I won't be able to start the game myself until after work tonight, but I figured I'd make a topic now to let people know True Colors is out.

I'm going into this pretty hyped. All I know about the game is what the first trailer showed me, but it's been getting good reviews. It's almost as highly rated as the original Life is Strange, last I checked. Plus it's made by the people who made Before the Storm, which for me is tied with LiS as the best game ever. Whether anyone in this new game will match the greatness of Chloe remains to be seen, though! I never did get around to playing Life is Strange 2, the concept simply didn't interest me, but True Colors looks a lot closer to the original in spirit.

Anyway, I'd be interested in comments if anyone else goes through this right away like I plan to.

I finished chapter three, but I won't post any spoilers or anything, just general feelings so far. I'm enjoying True Colors quite a bit! It definitely has the essence of a Life is Strange game, lots of wandering around looking at things, moments to sit quietly and ponder, a neat supernatural power that they're using well, and so on. I'm taking my time with it and there's lots of little things to discover. For the most part the characters are interesting and well written. No one is up to the level of Max/Chloe/Rachel but that was always an unrealistic bar for any game to clear. Alex is still pretty great.

I have a few nit-picks, but that would be true of any video game. The pros more than outweigh the cons. Unless this flubs the later parts of the game super hard somehow (which, uh, LiS has arguably done twice before), I'd say it's a worthy entrant into the franchise.

I played game 1. I heard 2 was kinda bad and I honestly wasn't too interested since it was about completely different characters. Not sure where I stand on True Colors, but I've heard it's significantly better than 2.

I never finished game 1 - it couldn't really hold my interest. (I think I was at the start of ep 3. Maybe it picks up before the end?) I thought 2 was significantly better. Fugitives on the run is just a much more interesting scenario than high school drama and small-town life.

Im planning to play it tomorrow. I bought the version that comes with LiS and BtS remastered, so if I like this, Ive got those to look forward to next year as I never played them.

I've heard good things about it but I'm a little confused about the pricing. Weren't LiS 1 and 2 about $30 for the season when they came out? Is this one that significantly bigger?

Reviews have it at about 10-15 hours to beat, so about the same in that regard. Guess its just a higher production value? Or maybe theres lots of branching stuff you cant see in a single playthrough?

My physical copy arrived today, excited to play it tonight.

Kinda bummed that they only had the standard edition for the physical copies so I'll need to upgrade to the deluxe edition separately, but I guess it's just a couple bucks.

I'm sorry I haven't played LiS2 now because I can't offer any comment to the posts that mention it. I just heard from LiS fans that it was worse, and I already wasn't as interested because a key part of LiS for me was getting to know the same people and locations whereas LiS2 was about being on the run and always finding new people at new places. Didn't feel like there was much room to build anything.

I'm not at the end yet and I haven't played twice to test branching paths so I can't definitively state how big the game is, but here's my view on it. It doesn't feel much bigger than LiS or BtS, but there's a lot of little things packed into what is there. One negative review I saw on Steam (which I only read a tiny bit into to avoid risking spoilers) whined about the game only being seven hours long. I'm at seven hours already just by the end of chapter three. The original LiS could probably be speedrun in an hour or two if you avoided everything except what moved the plot forward, but to me Life is Strange's greatness was in the little moments and side conversations. I'm going slow to soak in the atmosphere, and True Colors has a lot of atmosphere! Whether that atmosphere is enough to justify the full price, I guess that's an individual choice. I'm obviously a LiS superfan so I would've paid this price for the original and BtS both without feeling ripped off.

I have now beaten True Colors. No spoilers in this post either though, need to gather my thoughts first (and have other people beat the game so I can chat with them about it!)

I will say though, this game was worthy of the Life is Strange name. I enjoyed it a lot. It never reached the dizzying highs of Life is Strange or Before the Storm, but True Colors also never sunk to the lows they sometimes reached. I felt it was a very consistent experience with a lot to enjoy in every encounter and every room.

I haven't seen every potential secret yet and I didn't listen to everything on the jukebox, but I'm a nerd so the first thing I did after beating the game was check its TVTropes page. The Wild Mass Guessing tab contained a pre-release guess that this song would be in the game, and the text below it added post-release said that the song sadly wasn't in it.

As someone who thinks LiS1 is a top ten game of its decade, thinks LiS:BtS is highly overrated due to losing mechanics that distinguish it from games like The Walking Dead, and thinks LiS2 fell flat but had some admirable goals mechanically...

...help me out here please: what's True Colors looking to do for me? I don't want to keep buying into the series if it's more like BtS and 2 than 1.

Aside from the lack of the sci-fi aspects of the time travel, I thought BTS was better than the original mostly because it didn't have some wishy-washy dishrag of a protagonist.

