Damn, I ordered something before I saw this.

Yeah, I'll not order tomorrow. They do deserve higher pay considering how shit DD treat the good ones. The fact that some have to live off tips is unacceptable, tbh.

As an aside, how does everyone tip?

I generally go 1 base with a dollar for every mile. An extra few dollars if it's a hassle(like if I'm ordering at a busy restaraunt or during rush hour.

If they're striking, wouldn't it be better to order?

I mean, if they are striking, there is no one to accept delivery orders, so they go unfulfilled, causing problems for the company. They'd have reimbursed restaurants and refund customers.

If there are no delivery people, and no orders, wouldn't that create less problems for them.

I trip 20% no matter what even if the order could go wrong (mistakes happen) then add more tip later if the service is good

I don't live in a big city. So the traffic is never bad and trip is never long. So I always go with 15% unless the tip is under 5 bucks. Then I pull it up 5. So never a tip lower than 5.

I usually do extremely small orders(just feeding myself). So, like, if I order some McDonald's or something after work(usually get home at like 12AM), the order comes out to about 12 bucks, maybe 13, then I add on a 2 dollar tip since it's just about a mile away and everything is usually in one bag, so it's a super easy delivery for them.

Same, I live outside the city, so traffic is easy.

5 dollars just seems like too much for a, like, 13 dollar order though lol.

That seems reasonable. I work at a Pizza Hut and most tips I've seen range from...about 0 to 2 bucks. But we've also gotten as high as 40 to 50 for bigger orders.

I have only done DoorDash as a driver and my worst experience in tips was running fast food to low income areas during peak lunch hour traffic.
Worst hour there was $4 total in an hour and best hour Ive run was $22.

But too busy to Dash this weekend so will help strike then I guess.

You are definitely making someone's day.

Though, if you want, I'd specify to split the tip(if it's a big one) between the cook and the driver. Cooks, from what I've seen, get the worst of it. They get no tips(CSRs will always pocket tips at every store I've worked at), and have the shittiest job by far. And they're the first ones to yell at when things go south.

It's an app you can download that basically works as a middleman for delivery for food places. Basically, they will have places listed on there and their menus, you can pick what food items you want. You do that, pay for your food. Then it goes to the store, they(usually) make it. Then people working for doordash can take the job and drive over there and pick up your food and deliver it to you.

And then doordash takes a large cut of the order itself, gives some(not enough) to the people working under it, then gives the tips that you set to the dashers.

Worst part is, originally, they didn't even give tips to dashers. Just a percentage. Ffs.

So how much more are people paying because they don't feel like driving to the store?

I can only see this being worth it if you have no vehicle or are on your deathbed and can't leave the house.

Depends on store to store. McDonald's keeps their prices relatively the same, for example. Maybe couple of cents higher for specific items. But it varies by store.

Other places jack up the price to ludicrous levels.

There's a pizza joint that is a 15 minute walk or a 2 minute drive from my house that keeps the prices the exact same.

Doordash also adds on a taxes and fees, as well as a delivery charge.

I'm confused on this. I've done doordash as a driver and before you accept any order you already know what you were getting tipped, you aren't forced to accept an order you can just hit decline and another order will be sent. I used to decline anything that was 3 dollars and under.

Did they change this in the last 6 months?

So how much more are people paying because they don't feel like driving to the store?

It can get pretty ridiculous in my opinion. I used them a lot during peak pandemic last year because I had a lot of credits (free money) and it was convenient. But for most of the places I go, it often broke down like this:

  1. Add ~20% to the price of the item (e.g. something I know that costs $12 at the restaurant is now like $13.50)
  2. $3 "service fee"
  3. $5 "delivery fee"
  4. Tip (I usually do ~$8 since that's what actually goes to the drivers)
So if I order $30 worth of food (if I would have driven there and picked it up at the counter), it usually comes to over $50. So I rarely use it anymore unless I have discounts or credits to offset that.

The bigger chains are usually a bit better about the top item (not hiking up the base prices).

That being said I don't often use DD but it's nice to have that option to have something other than pizza or Jimmy John's delivered when you don't feel like leaving the house for whatever reason.

I've actually tried a few restaurants I wouldn't have ever driven to bc they were on door dash.
