https://www.businessinsider.com/65-percent-americans-take-pay-cuts-work- remotely-full-time-2021-8

To work from home full-time, they'd be willing to make some serious sacrifices, according to a recent survey from insurance company Breeze. The survey included 1,000 American adults who were either employed at a job or looking for one that could be performed completely remotely.
Of the respondents, 65% said they'd be willing to take a 5% pay cut in order to have the option to work remotely full-time. Some remained unfazed with the prospect of an even larger pay cut, with one in seven saying they'd give up 25% of their salaries to be able to work from home forever.
On average, around 45% would trade some kind of insurance benefits, such as vision, dental, or health insurance, for full-time remote work.
The surveyed Americans also said they'd be willing to clock more time at work if they could do it from home.
Fifty-three percent of them said they'd put in an extra 10 hours every week at the office if the office was their home. Nearly half of them said they'd concede 25% of their paid time off in exchange for a full-time remote work option. One in seven said they'd give up all of their PTO for remote work.
Some even showed willingness to give up some technology and even their voting rights to be able to work fully remotely.
Breeze found that just over half of the surveyed people would be willing to go without Netflix

I mean if I worked from home it would mean:
Less clothes, and work clothes can be expensive
Less wear on your car if you drive (or less money spent if you take a bus or something)
Less gas in your car
People will be less sick which SHOULD (but probably actually won't) lower health care costs

Absolutely. It's a net gain between time lost to commute and expenses to car wear/tear/gasoline

nah, you don't want them to pay for it, just maybe give you stipends or something. once they pay for your internet, then they theoretically can control it

Zero chance the cons outweigh the pros though.

On average, keeping the light/heat on during the day won't outweigh the money saved on commuting.

My wife has been working from home since March of 2020, and the money we have saved on her not having to do her 20 mile commute has been pretty sizeable.

Even the simple things as going from filling up her gas tank once every 5 days vs now doing it once every 3-4 weeks.

I do pay 300 bucks a month for my train ticket/parking. The only thing the company does for that unless you live out of state is to allow you to pay for commuting before taxes. So might save money depending on the cut.

People shouldn't take a pay cut for it, though. Companies can save a ton of money by having people work from home in the first place, they don't need to be cutting anyone's pay.

Yeah mine is roughly 58 miles. And it's brutal. I spend 500+ on gas alone each month not to mention wear and tear on my car and a 10 hour day becoming 12.50-13. Heck if I got a remote job I might even consider a 15% cut because at least I'd be home with my family in case anything happens.

It may be dependent on vehicles, location, and commute distance.

It's really infuriating when management can't see past its own fucking nose to understand this.

I deal with a lot of companies and learn about their processes and practises. There is absolutely no correlation between the successful companies and whether they force their employees to come in or not. And yet so many of these companies are absolutely hellbent on making everyone return to the office as soon as possible.

What I notice is that this style of management is really ultra obsessed with busy work. Not effective work, or results. or return on investment - just the notion of being busy. Their KPIs are around time and attendance, spreadsheets, emails and phone calls, and yet when you ask them a metric like "but what's your cost per X" they literally can't tell you.

They all fucking KNOW that their employees are only really effective 20% of the time, but they still want to drive their employees into being unhappy for the remaining 80%.

It's unreal. Some people would rather drive off their best staff than admit that "bums on seats" is an awful way to gauge productivity.

It's not coincidence that the only people I've ever met who love the office all happen to be bullshitters. They are never the best workers, they are the best talkers who are experts in the art of dragging a 5 minute conversation into a 45 minute conversation. Calling meetings that should have been emails. They are pushing back hard against WFH partly because they are social butterfly personality types, and partly because they'll be exposed for lack of production.

Corporations need to face it that their offices are noisy, distracting, inefficient, and uncomfortable. The good employees have had enough.

This has been my observation too. I occasionally have to go in to process paperwork and there's this boomer in a different department who had to make a point to complain to me when I was in the break room about how he just couldn't work from home because he's too social and begged management to have a couple others in his department be there too

The funny thing is I AM one of those people, but I hate the office and I've realised that instead of just pretending to be busy all damn day for the sake of looking important I can just do some effective tasks each day and hit every important milestone that matters.

Seriously. I make a few calls, organise some things, do some presentations, have some short meetings - that's a week's work. 4-5 hours of the day is total bullshit. does anyone actually care? No. Do they still get pissy about whether I turn up at 9am every day? Yes, but not really for any important reason they can adequately explain.

I've tested this recently by negotiating 2 days a week that I WFH and get on with my own work. Does anyone actually care what I do? Nope. Took 3 hours off this morning to go to the gym. Did I still do all the important bits of work that means I'm an asset to the company? Absolutely. Does the flexibility to work on my own time and be given freedom and autonomy to do the tasks that are important keep me at the job and satisfied? 100%. And yet, despite all the evidence, my line manager still insists that bums must be on seats...

God, the rat race really sets my fuse off...
