Also lol at those trying to use her 175k salary as an excuse. She's a politician. Her takehome is absolutely way more than that.

Okay but this gets into realms of "I did this", "I knew you'd do that", "I knew you knew I'd do that", "I knew you knew that I knew that you'd do that", etc.

Ultimately this remains on brand for her style, sticks to her ideals, and speaks to those in money at a major show-off event for them. Claiming that it's playing right into the hands of the elites is making a lot of assumptions about the depth of this.
there's nothing to be gained from "showing off" so-called socialist ideals if the principles behind them are just going to be whitewashed and watered down

Right?

MAGAs continuously complain how BLM and antifa burn cities and whatever (they don't) and cry that the left needs to be more peaceful when protesting.

And now they're complaining about what's probably one of the most peaceful way to do so.

God they're extremely stupid

The fact that so many people are talking about this demonstrates that it's had the desired effect. Congresswoman Cortez seeks to normalize and popularize policies that she supports to pressure her colleagues to vote for them.

So what's the answer? Stop being in the public eye? Stop speaking out and being heard? There's a public element to all of this, always has been.

And I'm not saying "this is genius". It's a stunt, absolutely. One of several, including when she went on Twitch to play Among Us.

But pretending like this stunt means she's abandoning ideals (or never having them in the first place) because she showed up to a fancy thing with millions of eyes on it is, I feel, dishonest.

oh I'm sure she does have ideals. the point is that those ideals are safe and defanged to the extent that they will not, cannot meaningfully threaten the status quo -- just as "tax the rich" is a safe, defanged version of "eat the rich"

And are you holding her to account for that? Or the system of elites? Are you suggesting she's lost her street cred and sold out?

Like criminy, enough fun is made of treating AOC like a shiny goddess capable of solving everything. It'd be unwise to unironically feed into that.

Look, I'll say it again, here's my problem...

Part of her responsibilities are "overseeing and supporting the city's culture institutions." She's literally only there to chat up rich donors and get them to donate to the art museum. This dress runs pretty contrary to her only reason for being there. She's supposed to be chatting them up, not turning them off.

This is the difference between being a meme and being an effective politician. And Pelosi has tried to warn her about this stuff in the past. So yeah, AOC is trending on Twitter. But how many people did she get to donate to the museum?

first: it's not clear that "attention" like this actually makes any significant difference to that end. certainly if it does, it's very, very indirect. there's also a strong argument that performative actions like are actually detrimental to the people trying to enact meaningful change

second: it's not clear that this actually brings more attention to those types of policies -- she was already very visible

third: the types of policies she supports will not meaningfully threaten the existing system, which is why it was safe for her to be there in the first place

Well, to be fair, the types of rich people who are opposed to raising taxes probably aren't the types of people she wants to associate with anyway. Plenty of millionaires genuinely support progressive policies, and we shouldn't forget that the real enemies of progressivism are billionaires and their stooges.

This has nothing to do with getting them to support progressive policies. It's gathering money for the art museum.

The "tax the rich" dress is obviously supposed to promote the policy of raising taxes on the ultra wealthy.

people have been talking about taxing the rich for a long time, and it has been a popular policy in the US for over 100 years.

"performance" it was. "activism" it was not

the closest analogy that currently comes to mind is Bagism, which basically amounted to John Lennon and Yoko Ono getting married in a bag so no one would know what they looked like.

it's not activism; it's performance art. (and of course the entire premise was moot to begin with because everyone already knew what they looked like)
