Should one person be able to occupy more than one high political office?

For example, if this is allowed, President Trump could have nominated himself to the US Supreme Court and been simultaneously President and a Justice of the Supreme Court. Under (1), Trump could have nominated himself for a second and third seat on SCOTUS, so that ultimately he would have 3 votes there.

An extreme version of (1) is the first 300 or so years of the Roman Empire, where the person we now call an emperor simultaneously occupied all of the high offices of the Roman Republic for life.
