alright let me actually finish and post this

There's a strangely nostalgic and compelling facet to this sound. It reminds me of my friends playing Psychostick and One Finger Death Punch back in early high school, and a lot of the goofiness is reminiscent of System of a Down's first album (listen to Suggestions, for example... oh, they apparently covered Chop Suey. That tracks). It makes the guitar tone pretty easy to acclimate to. You don't need to worry about the singing either; I wouldn't call this "growling", it's more like "guttural vocals", which is not a synonym, at least in my mind.

1:30 in Row is pretty solid

what the christ is magic spider

alestorm collab with Killing Time and Space?

You'll note that that I don't have a lot to say on specific songs. That's partially fatigue and partially that I forgot that I was listening to an album I was supposed to be ranking the second time, which is a pretty good sign. Consider that a victory, that it was overall enjoyable enough that the fact it was supposed to be a "job" was lost on me when I forgot myself. So, you get less writeups and sure knowledge that I did, in spite of your expectations, enjoy this. I will say that it was not as funny as I was expecting; it was amusing rather than "ha-ha", though there were some bits in Killing Time and Space, and Goblins that got me. Whatever videos they have would probably help with that.

Haste, when half the videos in a playlist are from 2008 and there other half are fucking video recordings of a record player playing the song, maybe you should find a better upload for me. This is the first time this ranking where I had to seek out a different upload because christ, man

I'm listening to too late on the first pass to have many comments, but I do have to mention now that Thousand Island Park is really doing it for me, particularly the midpoint. The way the piano is interacting with the guitar (which is doing a certain melancholic thing I recently discovered I love) is cool as hell, and is something I don't think I've heard the like of before.

One word: drum solo. Wait. Fuck.

I actually thought I had switched to the Allman Brothers or something when Open Country Joy came on. The opening was the best part, honestly. Kind of lost the thread with both genres when the song picked up.

I'm really struggling to write comments on the albums I like a lot compared to the albums I like less. I listened to this a ton over the last week but never felt motivated to write anything. I liked it a lot. I knew I'd like it a lot. You knew I'd like it a lot. This isn't diminishing my appreciation of the album or the nom or anything, I just feel bad that I don't have too much to say here. If asked to do an individual song analysis I'd have an easier time.

Favorite song; Thousand Island Park
Score: did you even need me to tell you/10

@ZaziGuado

I have to hand it to the nominators. There's a lot of variety in these albums, and I never know what I'm going to get before listening. Of all of the strange intros I've gotten (which has been like every album), starting with the Major Tom orchestral indie piece was probably the most effective. Really got me excited for the album in a way I doubt any other plausible song would've.

Of course, I didn't like the songs that weren't in that style nearly as much, though I'm more merciful on them than I probably would've been had the first song not put me in a good mood. The album has a pretty archetypical indie pop feel, so right away this was a *risky* pick. I found that the most typical the instrumentation a given song here had, the less I liked it (with the exception of Exploding People, which had the rough handicap of the autotune in the variety I hate the most). I definitely felt my patience wearing thin by song 4 until it started ticking up again.

I think I'll say that this was "Owl City but approaching some value of 'good'". A lot of it was way too happy (or, more [and less] precisely, "happy-feeling") for me, which is just... blech. Blech is the word for those tracks. Others, like Forces of the Unseen, I liked better for not being so peppy and having neat instrumentation choices like the cello. I think I can say I genuinely liked that and a couple others, ~7/10 tier.

One thing I have to mention about this genre in general is that emotionally, it's a complete miss. It's too... straightfoward is the wrong word but it's the best one I'm coming up with. It's... I can't think of how to describe it without sounding condescending. It's too "show > tell". It's too "I am telling you how to feel so this is how you should feel". It's too "look how relateable this is". I want to stress that these aren't any kind of "objective" statements, just observations on what it feels like to me. Cheesiness can be alright, but this goes way too far. In terms of conveying emotions with songs I don't have prior associations with, I *strongly* value more nuanced compositional storytelling, and will generally consider lyrics only after I've already formed a connection, as I think I've mentioned in another writeup somewhere. The Venn diagram of emotional beats between this and, like, Kimera II is the null set. The closest song I can think of that succeeds to me is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCENN-Zm3R0, which is quite obviously pretty different. The album depends pretty strongly on feels, so it has an inherent handicap.

Some individual song notes:

The Exploding People, SOMEHOW, would fit perfectly as a goblin track with just a Ctrl-H of "people" to "goblin".

Call of the Wild was probably my least favorite movie I've ever seen.

Responsible is the specific song that led to my emotions rant, as you may have guessed.

When Dawn started, I 100% thought I somehow was listening to Dead Man's Gun from RDR.

