What is Final Fantasy XIV? It's an MMORPG in the long and storied Final Fantasy series!

Do I need to play any of the previous FFs? Nope! Aside from some references and homages, FFXIV is a standalone game and story in its own world called Eorzea!

What can I do in Eorzea? Lots of things! You can hunt monsters, mine ores and minerals, or harvest plants, you can fish, race chocobos, play card games, gamble your life away in the casino, raid, delve dungeons for loot and gold. The list goes on!

Sounds fun! What's the catch? Yes, it's true, FFXIV is a paid subscription game. $12.99 a month minimum.

I don't know... is there a free trial? Absolutely! https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/ Last year they updated the free trial to include all of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward. Yes, really! You can play 2 entire games, completely free, at no cost, no time limit! Every quest, class, dungeon, raid, everything between 2.0 and 3.55, completely free! Forever! Only catch is social features are limited, no FCs, no tells, no friends. And spending any money at all on the game will immediately end your free trial.

You said something about raiding and fighting monsters? FFXIV follows the "trinity" school of design for MMOs. There are broadly three roles, Tank, Damage(DPS) and Healer. And under these there are currently 17 Job classes to play as. I hear everything is locked behind the story? Yes, absolutely everything in this game requires you to follow the story, or MSQ. And over the years the MSQ has expanded and expanded and expanded. There are hundreds and hundreds of quests to get through at this point. And every 3-4 months they add even more. But if story isn't your thing, you can purchase level and story skips in the game's real money store, the mogstation. Though personally I like the story, especially later on in Heavensward and Shadowbringers and the journey is really something to experience, so I would not recommend doing so.

Shadowbringers has concluded its story content, and now players are eagerly awaiting the Endwalker expansion coming out this November. The expansion promises to bring 2 new classes, a melee DPS called Reaper, and a healer called Sage! Along with that, Endwalker is going to conclude the story set up in A Realm Reborn, and with that a brand new story will begin in 6.1. There will also be a new 8-man raid called Pandaemonium, and a 24-man raid about The Twelve. Viera are getting a male variant, belts are being removed and inventory slots are being redistributed, and stats are going to be squished, but everything will be balanced in a way so you shouldn't notice much of a difference in difficulty of old content. There's also going to be a personal farm zone. Yes, something akin to Stardew Valley is coming to FFXIV! It's an exciting time to get into the game, so what are you waiting?

Here's me! I've done all the raid content I want and all of that good stuff, so until Endwalker I'm trying to fill out my Mount collection! So I stepped back into Zadnor this morning to work on the Resistance mounts. Didn't really make much progress in that regard, but I'll have more time tomorrow to really dive deep into that. Also, according to FFXIV Collect, I'm ranked 903 in the world for mounts collected. >_>

Just popped into my head for some reason, and now I'm curious.

So there's 8 data centers, soon to be 9. 3 in Japan, 3 in NA, 2 in Europe and 1 coming to Oceania next year.
The data centers are:
Japan: Elemental, Gaia and Mana
NA: Aether, Crystal and Primal
Europe: Light and Chaos

And each data center has multiple servers, and every server can play with anybody in the same data center. And servers are named after all sorts of things. Monsters. Characters from past FF games. Weapons. Spells. Etc.
So like I play on the Gilgamesh server in the Aether data center. Other servers in Aether include Faerie, Cactuar, Adamantoise, Jenova, Midgardsormr, Sargatanas and Siren. But other servers in other data centers have names like Moogle, Balmung, Mateus, Malboro, Excalibur, Exodus, etc. etc.
So, yes they name them like that, but they also pull names from other sources too.

Played for the first time since like 2014 and finished up the ARR campaign. While the ending of that story arc was nice, I like to play non-DPS roles (aka healer) and apparently healing is basically DPS in this game so I'm leaning towards not playing. I don't think I will get any fulfillment out of this game.

I played like a year ago to level ~12

-At what point does the story get "good". As best I can remember I was just running around a city and then killing small animals for hours last time. Felt like a very dated setup.
-How much control do you have over your armour appearance, or how much is tied to class or stats.

Probably gonna end up dropping it again but it's not like I have anything better to do with my time.

It had good points around 28, 32, 43, 49, and early 50 while following so many jrpg and mmo tropes. Then around 2.4 when you fight Shiva, things take a turn for the better. Most people don't really notice how much better it gets until a certain banquet. Then comes HW and the story is mostly good beyond that point.

At level 15 you unlock glamour. There are some class or role limitations for certain sets and pieces, but there's also a ton of stuff you can wear that isn't locked behind your class/job or level. It used to be unlocked at 50, but SE realized at some point in late HW or early StB people want to partake in the true endgame asap. So it's from a question at 15.

Spent ALL day in Zadnor. Got 6 Field Notes! Still need 9 more. 3 in Zadnor, 3 in Delubrum Reginae, and 3 in Bozja. And while I'm working on this I'm also having a chance at getting other mounts, and also getting prepared for DR Savage!

I'm doing the kraken club BC in FFXI on and off out of boredom and trying to get the club obviously, 0/278 so far, ha!

Played this for a little bit and figure the game still wasn't for me. I did not get any joy out of it but I'm no longer going to criticize people for playing it as I can see why they do.

Yeah I totally understand why somebody wouldn't like the game. First time I tried it I wasn't super into it, but I picked it back up in Heavensward and then it clicked for me.

Been trying to get absorbed into FF14, so far no success.

Had the base game bought back long ago, played the beta and at some point I think I got the base game off a humble bundle or something. With all the FF14 talk I dusted it off, upgraded and jumped in. been playing a couple weeks.

None of the classes feel good to me, I can't find any class that is real fun, actually distinct, sure the effects are all different in appearance but they all just become this overly messy light show. The few classes...excuse me jobs... I'm actually interested in are locked behind a level grind forcing you to play a class you don't want to get to them. I shouldn't have to play 50-60 levels of a class I don't like. This is not "fun". Classes are completely function locked, no different builds your job is set in stone what you are (tank healer dps). Basically trying to create your "fantasy" is much harder if not impossible in FF14 than it is in WoW. You are far more limited and pigeon holed in this game. The storylines seem ok, but they mostly do it in with the in game engine and they do to much slow movement and posing making these scenes take so twice as long as they need to. As someone that typically loves story in my games I find my self cursing at the screen to hurry the fuck up.

I also dusted off another MMO I had from ages past. Lord of the Rings Online (lotro) and been playing that and the visuals and animations are pretty dated (though still pretty in their own right) but besides that, its quite immersive. Its attention to detail with the lore to the books is staggering, so much content. You can live and breath Middle Earth. Lotro is kicking FF14s ass for me and I'm probably at this rate going to let my FF14 sub end and just go Lotro until either a new MMO comes out thats got that something special or Blizzard gets their shit together and fixes WoW. FF14 isn't turning out as good as all the recent hype would indicate.

Congrats! In my experience Hades' mount drops pretty frequently these days. At least when I did the farm for my mount, it dropped 5 times in like 7 runs.

The Rising is on, I was planning on *maybe* buying a mount or something during the sale, but I got super lucky and managed to snag a PS5 in a restock this week, so I think I'll hold off on spending more money for the time. Also they disabled buying gift codes on discounted items due to "fraudulent activity". Uh... okay....

Also, during the Live Letter, Yoshi said in 6.0 they are buffing Cape Westwind. So, Rhitahtyn's Revenge is coming. :0
