There's nothing especially bad about it, but there's also not much that's actively good about it. Though I do like Sheik, and also seeing (OoT spoilers I guess??) the fallout of the Door of Time stuff through the second half of the game is sometimes cool.

It's not anything groundbreaking, but it does some things well enough to get points.

Now I'm curious what a good Ganon portrayal is worth, so I'll nominate The Wind Waker

Heartily embraces its fantasy roots, a simple hero's tale told a million times but infused with enough charm, passion, and a tinge of darkness that makes approaching the story still feel fresh and engaging enough to want to see it through to the end.

I've definitely come to like this one more as I've gotten older. I actually disagree with what some others have said -- OoT's story is significantly more interesting than the standard Zelda fare. I hesitate to say it's the best story in the series, but I'm not sure what I'd put above it. That being said, OoT's story suffers the most of any of them from Link just not being a very good character. Drop a more emotive Link from e.g. WW or BotW into OoT and you fix the biggest problem it's got.

Putting this on day 64 was a cute touch~

Well told, charming, and meaningful. Excellent worldbuilding, vivid characters, epic scope, and a great variety of tones and emotions. I could go on.

Only serious drawback is Link being mute.

This video especially helped me appreciate the storyline:

If I had to rank OoT's story in the series, it would be somewhere in the middle. And honestly even the best Zelda stories like Wind Waker and Skyward Sword wouldn't get more than a 7-7.5 from me.

If Ocarina of Time were any other game, people would shit all over its story. It has a few good set pieces, like the moment when you leave Saria behind in the woods, but for every one of those there's some serious 90's jank and stupid gimmickry, and there's absolutely nothing remarkable about the story or the writing. High School Me was taken with what passed for worldbuilding at the time, but I've seen some runs of the game in more recent times and smirk at how much our standards have changed since. Sorry, but no, for a story-based game, it gets below average at best.

Zelda's never been a story based game though. Maybe the later ones, but it's puzzles > combat/item management > story to me.

So I can understand the franchise being lackluster in this specific case.

There's way too much dialogue in OoT to say it isn't a story-based game. Maybe it's not core to the gameplay, but the game's whole concept -- playing young Link and then an older version -- is derived from the story.

Playing as Young Link blows as much as the early slow as molasses section of Twilight Princess, especially on replays. Water Temple ironically has become much more tolerable on replays.

Like FFIV, you really have to consider historical context when evaluating this game's story. Even then though, I think the game has a lot going for it in terms of characterizing its world/side characters (people like Dampe, Malon, Saria etc.)

I agree with the 8s. I like the story origins on Ganondorf's rise as the demon king, the seven-year slumber of the Hero of Time, Link growing up after being raised by the Kokiri who don't age. Zelda arguably at her best in her suspicion of Gdorf, under the protection of Impa, and the future reveal about Sheik felt huge at least at my age.

While OoT isn't in my top 3 Zelda, I actually do have an appreciation for its story even if that's not what you're playing a Zelda for. 8/10.

Hasn't been mentioned yet but Link's Awakening was always another good one in the Zelda stories ranking.

5.5. As others have said, it gets the extra point for the time twist, but characterization is very lackluster and basic. But hey, this was 1998 and Nintendo we're talking about here.

Storywise for Zelda: SS > WW > LA for my top 3.

Has aged a lot better than larger in scope narratives from the same timeframe.

Zelda has always been a series where there is a bit of something for everybody. Story is a part of that, it is one of the draws but not the key draw. After this one we will do a game that does a lot of different things all quite badly, story too.

Also Majoras Mask is not the most complex Zelda story or the best, that would be Breath of the Wild for the former and Skyward Sword for the latter.
