And theyll still go straight to the hospital if they start getting bad symptoms and ask doctors for help. The same doctors that begged them to get vaccinated to prevent them from having to go to the hospital if they get sick.

Omicron becomes infectious/detectable in nearly half the time of prior variants.

So it spreads much, much faster in addition to spreading easier.

I don't want to be that guy but in fairness if there are more tests it's more likely the people who are being tested have the virus since they're getting tests probably because they fear they have it.

More just trying to make the situation seem not QUITE as alarming as it seems to be. Not quite.

COVID is just irritating the shit out of me at this point. It's day 16 and the only symptom I've had since like day 7 is a horrible cough that if anything has gotten worse rather than better.

I've felt perfectly fine other than having to cough really badly from time to time.

Deaths lag cases, so we should probably give it a week at least, though I don't think it's going to spike the same way (if at all).

I've said this a few times but "the media is gonna media". There's no story behind "people get sick for a week then feel better". So they manufacture and hype up whatever they need to do to fill 24 hours of coverage.

Yeah even if super high case counts don't translate into more deaths than the peaks of previous waves it's looking quite likely that there may be a period of a few weeks where enough people are out sick to seriously disrupt society. We're already seeing it somewhat with tons of flights being cancelled due to staffing shortages, etc.

I just spent two full days without power, 24 hours longer than I've ever experienced, and it's because central Virginia got absolutely clobbered by a snow storm that was effectively like getting an inch of ice. The local power company had such a small staff initially that they barely were able to get anything going after the first day and only got like 10-15% back on the next. I'm lucky to have it back now after two days.

They've brought in power crews from other states by now, but I seriously wonder if covid was responsible for a lot of the short staffing initially. It's such a bad confluence of events.

Some good news from the CDC director.

Asked about a new study showing how successful vaccines have been in preventing serious illness and whether that should provoke rethinking about how to live with the virus in perpetuity, Walensky answered: "The overwhelming number of deaths, over 75%, occurred in people who had at least four comorbidities. So, really, these are people who were unwell to begin with. And yes, really encouraging news in the context of Omicron; this means not only just to get your primary series but to get your booster series. And yes, we're really encouraged by these results."

Theyre finally admitting the obvious - dying from or with covid are two different things and that your overall health matters, plus it looks like Omicron is pretty mild for most people. So if youre healthy, young, and boosted up it looks like you should be good.

Does anyone know how long after being positive I have to wait to get a booster? Im getting a bunch of different answers from people.

I don't have the source here, but the data the CDC director is talking about here is solely vaccinated people - as in, the vast majority of people who die after being vaccinated had at least four comorbidities.

Non-vaccinated data is assuredly different.

No idea how long about waiting to get the booster after being positive but I thought I'd heard, back when the vax was originally made available, that you're supposed to wait quite a few months.

Yes, it's good news about the comorbidities thing, except...there's a significant chunk of the population that has at least some of those things, whether it's being fat/obese, diabetes, old, heart issues, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.

I read some stuff saying that it's safe to get a different brand than your first time but are there any benefits to doing so, barring obvious things like allergic reactions and whatnot.

There was a study that suggested that a Moderna third dose is somewhat more effective (regardless of which vaccine you got initially), though I believe that was with a full dose for the booster (in practice in the US the Moderna booster is a half dose). That same study found that 3x Moderna was somewhat more effective than 2x Moderna + Pfizer booster. Its pretty unambiguous that an mRNA booster is more effective than a J&J booster regardless of what you got initially (Im not even sure if J&J boosters are approved?)

There's another "subvariant" outcompeting Omicron in Denmark now. All that's known about it is that it evolved from Omicron, so nothing is known about Omicron infection protecting against this one. I would assume it's more protective than past infection with the original variant, Alpha or Delta, at least. Also recency of Omicron infection would obviously also be a factor.

However Denmark is loosening restrictions (still pretty solid masking and vaccination requirements) so maybe the official opinion on the Omicron subvariant isn't one of particular concern.

In other epidemiological news, H5N6 'avian flu' is back on the table. There's been a rash of infections in China and "no confirmed human-to-human transmission." All the other outbreaks failed to demonstrate human-to-human transmission so I'm inclined to think it's just super prevalent in poultry at this time. Still something to keep an eye on. (not that our personal surveillance makes a difference given how disastrous it would be if it could transmit among human, but I digress)

My Covid symptoms journey so far:

Day 1: Few random sniffles and coughs, otherwise fine.
Day 2: Mild sore throat and runny nose. Fatigue and headache arrived in the middle of the day, went to go get tested. Results came back later that evening as inconclusive.
Day 3: Heavy fatigue and severe sore throat. The worst day. Slept most of the day. Went to get tested again. Results came back positive that evening. Other symptoms: Loss of appetite, congestion.
Day 4: The second worst day. Mostly a rinse and repeat of Day 3 with slightly less fatigue. Managing a severe, raw sore throat is exhausting. Constant cough drops, teas, liquids, medicines. All temporary cures.
Day 5: Recovery begins. Energy starts returning more as the fatigue begins to diminish. Sore throat is slightly less severe but still an issue. Loss of appetite and congestion continue. New symptom: Night Sweats.
Day 6: Recovery continues, but makes little progress. Each day a little more energy, a little less severe sore throat. Night sweats returned for another night. New symptom: earache.
Day 7: Energy is back to what one would call normal. Still tire a bit easy but otherwise alert. Sore throat is very manageable but still present. Congestion is also very weak, but still present on occasion. The earache has become more prominent which is my biggest concern.

All of these are known Omicron symptoms. Though I might contact my doctor if the earache gets worse.
