What level Pokemon did you have out while throwing various balls at Palkia, Uzie and Azelf? Were they lower level than the opponent Pokemon?

I think you got killed by the catch rate penalty then. Pokemon that are a higher level than the Pokemon you have out are significantly harder to catch.

Continuing on, I hit up route 222 and found a level 41 Chatot (named Polly). From there, it was a trip down route 222, clearing out the trainers there, which proved annoying because you had a string of fishermen with Gyarados, and I didn't have any of my Electric-types available. Still, I got through there and traveled up to route 223. I found a level 36 Tentacruel, and despite the assholes being notoriously tough to take down, I managed to crit with Quick Attack, thus ruining my catch for route 223. However, I realized there's a single, one-tile-wide strip of water that's technically part of Sunyshore City, so I surfed around there until I found a level 31 Mantyke (named Irwin). I wound up using Barbara (who's still a corpse, but I figure can be used for evolution) to evolve Irwin into Mantine, and he's of course useless. Another useless Water-type to add to my team.

Anyway, I fought all the trainers along route 223 (love how focused on Water-types this godawful region is), and I ran afoul of a double battle with Pelipper and Drizzle. I was using Eileen and Polly, since I had mostly weak Water-types on my team, and they both got OHKOed by Rain Dance-powered Water moves. So...wonderful. Awesome. RIP Eileen (Level 36 to 41). RIP Polly (Level 41 to 43). But nope, useless Irwin doesn't get killed. Of course not. In fact, I then went into the underground to clear all the new habitats (since Sunyshore opens a new section of the underground map) and level up for the final gym. I made a mistake down there too. Fought Gravelers, but the Graveler I was fighting had Sturdy. Colleen got it down to 1 HP, and I figured "I don't want to waste a PP on a Water-type attack that's actually useful. I'll use Zen Headbutt." Zen Headbutt missed, and the Graveler proceeded to Rock Blast Colleen to death. RIP Colleen (Level 21 to 47).

Picking this up again soon. I've been spending the past week catching everything that unlocked in the underground in Diamond, but I just finished doing that, so I'll be picking Pearl up again. Need to unlock the national dex to get some version exclusives, after all.

Dammit, had a whole post typed up and closed the tab by accident.

I was leveling my team up to 50 in anticipation of Volkner. Even though he's an Electric gym-leader, due to Sinnoh's shitty Pokemon selection, he has a diverse team that can't be stopped by just choosing Ground-types. And I thought I'd finished, but as I was putting together my team of Grass- and Ground-types, I realized that Sylvester was still down at 46. So I threw a Lucky Egg on him and went underground to beat on some Houndooms and Gravelers.

Three levels later, I was at around 35% health, but I needed maybe two more battles to level to 50. I figured a Golem could take out two Ponyta to get the necessary EXP. One battle went by fine. The second, the Ponyta used Low Kick. For those who don't know, Low Kick is a Fighting-type attack (stronger against Rock) that does more damage to heavier foes (Golem is thicc AF). And with that, I lost my long-running Geodude. RIP Sylvester (Level 5 to 49).

With Sylvester's leveling a flop, I picked out my team and went after Volkner. His gym was annoying, because again, there are only three fully-evolved Electric-types in Sinnoh, so a bunch of trainers had Psychics or Steelix or whatever. I beat him all the same though. Sure, I wasn't exactly prepared for the number of Ice Fangs that would've been 4x effective against Rafael or Shay. But I had Stephen with me, and cursed body disabled Ice Fang long enough for Shay to Bulldoze Luxray into oblivion for the win. With that, I now have all eight gym badges, and next up is Victory Road and the Elite 4!

Well, the game has markedly become more difficult. I got to Victory Road and caught a level 45 Graveler (named Creed) to replace Sylvester, but he didn't last long. I wound up fighting an Ace Trainer with a Clefable, and my only Pokemon with either Steel or Poison attacks was Dani. Metal Claw did not OHKO, but a critical hit Moonblast did. And when I sent Creed in to Earthquake the thing to death, another critical hit Moonblast took him out as well. RIP Dani (Level 35 to 52). RIP Creed (Level 45 to 46).

Things continued going wrong (though I'm not REALLY complaining, since I'm mostly using my D-team and I had 30 Pokemon upon entering Victory Road) as I fought a Veteran, and I had nothing particularly strong against Hippowdon. I figured I'd send in Irwin in hopes he could OHKO with Bubblebeam, but not so much. Irwin survived the Crunch attack with 4 HP, but Hippowdown's ability kicks up a Sandstorm, and that's all it took to kill Irwin. RIP Irwin (Level 31 to 52).

