That is a good question. I honestly do not know. I will say this though, it is pretty impressive that they occupy 75% of what many would consider to be the most athletic sport in the world.

I'd guess (armchair quarterback time) the main reason is similar to why most strongmen are white, or why most olympic weightlifters are chinese: it's a cultural/societal thing and there's a strong selection bias. There's no reason I know of that white men would be stronger at lifting weights than anyone else, but the sport of strongman seems to have a pretty niche interest. Chinese Weightlifting has a huge early age selection program.

Basketball is more pervasive but I think it's just a matter of popularity?

I was looking at lot of these summer games. And so many of them cost a lot of money to do. And many black people don't have as much extra money as white people on average.

iirc, it's a cultural thing, where in some communities, sports and/or entertainment are seen as being legitimate forms of success, so you see a lot of young people working towards that goal from a very young age.

like, there are successful black people in all types of positions, but if you're from a lower income area, it's not often you might come across a black lawyer, doctor, engineer, etc.

Part of it is cultural at this point in the US. And how kids are sectioned off to one sport from an early age. Most white dudes who could be actual NBA candidates are almost immediately funneled into the football/NFL slaughterhouse regimen. Getting into basketball is not even going to come up as a thought.

Because its heavily promoted in black communities in the USA and has been for decades , largely due to it being one of the only avenues black men were allowed to succeeded in following reconstruction and segregation. Leading to years of sports being lauded.

Charles Barkley expressed concern about this when he talked about visiting schools all over the country for years and asking kids what they wanted to do

He said most of the white and Asian kids were like "Lawyer! Doctors! Superhero! Video game designer! musician!"

While about 85+% of black kids were like "NFL! NBA! Boxer!"

Athletics seems to be socially accepted in some communities as the "The thing black people can do to earn fame , respect and money." no matter their background or if they're poor

There's only about 400 NBA players at any given time and hundreds of thousands of people who want to be one at any given time.

And in a vacuum that's fine but its kinda harmful that other avenues aren't being promoted.

Things are getting better though. For example black characters in movies and TV shows now have more role variety than they used to. You won't blink at a black doctor in a big American movie, pre 1990s people would.

And obviously Barack Obama and his influence can't be ignored

But yeah if you ever want to feel miserable look up what happened in the South after the civil war ended during reconstruction and the following 50/60 years

Deeply dark harrowing stuff, arguably the worst part of all American history in terms of needless cruelty and evil

European players caught up to the NBA as far as skill goes though. it's not like back in the day where Americans can run trains on any team.

but they still teach the fundamentals in international leagues and the WNBA. the NBA is on some other stuff right now lol.

The same reason soccer is so popular in poor rural countries. You just need a ball, something to move the ball into and a flat chunk of ground. Based on that, basketball is practically urban soccer.

Mostly due to evolution, blacks are generally more athletic because they evolved in the west where without horses and slow pray to hunt required more speed and endurance to survive then humans who evolved in the East or the Inuitz of the north.

Many black schools have low school funding and cant afford books, teachers, etc.

But every school has a basketball court....usually a football team, etc.

So while other students focus on other areas, black areas concentrate on the athletics.

I mean, it IS a fact that black people have less money than white people on average. For centuries, the United States intentionally tried to keep black people from earning wealth.

• Slavery. Black people weren't even considered people. Weren't allowed to learn to read or write.
• Jim Crow era. Black people weren't allowed to own homes in most areas or even rent apartments in most areas. Or go to most colleges.

Not to mention black people getting lynched by white mobs and having their families and property destroyed.

Not to mention the numerous race massacres that destroyed communities, black owned businesses, churches, etc. The burning of black wall street alone erased an untold among of generational wealth, and that's just one example out of many.

Not to mention all the black people who are still victims of a blatantly corrupt justice system and have been sitting in jail for decades for crimes they didn't commit. Some who get released are given paltry amounts of money by the states who failed them in "restitution."

Black people today still deal with their homes being appraised for much less value than the market in some areas.
