Hey friends.

So if you remember, I watched a ton of horror movies all through October and I ranked everything I saw! It was a fun list and I think people liked it. I capped out at around 100 or so. Well, I plan on doing that again this year! I also did multiple ones per day, making the "one per day" thing a little much. So I'm just going to ditch the one per day, because I'm gonna watch one per day anyway (with exceptions).

This time, I'll take recommendations from people I'll go out of my way to make sure to watch if I have a viable way to do so. I have Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Hulu TV, HBO Max, and Shudder to play around with, so if it isn't on any of those you might have made up a horror movie that doesn't exist or something. If it's a super obvious one most people have probably seen, chances are I've seen it. Like yeah, I have seen the original Halloween and gave it a 10/10. I likely will not be watching it again.

So this is basically a horror movie recommendation topic, really. I'll add some myself as well from horror movies I've watched in the past year.

Oh, here's one I can recommend and talk about.

James Wan's Malignant is the most ridiculously amazing thing I've seen. They finally let him just do another crazy fucking horror movie. The third act of this thing is the most wild thing. Watch it, watch it.

Dracula 2000 (2000)

It's not winning any Oscars but the casting of this movie is so random it's part of what makes me enjoy it. Oh and Wes Craven's name is attached to this film even though im really not sure how much involvement he actually had

I think Malignant is an instant classic. For me, there aren't a lot of horror movies that come out anymore that I would feel like rewatching again, but this is certainly an exception. I cannot wait to give it another two dozen watches!

The only drawback to rewatching this movie is knowing what's coming up.

Going in not knowing what would happen made this movie just so much better. What a truly, truly special movie. Fucking campy bonkers madness.

Oh wait I did watch Empty Man in October of last year.

The Empty Man - 8/10

Clearly I had a more high opinion on it than Snake. And tbh, I think the ending was the part that brought this movie so high for me. I had serious problems with the movie (mostly pacing issues and it did not need to be as long as it was) but I thought it did a ton really well.

Also I'm going to tryyyyyy not to overlap with last year's movies. Mostly because I want to try adding these two lists together for a super list at the end of the month.

I dunno if I'll shell out money to see the new Paranormal Activity on fucking Paramount Plus (which will likely be baaaaaad), or I think there's some solid stuff on Apple TV.

Aside from that, I have most other reasonable apps covered for consumption.

It's usually my type of ending too but I didn't think it was very much earned or built up to all that properly. Trying to be vague as not to spoil anything but yeah, between that and the massive pacing issues (as you brought up) the movie felt like a pretty big waste of time to me. But I can definitely see the appeal in someone enjoying it.

I dunno, I think they built up for the ending perfectly. Obviously, no spoilers, but the amount of subtlety they involved in it was pretty satisfying for me that when it all comes together, I was really into the movie as a whole.

It's such a bizarre, disjointed film. But the elements that clashed together seemed to actually work out for me? I can see why you wouldn't be as high on it for sure though.

Er, here's my top 25 horror movies (at least, films marked as horror on Letterboxd...). 2. House (1977)
3. Eraserhead
4. Videodrome
5. Alien
6. Possession (1981)
7. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
8. The Cremator
9. The Shining
10. Audition
11. The Thing
12. Psycho
13. Suspiria (1977)
14. Rosemary's Baby
15. Get Out
16. Cure (1997)
17. Hereditary
18. Carrie
19. Carnival of Souls
20. Inland Empire
21. Night of the Living Dead
22. Halloween (1978)

It's fantastic, but I am not sure I agree with Letterboxd labelling it as 'horror.' There were a couple others I skipped because I could not even conceptualize them as horror such as Un chien andalou and Jan Svankmajer's Alice. Unsettling, yes, but horror?
