Some of these are weird like overwatch, fortnite, and lol. Games that are very important to gaming overall but like 0 people talk positively about them now. Like I get why they were put in the bracket but the only way they'd get a win is if they faced each other really. Same with WoW but that has much more history to fall back on.

Also random half life alyx. Like this has to be the least played game on the list.

How tf is GoldenEye in the list? There are so many better games than that!

Some of these game choices are nuts, particularly in franchises. Pokemon Yellow, Halo 2, RDR1 over 2 and MKD8 are all just weird. Also, Journey as a #2 seed? Assassin's Creed 4, KotOR and Half-Life Alyx being anywhere near a "best games ever" list at all? Just about the only odder game I'm glad got in is Burnout 3 but I think that's just cause I love driving games.

Some notable matches and differences from GameFAQs contests-

Matchup 2 -Mario Kart 8 would totally dominate San Andreas in a GameFAQ contest
Matchup 4/5 - LoL and Fortnite being this weak even in mainstream website like IGN makes me wonder if the LoL and Fortnite players even visit video game websites at all
Matchup 6 - I literally never heard of the burnout series. Chrono Trigger would probably 80-20 it here
Matchup 10 - I don't know, I believe GoW still wins this, but not in such a landslide like it does in the IGN Contest (77% currently)
Match 17 - This sounds like a very hard match to predict in a GameFAQs contest imo. I have no idea how it would go
Match 18 - MGS3 made it to the finals in 2010 Game of the Decade. I have hard time believing it can lose to the Last of Us
Matchup 26 - Yeah no chance in hell Animal Crossing would lose to Titanfall
Matchup 29 - I know Hades is well liked and popular but being this close to Metroid Prime? would never happen here

It's just an awkward to do it that way. Normally you would put in Pokemon RBY or if Yellow is considered too different the group together just Pokemon Red/Blue.

Well if you are going with popularity it had to be Minecraft, Fortnite or World Of Warcraft. I mean these are the most inluental games on their genres and these are the most known games by the genera population.

But if you go best ever generally well there isn't one because no game is perfect and no genre is loved by everyone.

Right now by playerbase it's Fortnite. But Fortnite itself is not influential in like a gaming sense. It's influence is because of it's popularity. Like WoW is here more for history vs actual popularity now as FFXIV has since surpassed it, but FFXIV doesn't have the history WoW has and that tends to be important.

Apparently the page update was accidental and they took it down. It used to say:

Upsets Galore

Out of 32 total matchups, a whopping 11 ended in upsets, with two 1 seeds (Super Mario World, Super Metroid) going down. The biggest upset in terms of margin of victory came from 12 seed Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, which took 85% of the vote against 5 seed Sid Meier's Civilization IV, a difference of more than 300,000 total votes. The narrowest margin of victory came in the form of 15 seed Rise of the Tomb Raider beating out 2 seed Half Life 2 by only four percentage points, or about 16,000 votes.

Instagram Makes Champions

With nearly 73% of votes coming via Instagram Stories, each game needs a strong performance there to hope to advance. For example, 3 seed Chrono Trigger beat 14 seed Burnout 3: Takedown on every platform but Instagram, which was enough to tilt the scales in favor of the underdog. If you're passionate about a favorite game, make sure you're also voting for it on Instagram to help its chances.

The Round of 32 Is Totally Unpredictable

Just doing a quick look through the results, this doesn't look to be the case in my eyes.

Goldeneye
OoT
Super Mario World
Mario 64
Half Life 2

SMB3

These games all won against younger foes. Goldeneye managed to take out the Call of Duty that made CoD what it is today. San Andreas took out one of the most casually accepted games going at the moment in Mario Kart 8. Super Mario World took out the most recent Smash.

I think the games that have a legacy will do just fine.

You checking the main site? Instagram makes up 73% of the votes and those skew super modern. Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger both lost because of Instagram.

So you basically just want the exact opposite, where anything old is bad and only new stuff is strong, which is what we're going to get here. You haven't fixed the problem. You've just inverted it.

Well its a problem thats impossible to fix on this site. The only new game that would likely stomp all the old shit on this relic is just another LoZ game because nobody here gives enough of a shit about other new games for them to do well

I personally like the change of pace, but people generally don't like "unproven" new stuff beating out the proven classics and that's true for most mediums. If you hold a best movie contest and it's all blockbuster movies released in the past 5-10 years beating out old classics (eg Jurassic World or Wonder Woman winning against Vertigo or the Godfather or something), you'll get a lot of complaints too.

Theres no real way to run these without someone complaining about something. That much is true.

I don't mind new stuff doing well. It's kind of lame when it's all new stuff winning, just how it's kind of lame when it's all old stuff winning.

But there will almost always be some sort of weird imbalance in gaming contests wherever they're held.

More than the new stuff winning is the fact that Instagram is deciding the contest all on its own. Why bother holding polls on three other sites when 75% of the votals come from one?

And no, new games having a major advantage in this format isn't inherently better than GameFAQs just because we're not used to it. Same problem, different colors.
