Decembers Games:
DOOM (1993) (PC/XB1/PS4/Switch/iOS/Android/360/Xbox/PS3/GBA/SNES/Saturn/PS/3DO/Jaguar/32X)
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (PC/XSX/PS5/XB1/PS4/Switch)
Unpacking (PC/XSX/XB1/Switch)
Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PC/XB1/PS4/Switch/PS)

What is Game of the Month Club?
Game of the Month is a community project open to all B8ers where users share, discover, play and/or discuss a select few games every month. The games featured each month are chosen by YOU the users (and Lady Luck)

The Basics
- Each month will usually feature three games that were chosen via a random drawing from a pool of games that users nominated
- For each game you beat, you get a cool point on our just-for-fun standings as well as a nomination for next month's randomized drawing
- In order to receive the point and nomination, you must beat said game within the calendar month
- If you beat one of the current month's games in the previous month, you can apply for a "recently beaten waiver," but you will only receive a point and no nomination should you do so
- Drawing for next month's games is around a week before the end of the month
- If you periodically keep us posted on your progress and/or talk about different aspects of the games, then everyone will think you are super awesome!

Nomination Rules
- You get one nomination automatically each month
- You receive additional nominations each month for every featured game that you beat
- Each game you nominate has to be unique from all other nominations and cannot include a game that has already been selected for GotM
- Each game must be a standalone game that can be acquired and played on its own (aka cannot be DLC/expansion that requires the base game)
- Nominations only carry over if you beat a featured game after the drawing for next month's games but before the end of the month
- As a special feature for 2021, you have 11 supports you can use throughout the year. Your only limitations are that you can't support your own nomination, and you can only use one support per game per month

I actually got stuck in the first puzzle in Unpacking because I had no idea what they wanted me to do with the diary after I unpacked and placed everything. I guess that making my desk drawer a school supply drawer was "wrong"

Beat Unpacking.

Fun little game. Can be annoying at times when you have to place items in spots the game specifically wants when you think it's non-specific but it wasn't that big of a deal.

I'm up to like 2010 in Unpacking. There was one item in 2007 that I had no idea what it was and held me up for awhile. I thought it was an apron, but I was apparently incorrect. Whatever it was, it belonged in the bedroom.

I'm still on the first world of Spyro as I'm taking my time with that one and trying to complete each level before moving on, or as much as I can before I am forced to end the level.

I've hit a wall in Unpacking. I'm not stuck, but I'm now at a point where I have to go through dozens of boxes through five or more rooms. The initial novelty has worn off quite a bit, so it feels like more of a chore right now, but I'm hoping that taking a break for a few days will be all I need to get back into it.

I found out that there's an option to turn off "incorrect" placement of items, and that made the game more enjoyable and honestly realistic. There are still several objects that appeared in mutiple years that I have no idea what they were.

Agree with KCF, more or less. I didn't turn off the "incorrect." option, but I do kinda wish I had. Also thought it looked like an interesting way to tell a story, but I didn't enjoy it a lot on that level, either.

I bought Doom. Not sure when/if I'll get around to playing it, though.

I started and finished Knee Deep in the Dead today. I never could figure out how to get past a certain part of Phobos Lab my previous times playing DOOM (which were via the Steam version's reportedly poor DOS Box emulation), but it sure left a good impression on me. Today inevitably didn't quite live up to those memories, even with my not-quite-as-subpar shooting and secret-finding skills. I still found DOOM simply a fun game to play, though, no relativity required. I certainly wasn't expecting the ending of Phobos Anomaly, either!

Cody has beaten Spyro: Year of the Dragon

Good game in a good trilogy. I definitely got nowhere near the end as a kid lol. Hard to pick between 2 and 3 but after playing both this year I can safely say 1 is my favorite. I love the focus on platforming, the simplicity is more my cup of tea. I do appreciate them adding more characters and a plot in the sequels though.

Looking to start GotG soon.

I am more than 50% complete with Year of the Dragon. I always liked the different characters, and I think they did an excellent job remaking them. While most of my vivid memories about mini-games/isolated activities that I had negative feelings toward are from Spyro 2, I did come across one here that I must have forgot about in the original version. There's one where you are in control of Stella and have to stay ahead of these dumb whatevers hauling bombs in the swamp level in order to break rocks and stomp on mushrooms. This is basically a long series of trial and error because of their erratic movements (each character has their own path you must pay attention to), mushrooms only stay down for a few seconds, and the windup needed to get Stella above or on top of a mushroom. I was so glad to get that one over with.

Anyway, when I first played through the games in the early 00s, I want to say that my ranking was 3 > 2 > 1. When I bought them as PS Classics about a decade ago, that changed to 3 > 1 > 2. As it is shaping up right now, the Reignited Trilogy is making me think 1 > 3 > 2. While there are some standout exceptions in Year of the Dragon, I guess that I never realized how much more elaborate the level design and subsequent platforming 1 had over the rest.

Ripto's Rage had some really cool level themes and ideas, but they were primarily built around orb challenges, so it ultimately felt lacking in certain regards. Year of the Dragon had the right idea to put those in isolated areas, obviously with eggs instead of orbs, as to not hinder their creativity and general level design.

I know that I said this same thing when Ripto's Rage had its month, but it is relevant!

KCF has beaten Spyro: Year of the Dragon

I was just going around collecting gems in Midnight Mountain when I stumbled upon a door with Bianca saying that I could fight The Sorceress now. I thought sure why not, and here we are. I still have many levels I haven't gotten around to yet, and just about every level in the third world is not 100% complete, so I will probably wrap everything else up by the end of the year.

Episode 4 is kind of bad, in the sense that it feels like a bunch of leftover maps that were rejected from the first release thrown together without really much thought put into balance and difficulty curve (so you often get hard maps followed up by much easier maps). I remember one of the maps around the middle apparently being a bit notorious because there aren't enough ammo pickups to actually kill all the enemies in the stage if you were playing it as a standalone level or starting from scratch.

Though I kind of felt like it was already starting to drop off in episode 3. But that's kind of how shareware release games tend to be. The first, free episode is usually the best overall to bait people into buying it and the rest drop off sharply because everything's basically the same thing but there's maybe 1 new level background/enemy/type/weapon and there's a lot of padding or some more unfair/poorly designed levels get through quality control.

like I enjoy Crystal Caves, but episode 2 has this infamous pixel perfect jump in one of the levels due to the ceiling being too low to get a collectable and then episode 3 it's possible to get soft locked and unable to complete the game if you did the levels in the wrong order and saved after completing them because they forgot to put a barrel or some sort of platform in the hub to get back up to where you were before (so you have to finish those levels last). Well, the recent rerelease did apparently fix those problems though.

Abacus has beaten Doom (1993)

Yeah, the episodes slowly got worse as they went. E1 and 2 were pretty good, but then 3 was way too complicated/intricate for what it needed to and 4 was just way too unfair. The first two levels & last two levels especially. The middle levels were actually kind of easy, and quick to run through.

I am glad I played it though, and overall enjoyed it for what it was.

As for my last nomination, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
