I don't think it's ever happened. I mean a direct payment and not autographed items. miguel cabrera of the tigers is getting close to 500 hrs and some of the talk is centered around this.

Don't they typically just find the fan who caught it and give them a sort of meet-and-greet with the player and maybe some other autographed stuff in exchange for the ball?

Originally the fan who caught A-Rods 3,000th hit ball refused to give up the ball for anything. Then the Yankees offered him a signed A-Rod bat and jersey, as well as a 150k donation to a charitable organization the fan happened to work with and they made the deal.

Maybe more often with the "first home run", though. Because they always get their first hit, and sometimes the first MLB hit is a homer
