Hmm.

I know that the vast majority of child porn these day is created by the children themselves via webcam and sexting strangers (and created in far greater amounts than ever before at that) who they think of as "friends" or whatever since every kid has a cellphone these days. Kids are also able to circumvent most parental controls, if their parents even bother to make the gesture in the first place. Basically it seems like an unclosable Pandora's box kinda situation where as long as you have kids, the internet, and porn the three are going to get all mixed up together. In a situation like that maybe trying to mitigate things by openly letting kids watch certain kinds of porn would help. I mean when I was a kid and got caught looking at naughty magazines back in the day I distinctly remember being scolded and told it was bad because it degraded women, what if I had been looking at something that didn't though?

...Or we could solve the problem by just not having any more kids and breaking the conditions for the problem existing in the first place, just a thought.

Many others have made the same point/concept of how extreme the porn is and that we need more "vanilla" or "wholesome" porn, while saying it'd be helpful for people in general and not feeling the need to zone in on "kids".
WTF was she thinking?
I swear, some people just don't re-read or bounce ideas off anyone before hitting post/submit when they're going into topics where they really, really should.
It's like that gay choir in SF recently. Their message was basically, "we'll teach the younger generation to accept us even if you try to teach them hate," and would've been fine. But they had to go and word it as literally, "we're coming for your children." (yes, that's verbatim from the song, checked again to make sure) Anyone reading back those lyrics should've been like, "uh...maybe we could word this differently...."

I've seen people advocate for showing kids porn in sex ed, under the rationale that it provides an opportunity to examine it critically and understand what is and isn't realistic so they develop mroe reasonable expectations around sex. Naturally, the reaction was about on par with what this lady got, but I think there's some merit to the idea. As much as people would like to pretend otherwise, pretty much anyone that's started puberty is going to be checking out porn at some point or another. Might as well preempt that and give them that experience in a controlled environment where they can have questions answered and misconceptions addressed.

Pretty much, although the problem is still that once people start watching the vanilla stuff, they eventually move onto the other areas. Plus sex addictions are more common to get at younger ages because the brain is still developing (which, for boys, doesn't stop until 25; I think girls might be the same or sooner)

The real problem is that showing kids porn wouldn't help anyway, because it isn't really the PORN that's the sticking point.

For people who accept the premise that porn can desensitize people and impede the formation of healthy relationships and psychosexual patterns of behavior, the problem is more the social side of the equation rather than the physical one, and the idea of idealizing the partner into a sex object rather than seeing them as a person. Pretty much any sort of porn is potentially going to exacerbate that problem - even in purely softcore or straight missionary porn, you're effectively fetishizing the object of lust and leading to a disconnect.

If anything, what we should probably have instead of sex ed is a relationship ed class. And I don't mean those BS health classes where they randomly pair kids up and give them an egg or a bag of flower or a robot doll to take care of as parents, I mean a class that actually gets into the more psychological aspects of social interaction, and explores the emotional and interpersonal elements of relationships to encourage people to see each other more as actual people and not just sex objects - that's more what leads to porn addiction, desensitization, and the downward spiral that leads people to see out more and more taboo and transgressive sexual fantasies to get off on.

The real problem is that most of the classes we should be teaching in schools (stuff like this, organizational and long-term planning, life skills that will actually come in handy after you graduate, etc) would require a massive and near-complete overhaul of our educational system from the ground up (and half the population would probably object to it anyway), and that's way too much work. Easier to just teaching the same curriculum that people came up with years ago even if it doesn't really have practical applications anymore and wait for it to become someone else's problem later.

Hence my usual joke about having seen so much porn on the Internet, that I can now no longer get off unless I'm watching a video of a midget fisting a nun.

Though I've been making that joke for like 15 years now, so at this point probably even that wouldn't get me off unless the nun was a trap, the midget was a furry, and both of them are related.

