About half of U.S. states withdrew federal funds for the unemployed months early to encourage out-of-work residents to find a job. But mounting evidence shows that policy gambit hasnt yet paid off.

Twenty-six states announced their intent to end federal pandemic-era benefits starting in May. They officially pulled out in waves over June and July.

UKG, a payroll and time-management firm, found that shifts among hourly workers in those states grew at about half the rate as states that continued the benefit the opposite trend of what one might expect.

Specifically, in states that ended benefits, shifts grew 2.2% from May through July; they grew 4.1% in the others that kept federal aid intact, according to UKGs analysis.

Unemployment benefits were not the thing holding people back from going to work, according to Dave Gilbertson, a vice president at UKG. There are other elements out there, particularly in their personal lives, making it really difficult to go back to work.

It doesnt appear differences in state economies or labor markets influenced the dichotomy, since both groups were growing at similar rates earlier this year, Gilbertson said.

Similarly, employment fell 0.9% in states that ended federal benefits between mid-June and mid-July, but rose 2.3% in states that kept them, according to data published this week by Homebase, another payroll and time-management firm.

I still havent found anything to corroborate my hypothesis that the real labor shortage comes from people who used to work 2 or 3 of these retail/service jobs to make ends meet now just working one

Hmmm.

615,000 dead, incl. 270,000 people under age 75.
32,400,000 infections. I can't find national statistics by age, but California reports over 80% of cases in people aged 18-69. I'll go with 80%.
Somewhere between 20%-35% long haul symptoms of varying severity, regardless of age or comorbidities. Let's conservatively assume 25% rate, of which 10% are serious.

(32400000 - 615000) * 0.8 * 0.25 * 0.1 = 1270000 + 270000 = at least 1.54 million people directly removed from the workforce by covid, and could easily be millions more if serious long haul symptoms are more prevalent. There will also be significant indirect impact on potential workers who have instead assumed caretaker duties for impacted family. Among working people, white collar workers are less likely to be impacted due to lower exposure, since these jobs are easier to perform from home.

Yeah, I'm not surprised the service industries can't find enough workers.

Also the unemployment rates are back to what they were before the pandemic hit the US

You're missing the piece that the virus is still raging and a lot of those jobs are high traffic ones where the person is risking themselves

If anything, this proves the stupid generalization Republicans had at the beginning about people not working simply because they were making more money on unemployment was false. People aren't working because they don't feel safe working.

Now I'm curious how the job markets look in places that are blue/red orvthe sentiment towards the virus is different

Or maybe the perceived outlook across the country isnt all the different and everyone's still sheltering. That could be a thing

Well, to the extent that benefits were largely cut by Republican state governments, this data is a reasonable proxy for that

Thousands of dollars in free money every month and not having to pay your bills for over a year tends to have that effect
