The miniseries Station Eleven starts tomorrow. As early as this morning I thought it was still weeks away.

I think my concept of time broke years ago when someone asked me how old I was and I didn't just know off the top of my head.

The Tribe

This is definitely an intriguing concept, but there's a good bit that holds it back. Most notably, it's pretty goddamn hard to stay awake through. Making a film entirely in sign language could work, but removing any sort of audio design (including music) requires having visual design to compensate and keep things interesting. The Tribe does, occasionally, but in between long, dull takes of almost nothing happening. It doesn't help that with no voices, similar appearances, and similar behaviors, most of the characters largely blend together.

I still don't get certain aspects, like why they strip-searched him initially? And where are literally any adults anywhere in this movie?

There are some REALLY striking moments in here, particularly near the end. The bottle smash over the head in particular was chilling, followed by the nightstand head crush scene. Some of the most brutal stuff out there (and I hate that it took me until the fourth nightstand to realize why nobody was waking up to all the commotion).

But some of this feels borderline exploitative, particularly the long, hard-to-watch abortion scene.

Hard to rate this properly, because it's extremely ambitious, but I also didn't really enjoy it much at all. 6/10

my guess(es) for now other than the aforementioned wire theory is that they were looking for identifying marks (tattoos, etc.) from rival gangs/organization or signs of drug abuse/self-harm that would indicate him being some kind of liability if they brought him in. honestly everything seems like bit of a stretch but we'll probably never find out.

i did think it was strange that they apparently got to decide their own living situations? like they can apparently choose among themselves which rooms they want and they're free to do whatever. like when he gets kicked out of the room with all the other gang members. at least one of the adults is the one with connections that lets the gang run their little operation iirc though.

haha i thought something along these lines too on my first watch. like "what the fuck how does no one hear...oh"

to me more than anything, that just reminded me how foreign this world was. not the criminal aspects but how like any other foreign language film where some cultural conventions or attempts at humor don't make sense to me because there are just aspects where it just doesn't even cross my mind to think about.

The Tribe

i apparently forgot how long the takes were. i think the ending scenes just pushed everything else out of my mind. i did feel more impatient this time around and i think i ended up liking it less this time around. some of the scenes i can see the reasoning for being long, particularly all the uncomfortable ones, but there are others like the scene where they're getting passports or standing in line where i'm thinking, "surely you could have cut this down a little without sacrificing any of the intended effect?" maybe it was to make all the takes more or less consistent in length more than anything.

I did always say I like the film more for the experience than the film itself and that's still true. I do admire the decision to not provide subtitles where we're pretty much dropped into this world with no guidance. Although that does come with the consequence of the story being rather simplistic in order to remain accessible.

The best word to describe this film for me would be cold. From the weather to the relationships to the characters, everything just feels so distant and detached. The long uncomfortable sex scenes I'm thinking about how freezing it must be, particularly the first one where they're in like a boiler room or something (?!).

One thing I also noticed this time around seems pretty obvious in retrospect but how simple thing like carrying objects would hinder communication even a little bit. They would be signing with one hand because they were carrying something and I'm wondering if their conversations are "shortened" in any way. And if someone is doing something you don't like, it's much easier to just ignore them. Makes the themes of isolation/belonging more pronounced.

I considered lowering my score to a 7 but I think I'm going to keep it an 8 for now. I mean I still think about it from time to time so there's that. And the rest is silence

I will say the dead aspect came to mind most when it came to the rape scene near the end (I guess it was a rape? Didn't seem very consensual but it wasn't particularly violent or forceful so it's hard to say what exactly they were going for there) because like, even with someone sleeping a few feet away from her, it's not like she could call for help, or even really communicate with him much

In general the awkwardness of purely non verbal communication showed up a lot in the sexual aspect

Luca
I knew very little about this movie going in, though I think I watched a little of its trailer months ago and forgot most of it. Luca is a very competently made film with a ton of heart; it's very fun to watch throughout with gorgeous animation that Pixar is known for. The dynamic between the main characters is excellent.
I do have a few small grips. The premise itself is not as memorably unique as some of other Pixar outings. The villain's take-down was really quick and could've been more satisfying. And the sea monsters being accepted right away didn't really feel all that natural.
But yeah those are minor enough and it was still a very lovable movie. Shout out also to the character designs that felt familiar but different enough, I'm glad Pixar's not too attached to their usual human proportions and such.