The album was exactly as long as my preparation for dinner, so that was convenient (it finished fading out just as I took the food out of the oven and put it down). I rolled my eyes at a lot of this and wished for a few of the songs to end faster, but I can't say I hated it. Honestly, that might be a bigger accomplishment than Nujabes or Kali Uchis scoring high, since, if you saw my VGM ranking and Johnbobb's average placement, you'll know that any kind of music that can be described as "indie" scoring above "I made it through the song" is remarkable.

Favorite song: Unexplainable Stories
Score: I usually wasn't yearning to mute it/10

I'm glad you didn't hate it! Light Chasers is an important album for me because I discovered it, as well as the band, during a vulnerable time in my life, so it makes sense that the heavy push for emotion appealed to me. It was also designed to be a concept album and those can be a tad hamfisted. The lead singer, who does most of the writing, definitely prefers to get lost in topics dealing with some sort of existentialism. Sometimes it's an emphasis on positivity and optimism and sometimes it's an emphasis on searching for meaning.

I can 100% understand how someone can come away with the opinions you did regarding the pursuit of emotion and the "indie spirit" or whatever we want to refer to it as. The band's studio is a literal cabin in the woods, so they are all about being wrapped up in it. I'll take your takeaway as a win.

Thanks for your thoughts!

holy shit what am I listening to? I guess I need to truly return to ape to appreciate what's going on here. I can say I certainly don't hate it. When I saw that you nominated something I was praying that it wouldn't be like your vgm nominations, and I'm definitely not disappointed in that respect!

I'm hitting a similar wall with these songs that I did with some of Mycro's and jangler's vgm noms; I respect weird music, yet at a certain point, if it's *out there* enough, I have trouble viscerally accepting it as music and all and it becomes kind of there. I think that's especially potent here, with how different every song is and how little the album flows. By the time I've started getting the hang of a song, we're off somewhere completely different.

wait this is apparently for a musical?? what the fuck? and it's by Gorillaz people ok that part makes sense. i think the added context of the play would help a lot with this.

gotta admire the clipping

Those are some basic fucking trap hi-hat/kick patterns in Reverse Engineering

...yeah I don't think I have much aside from ultimately meaningless faint praise or rebukes

YO WHAT THIS HAS A SONG CALLED ARCHEOPTERYX. The album I referenced earlier is by "Cryptovolans", which is another ancient (and much cooler, sorry) bird-like dinosaur.

If you were paying attention to the topic, you could probably guess about what my thoughts on this would be. It's fairly firmly in the "good but ultimately forgettable bar music" tier that Beale Street is hanging out. It's definitely good, and I certainly don't *mind* listening to this... yes, you guessed it, it's *pleasant*. It's got no edge, it doesn't feel--and I can't believe I'm about to use this phrase--challenging to listen to. To put it less stupidly, it doesn't surprise me or take me places I haven't been before or even make me feel a little uncomfortable in listening something I'm not accustomed to. It's exceptional background music, and does, against all odds, get me into the lively mood it's setting. So... bar music.

Yeah I can tell immediately that this one is gonna be a hard sell.

I'm making a concerted effort to not be harsh in this topic (and truth be told, I don't feel harsh towards this album), so it might be opaque exactly how I feel about albums I'm not super into, and how such compare to its contemporaries in its tier. I think the most telling thing I can say is that, unlike most of the "iffy" songs that placed above it, this isn't something I'd *want* to listen to again, even in the right context. I don't not want to either. It's perfectly in the liminal zone of not doing enough things I dislike to at least make it interesting, and not doing enough things I like to make me like it. Unlike Weirdest Hits, which I just said was something that I had trouble making myself go through again, I do have actual reticience beyond "I have other things I want to listen to more" holding me back, but not to the extent I would go out of my way to avoid hearing it in another context. In my headcannon Bitter Suite IV is about Nyarlathotep

In an all-too-important sense, it's a good thing that this topic is taking so long, because if it wasn't, you'd all be beyond done with how often I use the word "indie" to describe things (but at least I'm not overusing "alternative"). This album has a lot of different takes on genres, and to be concise, the unifying feel to the tracks is that they feel... indie. I have to give it to the album, it really did a good job getting me into it and selling me on that kind of sound, and here, unlike most or all of the other """"indie"""" albums I listened to, this quasi-perjorative label gradually faded to inconsequentiality as the album progressed. I didn't like Waves because of it, but by The Line it felt natural, even if in isolation I'd probably dislike that one a fair amount. Really, in general the album did a superb job of sampling different styles while making them feel its own. The tracks had a consistency that *felt* like a deliberate stylistic decision rather than a crutch which could be the result of a similar album done by a less competent group, and there was a good amount of creativity even outside of the variety you'd expect from an eclectic group of styles. Even Squeaky Wheel has little bits of dissonance that make it a lot more interesting than comparable songs. I'm fairly confident that this is near the zenith of albums in its vague sphere of genre.
