its brave to make a decision that you know millions will criticize you for in order to take care of yourself over making those people happy.

she knew she would get a lot of shit for it.

ironically, it should not be considered brave to do what she did, but people like you make it something that people to be scared to do

Arv doesnt care that she quits but to be called brave to be a quitter for something you signed up for its alittle odd alls she did was take a roster spot away from someone and glorify quitting

Well, it's somewhere inbetween. So far as I can tell she has the gymnastic equivalent of the yips, i.e. when a baseball player (usually second baseman) loses confidence and can't make the simple throw from 2nd to 1st.

If she's mentally out of sorts that way, knows it, and will probably fail...then yeah, she might as well withdraw.

Should the media praise her for "taking care of her mental health", though? No, I don't think that's the correct phrasing: that makes it sound like she has/had a long running issue and a break will help. Quitting on a stage of this size would, I imagine, set in the "yips" mindset more firmly. If it is as it appears I can give her credit for doing what might be best for her team under the circumstances, but it's not the "yea, mental health is being recognized" kind of story the media wants.

Hopefully she'll figure it out!

I think it was entirely up to her to take care of herself and step out of the running. Bravery should have nothing to do with it, but there is such a dangerous mindset that athletes shouldn't wuss out that it is problematic. No wonder some athletes take damage, both physical and mental, when it could have been avoided. The pressure to perform and the shame for quitting is as close to clinically insane as you can find in a society as a whole.

Do I think her brave or courageous? No more than is normal. We need normal.

You know what's cowardly? Pressuring athletes into making decisions that result in the premature ending of their careers, like what Kerri Strug's coach did to her. It is not laudable to break yourself for the short-term entertainment of others.

Pretty much. It shouldn't be a question of bravery/cowardice at all, just a matter of making an informed decision based on analyzing the risk (in which case, her decision is absolutely correct, given the extreme danger associated with "powering through" the problem). Because people get so uppity about it, making the decision in the face of that backlash is something that takes no small amount of courage.

The question I have is if the lectures and shame were anything on par with someone informing the LDS they would like their name legally removed from LDS record. Like more lectures, more shame, less of either?

she is one of the greatest if not the greatest gymnast of all time.

I would rather her look after her mental health than attempting to win some vanity medal and have a breakdown doing it.

I think it reflects classy on the United States that we allowed her to take time for her mental health. Sadly many here in the states do not have her option because our privatized healthcare system sucks.

what kinda health concern is it Arvs not buying the mental part because this is what shes been training for all her life

A huge part of gymnastics training is learning where your body is in space and how to keep track of that, even while spinning rapidly in multiple axes (since vision is largely useless for that). Every now and then, though, for reasons nobody completely understand (but it seems to be more common under stress), the brain will just lose that ability (commonly called "the twisties" among gymnasts and divers), reverting to its pre-training state and sometimes requiring months or years of training to recover it. Naturally, this can be extremely dangerous, because not being able to keep track of how much spinning you've done can make the difference between landing on your feet and landing on your head. There are many gymnasts throughout history that have tried to power through twisties, usually for a major competition, and ended up paralyzed for life (which, in several of those cases, meant ~6-10 more minutes after the landing).

In Biles' case, she was 1.5 spins through a 2.5-spin trick she was practicing, and she suddenly lost all sense of where the ground was. She managed to land it safely, but rather than pushing herself to compete in the Olympics (which involves many demanding jumps that would be extremely dangerous to attempt while so impaired), she opted to withdraw for safety's sake.

Ultimately, this should be seen as an injury that's keeping her from being able to compete safely. It's a mental injury, which means it's a lot harder to understand than a physical one, but she should be receiving no more backlash than if she decided not to compete after breaking her leg.