I know that Vespa was in rough shape, but I hope they got something for it other than a single train ticket to Genova. Bad trade, that's how those guys start with a stick of gum and trade their way up to owning Amazon or however that works.

Movie is fantastic in most ways. Looks and sounds gorgeous, voice acting is great though not watching a lot of western animated movies it took me back when Jim Gaffigan all of a sudden started talking, not used to hearing voices of people I'm familiar with.

Plot... everything felt safe? Kind of reminds me of a lot of Marvel movies, where it feels like a non-comedic madlib where they just insert new names and places into the same madlib and pass it off as a new movie. Feels like I've seen this before without having seen it before.

And if you take the most accepting group of people in the world, on top of that make them super vegans who would as soon kill themselves before eating an egg, and all of a sudden you put a harpoon in their hands and magically a sea monster appears in front of them... that sea monster is getting 'pooned. I know that's not a story they're going to tell in a movie mostly geared towards children but everyone seemed way too okay way too fast about that.

Twilight Samurai
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yan4CaKs5X4

My favorite samurai film. Fell in love with it right away and have since watched everything adapted from Shuhei Fujisawas work, and while I love almost all of it Twilight Samurai is still my favorite. I'd love to read his books instead of only watching adaptations, but whomever is in charge of his estate refuses to sign off on translations so the single collection of stories from over a decade ago is all there is. Glad I bought it years ago as it now routinely sells for 20-30 times what I paid for it.

I love the setting. It always feels strange to me that my least favorite part of a samurai film is the fighting, seeing as it plays such an integral part of most of them. It's hard to blame Koei for utilizing the 'One Man Kills Thousands' style of combat in the Warriors series when most samurai movies eventually have a scene where one man is constantly surrounded by swords on every side and yet he wades through them all, while they take turns meeting their end. Nothing of the sort here, outside of the short duel, if you can call it that, in the middle of the movie there's just the one battle at the end between two men, neither of whom truly wants to be there.

I wish there were more movies where the samurai are the focus rather than the swords.

Twilight Samurai

So I guess the real winner was architecture.

Engaging story for the most part but I couldn't shake the feeling that there was a lot more that I was not being shown that I would have liked to see. Not crucial information but things that could have been explored to give the dramatic moments more weight in my mind. The scene with him being told off for smelling was a horrifying memorable moment that I'll keep in my mind for a long time. I would have liked to see more scenes of his everyday life though.

IIRC there was one moment where he was labeled as a man of "no ambition" and that's such an interesting departure from the typical depiction of samurai in my mind.

There was a moment where I was wondering why the story was being told from the daughter's persepctive considering she wasn't present for a lot of the big moments like the talk between Iguchi and Tomoe and the final fight but then it got to the ending reveal and I was like 'oh.' Did feel a bit abrupt and again, I would have liked to see maybe some more moments of his life after because I want to see my boy happy. But I guess thematically it fits with the idea that despite what we were shown, relatively he was just another low ranking guy in the system. 7/10

my hbo max runs out on jan 6 and netflix on jan 9. being subbed to streaming services is really convenient but every time i'm not watching something i think about how i'm bleeding money

going to try and binge some stuff on those two before i cancel and do my disney+ trial for Luca + stuff. i'll probably finish my rewatches of ITOET and Pi to finish up my club watches though.

then i'll go back to the sea life for a while i think

on another note i really hope more platforms do same-time releases for streaming/theatrical past pandemic age (who knows when that will end at this point though) because i watched Matrix Resurrections and would never have watched it in theaters. it is just so insanely convenient being disappointed by major film releases in the comfort of my chair instead of paying $20 to drive somewhere and do so.

as for Matrix Res

i know i said "disappointed" in the post before but i wouldn't describe that as how i felt about this movie. i was more confused than anything. confused about whether i like it or not that is. liked some things. hated other things.

i love Matrix 1 and i've heard it described as one of those 'had to be there in that moment' movies. i'd imagine for someone seeing it for the first time recently it might not come off as amazing as it did back then. actually did rewatch it relatively recently and i liked it even more than i did when i was younger.

anyway Matrix Res. it was definitely a movie. i legitimately laughed out loud at one scene when he tried to fly near the end because at that point i was paying like half attention and it caught me off guard. it definitely did make me just want to watch the first two and a half movies again though. i fuckign love Trinity