And then I fought a tag-team of Ace Trainers, who both apparently know how to play Pokemon. I'm so used to NPC trainers sucking that they caught me off-guard. Staraptor Close Combatted Erin, and Whiscash finished her off with an Earthquake, while Sumara could only flap helplessly. The Whiscash tried to finish her off with Zen Headbutts, but she outlasted and survived the battle. RIP Erin (Level 3 to 50).

I finally got out of Victory Road with my four casualties, and decided to surf the waters of the Pokemon League for my final catch of a standard Nuzlocke run. A level 39 Tentacruel (named Tyana) joined the party, and at this point, I know I need more training. Cynthia is notoriously hard, even for non-Nuzlocke players, and I'm averaging 12 levels lower than her strongest Pokemon, across the board. So I went back underground, only to discover that the level boost for beating Volkner is unforgiving.

The Gravelers, in addition to knowing Explosion and Earthquake, now have Stone Edge as well, giving them three of the strongest moves for their respective typings, and Sturdy, so I can't hope to reliably OHKO them. Woody fell victim to this first, as an Earthquake crit killed him, and then Samantha died to a Stone Edge. My batteries are dying, so this is the end of my update for today. RIP Woody (Level 16-51). RIP Samantha (Level 8-51).

God...dammit.

I was working on leveling my team to 55 (I go in five-level chunks), and I'd gotten through most of my low-tier Pokemon and was only my upper echelon. And I'm down to my last three: Violeta, Rafael, and Shay. Everyone else is 55 and I've swapped some of the lower-tier guys into the rotation. Now, because I have a trio with Water and Ground attacks, I've swapped back to fighting Gravelers and Houndooms. But I don't want to send Violeta out first, because I'm terrified of Stone Edge. So I'm using Rafael. And he's doing fine. He's got Giga Drain to heal up on Gravelers (I know his attack stat is better, but against Gravelers, a high power special attack is still 4x effective), and is basically chugging along great.

So I wind up fighting a Houndoom, and this WHOLE time, I've been operating under the assumption that Rafael's Ground-typing would cancel out his Grass-typing to make Fire attacks neutral. I was wrong about this. We're at the level where Houndoom naturally learns Flamethrower, and Rafael is slow as fuck, so he moves second, gets blasted by a critical hit Flamethrower, and survives with 5 HP. And then the burn hits. I then had to watch and PRAY that Earthquake would OHKO this Houndoom, but the burn condition was JUST enough to lower my attack so I didn't get the kill. And despite Rafael being my starter and having all those "Rafael looks at you expectantly" friendship actions, he did not power out of the burn. Nope, the burn dropped him to zero, and I lost my started Pokemon.

The sad thing is that I was literally thinking to myself, how in my previous attempts at Nuzlockes, my starter is lucky to make it to level 20. I have a history of my starter getting blasted by a crit, or me thinking they're just a lot stronger than they really are. But now, after almost fifty levels, he doesn't get to make it to the endgame. He doesn't get to square off against Cynthia. The massive wipeout of six Pokemon from my last update is NOTHING compared to losing Rafael. RIP Rafael (Level 5-53).

I'll say one thing though. Between my Pearl Nuzlocke and my normal Diamond run, I specifically went into these remakes, wanting to use Torterra, since I'd never done so before. And if I'm being honest, it didn't impress me all that much. I mean, sure, it gets Earthquake really early. But until that point, you get no Ground-type attacks by level. And despite having a stronger physical attack stat than special, it does not learn a physical Grass-type attack after level 13, with Razor Leaf. How the hell does this NOT naturally learn Seed Bomb? Because it's not like you can just pop a physical Grass TM on it. Despite my current sadness over losing a long-term survivor...I'm not coming out of this playthrough thinking any more positively about Torterra. It still stands out as being FAR inferior to its starter counterparts.

Well, my efforts at grinding levels (I'm still only 60 across the board) in preparation for Cynthia have caused another casualty. I was fighting a Machoke and sent out Edgar, thinking that his Aerial Ace would be enough for an OHKO. But Edgar has plagued me this whole Nuzlocke, since he's Bold nature, and thus his Attack power has been weakened this whole time. Aerial Ace got him low, but not KOed...and the Machoke used Counter. THAT killed Edgar, for sure. Lame, but I'm not losing any sleep over it, since Edgar wasn't particularly amazing. RIP Edgar (Level 3 to 55).

I've gotten my full team to 65 at this point, and I'm trying to pick what Pokemon I want to use to take on Cynthia. It's tough, because Cynthia is tough in her own right, but Lucian has an annoying collection of Pokemon as well, and then my strongest six don't cover Aaron in ANY way.

