid and I think it's the better experience from a story perspective. I had no idea what was going to happen to the heroes at the end of Lufia 2 and legit shed some tears over it. Played Lufia 1 later on and found it the inferior game. But still found it playable.

The big problem with this is it outright spoils Lufia's identity so the whole first game loses its biggest twist.

In Lufia 2 you get a similar twist in Iris being the baddie. You could argue that the Iris twist is obvious since it happened in Lufia 1, but playing Lufia 2 first, you don't know about that Lufia 1 twist. Having played that before the 1st game, I didn't know I was getting a different version of it. It was fresh to me. And the impact of going through this journey with Maxim and Selan, having no idea they were going to die (since I hadn't played the first game) had a huge impact on me watching the ending. And the fact that they were leaving their kids behind.. heartbreaking.

I'm really doubtful that if I played Lufia 1, the experience would have been nearly as emotional, and/or the Lufia/Erim twist would have been big enough that I'd prefer playing 1 before 2.

And did it spoil it? Lufia 2 doesn't allude to events of Lufia 1 because Lufia 1 hasn't happened yet. So playing Lufia 1, you get introduced to Lufia, is there any reason for the player to believe/know that Lufia is also Erim by the end of the first game, other than guessing/assuming?

Either way, I stand by playing Lufia 2 first as far as the story goes. It is quite a downgrade from a gameplay perspective going from 2 to 1, though.

Then Maxim says something like "But you showed up here as Iris and Iris always helped." Then she tells Maxim how to stop the Fortress from falling on a populated location

Yes. That action is what turns Erim into Lufia. Honestly the sinistrals are interesting from a lore perspective. While lots of bad guys are just bad because "I'm bad" the sinistrals actually have a vested interest in their respective domains because of potential bad consequences. Erim isn't a bad person but she does what she does because if she doesn't then she's the one who has to suffer.

Her decision at the end to ultimately help Maxim is what sets up the first game.

i mean you fight a guy named badbad who looks like the count from sesame street!
that is quality you dont get in good games

i highly recommend secret of the stars to anyone who likes jrpgs
but no one should ever play lunar 3
unless you want every jrpg ever made to seem great in comparison