I have long enjoyed the idea of there being porn made to actually inform people about proper care, consent, arousal, basic positions, etc., while actually showing the acts rather than the diagrams we got in Sex Ed in school. Do it right and make it available so that even those unfortunate teens in hyper-religious backgrounds will have a better understanding of how things do or don't work going into adulthood. This includes topics on STDs, LGBT+ awareness, and so on.

Don't target kids outright, nor bar what things look like just because kids might see it (because they certainly will thanks to the Internet), but encourage some proper education with some level of practicality. "This is what a condom is, what it does, and how to use it. No, really, we are showing you its use. Enjoy the show."

I will say the other problem (if I'm being serious rather than sarcastic) is that we kind of have to pinpoint the best time to teach a class like that, and unfortunately that may not be a universal window even for kids of the same age group.

I know that when I was in school, they did the stereotypical "separate all the boys and girls into different rooms and talk about their bodies" thing for me twice - in 4th or 5th grade we got the purely "clinical" lectures, and in 10th grade we got the "Okay, we're talking about sex now" class. But the problem is that most of us simply didn't care or process the information in any meaningful way in elementary school, and by high school most of us had already gotten our sex ed from other kids, porn, or some other source and mostly ignored everything they were trying to teach because "yeah, I already know all this" (I mean, if you're teaching this stuff when kids are 16 but they already know a girl who's a single mother at 14, you've kind of missed your opportunity).

So we basically need to maximize the point where the kids will be receptive to the material, but also not already blas about it. And we have to figure out a way to teach it that doesn't come across as either so clinical or so cringe that they immediately tune it all out. AND we have to be aware that at least some kids are going to be ready for that lecture earlier and some aren't going to get anything out of it until later.

And then it gets even messier when you start taking into account socioeconomic divisions and culture (if statistics on teen pregnancy are younger in urban areas or "ethnic" communities, does that mean we should teach those things earlier there, or would there be too much pushback against that for being racist?).

It might be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to come up with a single universal curriculum that would work for all students.

(The sad part is, the dream of sci-fi nerds and introverts everywhere that we'd eventually evolve towards a fully personalized education model where students interact solely with computers that teach at their own pace and at their own level of comprehension could potentially help here... but if the last year or so is any indication, fully isolated/targeted education without direct instruction or interaction with a teacher in person might be detrimental for a lot of kids - the last year or so of distance learning has resulted in a lot of problems. That COULD be because we weren't ready for it, and the infrastructure and planning in place was sorely lacking, or it could reflect a fundamental disconnect with how humans actually learn that will always be an issue. Not to mention socialization issues in general.)

Right, there is mental maturity to consider. People grow in different ways at different rates. There are some basics that should be taught early, some warnings, and then there are more dedicated lessons not everyone is ready for by 12, 16, or 20 years old. These are things that need to be addressed, but I do not see that happening in the US or UK any time soon. Not in any meaningful manner.

Just imagining what kids can see on the internet now while they are developing is scary af. Seriously, do young boys think women are really like that? Do young girls believe they are supposed to act like that?

I'm pretty sure most teens have unrestricted access to the internet some place or another since you can access it from phones, laptops, ipads, libraries (don't think they censor libraries either as I've seen (VERY CREEPY) dudes watching porn at libraries before.

The internet came out after I was out of school (significantly after) so there was no massive amounts of porn etc online back then. I don't even know what it's like to go to school with other kids who have access to all the depraved stuff they show on those sites (I'm not a massive porn fan, and while not a prude, there is tons of porn that is a big turn off for me or goes way to far. If I had grown up with it everywhere though, I might be a very different person.

Wasn't that a thing for awhile, like 20-30 years ago? Porn with actual plots/movies etc? I think they kinda started off with things like the Toxic Avenger and then esclalated to real porn. I don't really follow the industry so I don't know if that kept going, still is around or even really took off (Though I did see the Toxic Avenger and a few other movies like that). I always like sci-fi, fictional super hero shows etc and alot of that semi-crossed over in like the 80's and 90's.