I'm Thinking of Ending Things

the film i was most hesitant on revisiting out of my rewatches even though i thought it was great because of how soul-crushingly depressing it is. surprisingly though there were a couple of instances that i found humorous as well (and didn't remember until i saw them again), particularly the genius/genus mixup. the rewatch definitely makes me appreciate the effort and ambition in this one but also i don't think i'll ever watch this one again unlike other Charlie Kaufman films which i love. 8/10

Luca

competently made but i don't think i'll be thinking about this much in the future. enjoyable in the moment but no lasting impression. agree that the sea monster acceptance in the end felt like it happened way too fast, especially considering that they make it a point that THAT specific town was known for having it ingrained in their culture to kill sea monsters with their statues and stories and whatnot. If it was going to happen like that, they could have just taken out the sea monster aspect and it wouldn't feel so different i would think. 6/10

#31: Murder By Death

Obvious last place here. I couldnt believe what I was seeing half the time in a wow they really did that kind of way.

#30: Cut Throat City

Promising potential that failed to deliver and in turn made me more frustrated with it so it gets the second to last spot here.

#29: The Man Who Killed Don Quixote

Went on way too long for me. Like Adam Driver though.

#28: Its Such a Beautiful Day

I wanted to like this more because of the seeming quirkiness but I just remember more parts of it landing on the grating side.

#27: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

This position is probably interchangeable with Beautiful Day since I remember feeling similarly, particularly the intended humorous parts where I didnt really find very funny.

#26: Aguirre
#25: The Muppets
#24: Stalker

Some parts I liked at the time but not enough.

#23: Long Days Journey Into Nighy

The same but had more of those parts I liked.

#22: Melancholia

Actually liked almost half of it.

#21: Munchausen

Come on, that kid was NOT playing college football.

#20: When Marnie Was There
#19: Luca

Serviceable but overall lower-tier films from their respective animation studios.

#18: Big Fish

Sure were some big fish in this movie.

#17: Nobody

Just put the trash out the night before bro.

#16: We Need to Talk About Kevin

I had so much I wanted to say after I finished this at the time but I said I would write it up later and now I dont remember what I wanted to say. Just goes to show that if you dont do it in the moment youll likely never end up doing it at all. At least for me anyway.

#15: M

#14: The Guilty

Maybe if I watch the original, this will go down.

#13: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Some parts of this were actually so cool.

#12: Saint Maud

Definitely will be remembering certain scenes for a while.

#11: Cool Hand Luke

Probably the most surprising out of the watches in that I enjoyed it as much as I did because I was not expecting much before I started. But a good story is a good story. Still mad about one part though.

#10: Hoop Dreams
#9: Sound of Metal
#8: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
#7: Twilight Samurai
#6: Barry Lyndon

Some GREAT parts but not enough on the first watch to push it into that thoroughly enjoyable tier for me. I would be willing to rewatch these.

Top 5 are all pretty close to each other and positions could be switched around in the future. I will definitely want to rewatch these at some point.

#5. Thoroughbreds

Memorable and fun characters in a relatively short, contained piece.

#4: 45 Years

The buildup to climax is so good and I love all the revealing little subtleties in their conversations that still feels natural. Incredibly strong performances.

#3: The Vast of Night

The dialogue and interaction between the main characters were so instantly captivating and fun that it makes it this high despite my issues near the end.

#2: The Love Witch

This gets better in my head as time goes on. I do remember the Renaissance stuff being a little slow but so much memorable imagery and the colors ahhhhhh. Looking forward to a rewatch to see how itll come off now that I know the basic plotline and what its going for. But it might also be one of those films where I like the idea of it more than the film itself.

#1: House

Transcendent.

Top 100 would be a lot tougher than a top 10, there's probably a lot of movies I've seen and would put on that list that I just don't remember having seen or at least haven't thought to add to my list. I can pull the top 1XX from my ratings list and remove my least liked ones until it gets down to 100, which I imagine is mostly everything 8.5 and above and would be as close to a top 100 as I'm likely ever to get.

I'll see how it looks a little later. Maybe the culling is easy enough and the ordering would just be the difficult part.

Edit: Apparently, I've seen exactly 50 of that sites users top 100 movies list.

The biggest problem I'm having is the 'all the movies I've seen' part. If I could somehow pull that information from my brain my watchlist would have an extra 0 on the end most likely. Thanfully, 99% of those movies probably aren't ones I'd end up putting in a top 100 list, like there's no way Halloween 5 or Friday the 13th 8 is going to be on my list, so I don't think it would change much.

Edit: Everything I've rated 8+ puts my list at something like 165 movies, so that's my starting point.
