I think I first heard about him around 2008. Every few years he seems to do something increasingly more absurd, whether it was when he made videos of him jerking off or when he maced a GameStop employee. The more you learn about the backstory of Chris Chan, the more it seems like everything in his life was foreshadowing for what was to come. He is a relic of the weird mid 2000s era internet where shit was wild.

Chris Chan absolutely needs to be institutionalized and it's a failure of US social services that he hasn't been institutionalized for the past 20 years.

I wouldn't explain this to a 9 year old but here's a short version.

Chris Chan was a guy in his 20s who lived at home with his parents. He made poorly drawn comics of Sonichu, a character that was a mix of Sonic and Pikachu. It was clear these comics were a means for him to live out fantasies and often had sexual content in it.

He became known from making super conservative videos. They usually were also racist and homophobic. He'd go to college campuses and try to pick up girls by holding a sign that indicated his preferences, including "white", "virgin", "Christian", etc.

The internet (4chan) would troll the shit out of him. People would pretend to be girls and were able to get him to make videos of him jacking it or humping anime pillows.

In the early 2010s, he transitioned into a transgender woman. Some questioned his motives for this given he's been known for harassing women.

A few years ago, he was angry about some change to Sonic's design or something so he went to a Gamestop to start some shit and ended up pepper spraying an employee there.

His dad was like 90 years old and died a few years back leaving him with his 70 something year old mom. She's getting dementia. Their house looks like a dump. He went online and tried begging for money rather than getting a job or accessing social services.

Fast forward to this week, he raped his mom. This is where we're at with Chris Chan now.

He still refers to himself as a he, and he stated that the reason he's "trans" is because he thinks that increases his chances of having sex with lesbians, despite the fact he's also homophobic. It's just a misguided ploy by him to get laid.

Conservatives want universal healthcare, free college, green new deal, all drugs legalized, free housing for the homeless, police defunding and demilitarization, abolishing the death penalty, ending private prisons, guns banned, all our wars ended, military budget halved (if not cut more), rich getting heavily taxed, corporate money out of politics, and universal basic income? I wish I lived in a country where those are considered conservative positions.

I don't know a ton about Chris Chan but their life seems majorly tragic, untreated mental problems plus people cyberbullying and manipulating you are a deadly combo. It doesn't excuse what they did but it just shows how easily our system can fail people, I hope at the very least at the end of this awful tale they are at least granted the safety they're going to need in prison or wherever

I wish one day we can have a story involving trans people and people only talk about what's relevant to the story and not turn it into a argument about trans people

What little I've heard about Chris Chan indicates that institutionalization is probably something that would have been appropriate years ago. Sad. It would probably also be a good idea, considering the apparent stalking and harassment, to give Chris Chan a different identity, not to shield from the consequences of criminality, but to shut off what is clearly only doing damage.

I dunno, it's such a weird situation(anything with her is) I don't think it warrants attention quite frankly, I don't really think you should gatekeep stuff like being trans even if the person is misguided or even using it for predatory reasons. Also you can just, not care about pronouns if you're trans, strict preferred pronouns aren't really necessary to be trans.

At the end of the day, whether Chris identifies as a male, female or extra-dimensional entity is largely irrelevant to her current circumstances, she's still an awful person that need to be institutionalized.

I'm confused but I see what soma is saying. I leaned towards they as it's gender neutral and there does seem to be some ambiguity to the story, but I genuinely don't know how much any of what's being said is true, or still current. But it is true that she has she/her pronouns in her bio and I think the point here is what does the person asked to be called, not what do you think their gender is. I don't know if all trans people agree on it but I have no perspective to offer on it personally so I'd defer to people here who actually are trans

this doesnt matter. lots of trans people use different pronouns in different situations. she could use he/him pronouns for herself constantly; you should still use the pronouns she prefers for other people to call her.

i agree that it doesnt deserve attention in that nothing about her deserves attention, since she's only notable for being mass-bullied by a giant internet forum for a decade. but given that it is a news item i think its important to push people on this stuff -- refusing to accept somebody as trans because they're bad is basically saying that your acceptance of trans people is contingent on whatever you decide is sufficiently good behavior.

it's not a long hop from there to the way conservatives treat chelsea manning, for example
