I feel like, just because a game might be more iconic/influential, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's better and/or more fun.

Burnout three is crack cocaine and I've spent a lot of time playing it, but Chrono Trigger is a completely different level of game in terms of quality and importance.

Good it's not OOT, FF7 like usual. They were groundbreaking at the time but games have evolved a great massive amount since then. If I was developer who was forced into a year of crunch I would think "Why the fuck am I doing this if people just wanted OOT?"

A lot of these older classics we love honestly play like garbage in "the modern day" so really not surprised many of them won't resonate with the current/younger generations used to modern gameplay.

The responses in this topic like GOW or GTA V dont deserve to be considered GOAT because theyre not OOT or FF7 is fucking hilarious.
This site really lets two video games be overrated to hell and back, complains about it every yearand then complains when any other game gets acknowledged???? GOW is easily one of the best single player experiences ever. Has a fucking amazing story, its characters are brilliant. And the combat is so satisfying and rewarding. The way they elevated what was a pretty mundane hack and slash game IMHO to the the leading example of what makes video games amazing is astonishing honestly. And then on the flip slide you another titan of the video game industry showing why theyre the best at what they do. GTA V is a cultural totem pole, and you cant deny that. It deserves all the recognition it got. The 3 characters and the switching mechanic took a very reliable formula and completely flipped it on its head. You can joke theyre continuing to reprint the same game on every consolebut they wouldnt be doing that if people stopped buying it. This is a very interesting final two to me. Its like Art vs Popularity. GOW is, imho, as perfectly anyone could hope execute a game, but GTA V is a juggernaut with a massive cultural footprint. --- Like 90% of CE topics are the same way lol.
