Eternals beated

uhhhhh

I very much enjoyed that? Like it completely blows my mind that this is what makes for the first Rotten rating for the MCU?... This was so much more interesting than a whole lot of the MCU's output.

One thing I was concerned about myself was introducing so many characters and letting them stand out but I felt Eternals did really well with it.

I will say there was some silliness at the end that kinda threw me off but overall I just really liked it. I've watched bad MCU movies before but this was not one of them.

with splitting hairs with similar quality entries, Eternals is definitely better than almost all of Phase One, half of Phase Two, a couple maybe more of Phase Three, and half of Phase Four

Hawkeye is coming this soon? Will be worth it just for Yelena, but I'm interested to see what Hailee Steinfeld will bring to the table too.

Now four actors who were in the Coens' True Grit will have been in the MCU.

I saw Eternals yesterday as well and thought it was good. It was definitely a very different style of movie when compared to the other MCU movies but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Just movies, yeah it's just a fun technically accurate line lol. Shang-Chi > Eternals > Black Widow.

But it really astounds me that Eternals is the one that caught all this flack when Black Widow was such complete garbage just a few months ago.

I've never really been that big of a fan of Avengers 1 personally, it was really cool at the time for being the first big collab but there's a lot of it I don't really enjoy watching. I do think it's next best in line though and I doubt most people would prefer Eternals to Avengers but for me it was an easy decision. Non-IM1 non-Avengers Phase 1 movies though all defffffffffinitely worse.

Finally saw Shang-Chi, it was good! I was impressed how well I was able to avoid any spoilers for the last two months, since I didn't really know anything about how the story was going to unfold.

I wasn't expecting it to go full on mystical creatures with a demon/dragon climax battle. Was also surprised the beefy eye candy henchman survived. Movies and TV shows love killing those guys off too quickly. They almost did it though! I saw that deleted scene too.

I'm kind of glad to read that GMUN doesn't think very highly of Avengers 1. I liked it when I caught in on TV randomly in 2018 but mostly in the sense it feels like the kind of blockbuster movie studios strive for. Otherwise there's nothing particularly notable about the actual film. I do feel similarly about Infinity War and Endgame - they're all movies I respect the heck out of more than I actually like them.

Watched the last two episodes of What If. I kind of liked the last one but the eighth left me a little confused at times.

Sorry about the double post, but somehow I couldn't edit the previous message.

I want to talk about Captain Carter for a second. While I enjoyed what she brought to the table in the last episode, it really rubs me the wrong way that she has otherwise gone beat-for-beat the same path as main-timeline Captain America. Also I didn't remember Hayley Atwell's accent being this thick and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm getting a feeling she isn't terribly used to voice acting, although maybe someone will enlighten me. Something still feels lost in the transition to animation with her (and uh no it's not just her you-know-what), though it's probably an issue with the character of Captain Carter compared to Peggy in the main timeline.

While I am ashamed at what I specifically said about Atwell and Johansson in the other topic, I was more trying to convey how attached I've gotten to both actresses and their takes on the characters they play in the MCU. I'm honestly kind of astonished this is the case given I haven't seen Agent Carter or The Winter Soldier, but I suppose that's all the more reason to get to them! I was trying to say what I said in a way that wouldn't objectify either actress and evidently I did a terrible job.

With the eighth episode, honestly the only thing I really liked was watching Natasha and Clint interact. This series is far from horrible but it feels hit-and-miss at best, and little more than an excuse to milk established storylines and satisfy fans who didn't like some aspects of the main timeline. Sorry if this sounds cynical, but in fairness I'm far from the only one with reservations about Phase 4. And anyway I was largely fine with Wandavision, didn't hate Black Widow as much as some here did, and mostly just found Loki boring because it took place mostly in hallways and offices.

I thought she was great and loved her. Can't wait for more of her in season two.

I also feel like the first episode of What If completely missed the point of Captain America: The First Avenger. I feel partial to that movie due in part to its WWII setting and its exploration of black-and-white morality (especially the touch of the villain faction being a splinter group of Nazis too evil even for them!), and that episode barely touched on either beyond the on-the-nose sexism aimed at Carter. Bah.

With Scarlett Johansson, I also really enjoyed her in Her, even if that was a voice-only performance dubbed in entirely in post. I also remember the Honest Trailer for the remake of The Jungle Book making her voice out to be seductive, but then again those have a bit of a tendency to be a little perverted.

i think one thing that's sorely missing from both the first avenger and what if ep. 1 (and something the rocketeer did better) is the appearance of swastiskas. these are very much "kiddie" versions of stories about nazis, while in the '40s captain america comics, steve rogers was literally punching hitler.

i did too, just saying the rocketeer did that particular aspect better imo.

first avenger did other stuff better (like not having outdated early '90s visual effects).

rocketeer deserves more credit for being an influence on iron man 1, though. iron man 1 blatantly ripped off certain shots from that movie!