Right now, I'm thinking Chase (Fire beats Dustox, Beautifly, Vespiquen, Heracross, Bronzong, Smart Strike beats Mr. Mime), Pierre (Grass beats Quagsire, Sudowoodo, Hippowdon, Whiscash, Gastrodon, Milotic, Dazzling Gleam beats Spiritomb), Amelia (Water beats Golem, Rapidash, Infernape, Steelix, Ground beats Drapion, Rapidash, Infernape, Steelix, Lucario), Violeta (Back-Up Water-type, Crunch beats Drifblim, Girafarig, Alakazam, Ice Fang beats Garchomp), Butch (Fighting beats Lopunny, Lucario, Steelix, Sudowoodo, Golem), Stephen (Back-Ups across the board)

First off, I forgot that there was probably going to be some sort of final battle with Brennus until I was just getting ready to face the Elite 4. I used my six strongest Pokemon (Butch, Stephen, Pierre, Violeta, Shay and Yuri, in that order) and swept him in six attacks. Then I swapped out to the group mentioned above to take on the Elite 4.

Aaron really wasn't a problem. Chase took the lead and OHKOed Dustox/Heracross/Beautifly with Flamethrower, and then Vespiquen tanked the attack, only to get burned and do minimal damage with her Aerial Ace immediately after. Butch went out to Earthquake Drapion, which didn't QUITE do enough for the kill, allowing Drapion to Cross Poison and poison Butch. Then Aaron Full Restored, Earthquake didn't finish the job, Aaron Full Restored, Earthquake didn't finish the job, and I finished the fight with a Knock Off to conserve Earthquake PP. Some Full Restores of my own later, I was ready for Bertha.

Pierre kicked things off with Magical Leaf to take out Quagsire (I was trying to conserve Giga Drain for stronger opponents). Magical Leaf didn't finish the job on Whiscash though (due to a Rindo Berry), getting Pierre's speed down via Bulldoze. THAT made me Giga Drain, knowing Bertha would Full Restore, and I switched over to Amelia to take on Sudowoodo. Earthquake didn't quite OHKO, forcing me to tank a Double Edge, but at least the next hit finished the job. Then it was time for Golem. Aqua Tail hit hard, but Sturdy prevented the OHKO. Knowing Bertha would full Restore, Amelia hit Golem with Toxic, ticking off JUST enough health for a second Aqua Tail to get the (essentially) OHKO the next round. And then Hippowdon went down in one shot from Pierre's Giga Drain to finish the fight. Simple as that.

Flint was the first really DIFFICULT battle. I started things off with Amelia again, healed up from the previous fight, since I wanted to save my stronger Pokemon for later battles. Earthquake OHKOed Rapidash, before failed to do the same on Steelix. But, if their use of type-specific berries wasn't bad enough, this elite 4 understands switching Pokemon out. I tried to Earthquake again, only for Flint to switch into Drifblim and avoid all damage. At that point, I switched to Violeta, who got Will-O-Wisped immediately, and is apparently slow enough that she couldn't hit first with Crunch before Drifblim minimized and avoided the attack. Thankfully, BDSP's friendship mechanic allowed Violeta to power out of her burn, just in time for Drifblim to Baton Pass that minimize to Steelix again. And it dodged not only the Crunch meant for Drifblim, but also the potentially-KOing Waterfall, allowing it to Thunder Fang Violeta down to 5 HP. I switched to Amelia to give Flint a taste of hhis own medicine at that point, and Thunder Fang was useless. Despite its inferior accuracy, Aqua Tail was enough to finish the job, forcing Lopunny into the fray. Butch went out and Vital Threw her to death, since High Jump Kick just wasn't good enough. Drifblim came out again, but Stephen was ready for it, and a Shadow Ball finished the job. That left just Infernape, and though it outsped Stephen to use a Fire Punch, Stephen's Psychic scored the OHKO. Everyone survived the first three battles, and I just needed to heal up in preparation for Lucian.

