So I just watched it and like...damn.

Season hasn't always been the best, with a few episodes in the middle that are definitely below average for the show, but they nailed it with the last 3. Maybe the finale was paced a bit too fast with all the stuff being dumped there but it was very compelling, and had a terrific ending.

I definitely enjoyed it, even though I feel like they wont wind up referencing anything that happened for most of the next season.

Does anyone happen to know what song they were playing during the Rick backstory reveal? I really liked it and couldnt find out anything about it, so I guess it was made for the show?

Maybe not, but he was out of portal fluid at least? They took a beating there.

It was good enough. I like the concept of the citadel and it's usually interesting, but I find that citadel episodes often lack significant humor (though in the case of season 5, that's probably a good thing), and the show itself even makes fun of fans who like those episodes the most. Having one or so a season is fine.

This one was probably the weakest of any of the citadel episodes, because it did a ton of recapping of things we already knew, just so the main Rick & Morty could be caught up. But that still puts it in the top half of season 5 episodes.

I really liked the last 2 episodes. The season in general was pretty great even though I know some felt it was a big step below what we usually get.

My biggest issue with the finale (and honestly the bird person episode before it as well) is Im a casual Rick and Monty fan and I was pretty lost. I havent seen any episode more than once other than my absolute favorites so I couldnt remember at all what the significance of some of the things were.

I was sitting there in the finale vaguely recalling why evil Morty existed and being generally confused as I hadnt seen what was being referenced for years now.

So can someone explain Rick's backstory to me? I know in the season 3 premiere we got the dead wife/daughter revelation that was played off as a fake memory to escape, but now that it's real, does that mean Rick actually cloned Beth? It's the only explanation I can understand because both Rick and Morty were referred to being from the C-137 dimension (which obviously got Cronenberged).

Maybe, but it would take away the significance of the season 4 finale where it shows that there is a cloned Beth and an original Beth, and Rick rewatches the memory where he randomizes who is who. That would have no impact if they were both clones, or even if one of them was from another dimension...because why would he be attached one over the other in that scenario.

Could just be the writers fucked up in season 5, and they'll find a way to correct it later.

Also didn't Evil Rick scan Rick's memories and find ones of him holding a baby Morty?

Based on the backstory it means the Rick weve known since the start left his own universe and moved in with a family whose Rick was either dead or abandoned them. The main Ricks own wife and daughter died quite early in his life meaning he never had an adult Beth or a Morty from his own universe. With all the crazy shit that goes on its probably safest to assume theyre all from different places and not actually the original family anymore.