I suppose this is where I get tripped up because, to me at least, LiS was never differentiated by the time mechanics. I'm probably sounding like a broken record at this point, but it was the atmosphere, taking things slow, etc, that made it unique next to other choice-based adventure games. BtS had that LiS atmosphere in spades, along with the greatest fictional character ever as lead! Chloe had sass, she didn't need no time powers. (Please forgive me for fanboying out)

As for you and True Colors, the empathy power definitely doesn't pack the same punch as the time power did. I mean, I enjoyed the empathy and thought it was handled well, but emotions just fundamentally can't be integrated into gameplay like time powers can be. If that's your primary draw to LiS, I'd at least wait for the game to get a bit cheaper

Played up until the end of the main event in Chapter 3. Enjoying it so far! I'm streaming it, which means I gotta wait until next Saturday to finish it, which is a bummer as I really wanna find out how it ends. Chapter 3 especially so far has been a lot of fun. I've also been going super slow, each chapter has taken me three hours so far. I've been checking everything, talking to everyone, etc.

I'll be interested to see exactly how much variation there is when I'm done though, as it doesn't feel like the choices I've made so far would have affected the flow of events too hugely.

The DLC costumes were a bit of a let-down too. I was expecting completely new sets of clothes, but they're just different skins for each chapter. Using them since I got them, but I wouldn't feel too bad if I didn't have them either.

Also I'm weirdly terrible at finding memories. Like, I just keep missing them. I've only found three so far, I think.

Beat the game last night, was pretty good. I think I would rank the series as LIS > TC > BtS > LIS2. LIS had some higher highs but True Colors was pretty solid as well. I liked how they tried to keep the story a bit simpler, my main criticism of LIS2 is that they tried to do too much so have a smaller story meant everything felt a bit tighter.

It was a bit annoying though since at the end the Chapter 5 trophy and Platinum popped on screen but it didn't register in my trophy list. I have the screenshots and everything but I'm still at 98%. Apparently others have this issue as well. I hope I'm not actually locked out of it.

It feels a bit too expensive for me as a full priced game. Not because it's not good, but rather because it's really short (I beat the game in under 9 hours). I don't regret buying it for full price, but if you're not fully sold on the direction the series is taking then maybe wait for it to drop.

I see. I'm a diehard stan of the original season but that only cost like $30 and was 15 hours long. While I want to support the series and midrange development in general, $60 kind of feels like Square trying to see what they can get away with and I'm not down with that.

Between that and the technical issues, this is probably a Black Friday pickup for me.

If I set my Life is Strange fanboyism aside, I agree this probably isn't worth full price. It took me about ten hours.

Anyway, I'm watching my brother play through the game now, so basically replaying it and seeing what choices impact. I'll gather my thoughts and hopefully post something more substantial this weekend

Finished it earlier today. Final playtime about 13 hours.

Spoiler-free synopsis: Enjoyed it a lot! I haven't played any other LiS games to compare, but I felt like all of the characters, even the ones you were supposed to dislike, felt very 'real' with believable flaws and depth. Not a single character from the main cast felt like a caricature. I called one part of the ending very early on, but another part was still a pleasant surprise.

My only real complaint is, after finishing the game, looking up what I could have done differently and, well, I don't have any desire to replay it anytime soon, let's put it that way.

Oh and Alex's internal monologue at times was annoying, but she was otherwise an interesting character to play as.

It's finally time for me to try and put some thoughts into words! Spoilers for True Colors

Episode One was a great introduction to Alex, the supporting cast, and to Haven. Gabe in particular needed to shine in order to sell the impact of losing him, and I thought they managed that well through his interactions with Alex. I also really felt for Alex when she sadly sang that song after losing control of her emotions, it really solidified the fact that she wasn't sure of her place there yet.

Episode Two handled the mourning for Gabe well, again everyone had a little moment. My one complaint here was that a lot of it seemed like Alex reacting to the feelings of others rather than feeling anything herself. Still, she hadnt seen Gabe in years, maybe it makes sense that the people he'd built a life with would be harder hit.

Episode Three was the LARP, which from what I've read elsewhere seemed divisive. Lots of people thought it was cringy, but I loved it! One of the big themes of the game was loss and this dealt with that for Ethan. I loved the end where Alex got to see the fantasy world as Ethan did, and his breakdown after the siren hit me hard.

Episode Four was the party, and I romanced Steph. I enjoyed their relationship well enough. This ep dealt a lot with the conspiracy too, which I also thought the game handled well. It was a fairly realistic situation in a lot of ways, just a shady corporate coverup, but it managed a lot of intrigue along the way. I saw the Jed twist coming a mile away but it still impacted me when it happened.

Episode Five fleshed out Alex's backstory, which I appreciated. As for the council vote ending, I have some qualms. I lucked into the golden full support ending, which was satisfying, but I've since seen other variations and I think they would really ruin the climax the first time through. Why is taking Pike's fear good but taking Charlotte's anger ruins the ending? Still, the empath showdown with Jed was good and I liked being able to leave Haven to go adventuring with Steph.

Overall, True Colors was a solid story about loss and belonging. None of the choices really mattered, but at this point you kind of have to expect that from games like this. Far more important for me was that it had all the little LiS trademarks like sitting on a dock and just thinking about things for a minute. TC was a worthy LiS game

I chose to stay as well. It made sense to me because Alex didn't really have any dreams of travelling the world or seeking adventure, she just wanted to find a home where she could be her, and the future Gabe painted of her life in Haven looked like everything she wanted.