Lucian is where things went off the rails. I specifically sent Chase out first because he has Smart Strike, and I did not want to risk Stephen against a team of Psychic-types. Turns out that Smart Strike didn't do enough to a goddamn Mr. Mime to even bring him past half health. Enough time to put up a Reflect, for sure. So I'm stuck, fighting a Mr. Mime with Chase (who is my second-weakest Pokemon after Amelia), and I managed to take him down, but not before getting crippled by Psychic attacks. Then Medicham comes out, and I'm debating how to do this, because it's got a lot of good coverage moves, plus Pure Power, and decent defenses. At THAT point, I go with Stephen, because my best alternatives are Butch and Pierre, both of whom are vital for Cynthia. Stephen successfully takes the Medicham out, and next up is Alakazam. Again, this is a Pokemon with extremely good coverage moves. I could've easily sent out Violeta, but I was worrying at that point about Cynthia, so I decided to keep Stephen in. After all, he's my strongest Pokemon, and he's probably my fastest Pokemon, right? Turns out, he's not faster than a Timid Alakazam, and Psychic OHKOed Stephen. However, Stephen's Cursed Body ability disabled Psychic, which meant I could send out Butch without fear. Even with Reflect still active, an Alakazam holding an item is gonna be hit HARD by Knock Off, and though he managed a Future Sight, I OHKOed Alakazam.

Next was Girafarig, and my options were limited; I realized how many of my team were weak to Psychic, so I was forced to send out Violeta for the Intimidate in hopes of Crunching it to death. I don't remember the exact sequence of events, but I feel like what happened was I used Crunch and that didn't OHKO due to the Reflect still being active. It didn't use Thunderbolt, but instead used Trick Room, so I switched to Amelia to dodge the Thunderbolt the next round. Then I believe I got one weak attack in with Aqua Tail, while tanking a Psychic, and then got the notification about Reflect ending. So I sent in Violeta, since Girafarig would've Thunderbolt a Quagsire...but when I tried to Crunch and finish the job, Trick Room made it move faster, and Thunderbolt killed Violeta. At that point, I think I took advantage of Trick Room to let Butch move faster and win via Knock Off. Finally, Bronzong was more annoying than anything else. Butch used Knock Off to take out the Sitrus Berry, and just kept using Knock Off as Lucian used Full Restores over and over, before finally having to resort to ineffective Earthquakes. At least I won in the end. RIP Stephen (Level 12 to 67). RIP Violeta (Level 20 to 66).

That put me up against Cynthia. With Spiritomb, I could only really send out Pierre, since he was my only Pokemon left with Fairy-type attacks, and Dazzling Gleam, while able to score over half Spiritomb's HP, didn't OHKO. A Sitrus Berry brought the Spiritomb out of 2HKO territory as well. Meanwhile, Psychic devastated Pierre, so I tried using Giga Drain, hoping it would do enough damage, and heal me enough, for a 3HKO. Instead, it was just weak enough for Spiritomb to finish the job, ending Pierre. Chase's Flamethrower took out the Spiritomb at that point, but I was in a ROUGH spot. Gastrodon coming out didn't help matters, since I no longer had a Grass-type. Butch took over with No Guard Cross Chops, doing a decent amount of damage, while Gastrodon Rock Tombed me with speed decreases. He switched into his own Roserade, so I switched to Chase again, dodging the worst a Dazzling Gleam had to offer. Flamethrower finished the job, putting me only down 4-3. RIP Pierre (Level 29 to 67).

At that point, Butch was able to finish off the Gastrodon, but I still had the toughest trio ahead of me. Initially, I sent out Amelia to Toxic Milotic, negating her Flame Orb, but after a Full Restore, the orb took effect, and I was forced to send out Butch again, and he just tanked every ounce of offense Milotic had. Scald and Ice Beam never did enough to bring him into the danger zone, and I just kept Full Restoring after every attack. Eventually, Milotic was forced to start using Recover, and I used an Elixir to restore my PP, before eventually managing to stall out Cynthia's Full Restores, Recovers, and forced her to uselessly throw out Mirror Coats until finally getting the KO to finally put me up 3-2 for the first time all battle.

Lucario went down to a single Cross Chop, because for whatever reason, he chose Flash Cannon over Dragon Pulse or Aura Sphere (though none would've gotten the OHKO). That left just Lucario, and though I no longer had Violeta, I still had Amelia with Ice Beam. I tanked one Earthquake, and Ice Beam was ineffective due to the Yache Berry, but at least I burned that berry early. From there, it was just a matter of Hyper Potioning against repeated Earthquakes until I got lucky and Amelia friendship-dodged one, leaving her at full health and able to tank another attack. Ice Beam finished the job, and with that, I successfully defeated Cynthia! 3 deaths en route to victory, but in the end, I stood tall with Amelia (Level 18 to 68), Butch (Level 36 to 67), and Chase (Level 13 to 67). Amelia and Chase were two of my weakest, really only brought along to deal with bugs and Mr. Mime/Bronzong (Chase) and dodging electric attacks from Flint's squad (Amelia), but in the end, both came out clutch to crown me the champion of Pokemon Shining Pearl!
