This is about as good as it gets for how to do a remake (haven't played FF7 yet)

I have to say this is the new bar for doing remakes... doesn't have to be the gold standard, but this is the, umm, bar.

is that the game where you can literally stun lock every enemy and boss including the last boss?

also, how far did you get in Inquisitor?

I, errr, aahh... You can stun lock but the stuns don't last very long - bosses have a rather enjoyable large health pool to avoid this. it's the previous game, Secret of Mana, where you can stun lock everything.

...

And I beat Inquisitor, but I have no DLC

Ya, I didn't know there was post-game stuff until, like, this morning so I'll probably turn it on again.

Aside from Black Rabite, but I knew about that from the original

you can't stunlock bosses in SoM

it might have been Legends of Mana I'm thinking of

Inquisitor: Prophecy completes the story. can't say I recommend it though other than that.

heheh, oh yes you most certainly can - infact it makes bosses entirely trivial

Well, at least that proves you aren't an evil person. Usually when people comment how annoying her voice is tells me they probably watch horror movies as instructional videos.

hmmm.

in SoM, bosses can only be hit once every few seconds, and only on particular frames (many of them have a "shield" that you can't see that makes them immune to attack in certain directions or at certain times)

not to mention that your character also needs to recharge their attack

(ok now that I think of it, yes you can totally do it with magic since you can stop time with magic and there are no similar protections to it)

in the game I saw (Legends of Mana I guess) you could just walk up to any enemy or boss and attack normally, and it would stun lock them if you just kept going. it was very obvious and easy to do.

but yeah, I guess that is similar to magic in SoM where if you just use magic at normal strength you annihilate any boss.

I haven't played SD3, but I am aware of many of its keypoints and watched my bro play some of it.

After beating Trials I watched a Let's Play of SD3 and the remake, despite being all new from the ground up - is shockingly faithful to the source material. I mean, you can be standing on a piece of mountain in 3D and know exactly what room it was in the original.

The original had a strange combo building system, this was replaced with a very similar system that works better in a 3D environment

...

Now, compare that to the Secret of Mana remake... that one does virtually everything wrong. Even though it's mostly 2D with just some 3D assets - somehow it makes even the 2D look worse and almost every sound/pacing cue in scenes is wrong resulting in a rather jarring experience.

Well how about that

Trials of Mana adds an outright extra chapter to the game as a sorta DLC... unnecessary, but cool

I don't even remember most of the story and I beat it like 3 or 4 times. I'm healthy, exercise every day, I don't consume much sugar and yet still I can't remember a damn thing. I'm so sick of getting old.

That's ok, about 1/3 the way through I started skipping all cutscenes anyways - Trials of Mana has a very good "game" story, where it's there for flavour and not for any deeper meaning... so skip skip skip, get back to the fighting!

It's funny, I played Trials of Mana and FF7:R back to back and it felt like a Goofus and Gallant comic. Trials of Mana was one of the best remakes (in terms of how it was faithful to the source material, while still modernizing it and improving the mechanics to make a fun game) I'd ever played. It is a sin that this game didn't get a bit of a bigger budget, as it could have been legendary instead of just very good.

By contrast, FF7:R was a game that, to me, felt like all flash and no substance, where they tacked on a bunch of extraneous shit to a segment of a game that had been teased out to be way longer than it should have been. Whenever the game actually got out of its own way, pulled its head out of its ass and got around to being a game (which was usually the parts of the game that were in the original), it was fantastic, but there was so much fluff in between that it was an absolute chore to play through.

Dunkey had probably the most accurate review of the game I've seen to date: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Qlf3b9wa4s

To be fair - I'm not objected to a remake changing the plot as long as it, like, is faithful to the motivations of the original characters... that's why FF7:R has me so dang curious

That's how Legend of Mana works, and it's one of my few complaints about the game.

I don't necessarily mind the plot change so much as the fact that FF7:R feels like it's just incredibly padded out and filled with half-baked ideas that they don't bother to ever actually expound on.

If I had 14 million dollars I'd get Breath of Fire 2 remade in the style of Trials of Mana... it should work just fine

They tried it with Lufia 2, but that was a disaster

I remember Lufia because I liked the slot machines. Breath of Fire 2 definitely would be a great remake if they did it just like that. I remember reading over the giant strategy book many times. In high school at the lunch table. That was one of the first games my friends had too so we could talk about it while we played it.
