All because of people who 1) choose to not get vaccinated, and 2) disobey business requests, i.e. going without masks while unvaccinated

He has the exact same posting style as a (supposedly) conservative race baiting troll on Politics board. Right down to bringing up his own race as some kind of gotcha or legitimacy for his shitty viewpoints. Either it's an alt, copycat or random dumbass. Given how small this place is though I'm betting on one of the first two.

It's almost as if they should never have said it was okay to stop requiring masks in the first place.

Who could possibly have foreseen such an outcome?

Only a truly brilliant and somewhat sexy stud of a man could have predicted that a poorly-worded statement issued by people who seem to lack anything resembling a grasp of sociology was going to backfire spectacularly. If only such a glorious specimen of manhood had said something at the time (and not been ignored).

I just think it's hilarious how the same people who were screaming stuff like "Trust the science!" and "The CDC knows more than you ever could, don't rely on your own feelings/thoughts/research and just do whatever they tell you to do!" followed along and hand waved contradictory bullshit like how they said masks weren't needed back when this started, as long as they were making people more frightened, but the second they say something optimistic and in the opposite direction suddenly they're a bunch of heartless idiots who can't be trusted. If they do fully flip flop on this I expect their fanatics turned detractors to flip flop accordingly.

I think youre over generalizing but youre right. There is some level of hypocrisy that has taken place for some. These are strange times. But I think it is clear that the only way we can actually start to get this country back on the right track is by most of us agreeing to work together towards common goals.

Things will never get any better while people are split down the middle like this. If we find out things about covid in the future then we have to react to that information even if it proved that what we are doing now is the wrong approach.

The problem is, that split doesn't just apply to Covid - and it's never going away because neither side is really willing to understand or compromise with the other, and the Internet only exacerbates and radicalizes extreme positions. No one's ever really going to listen to or accept the other's position when everyone views everyone else who disagrees with them as "the enemy", and dismisses them out of hand.

The split is likely to continue getting much, much worse over the next few decades, not better.

People blamed Trump for causing the divide (and the hostility), but it was already growing long before that. The blowback of the last five years was more a symptom than a cause.

Fact 1: "Masks don't work" was stated in the context of preventing you from catching covid. Common masks being used by most people are relatively ineffective at preventing one from inhaling viral particles. Standard surgical masks are mostly intended to prevent a care provider from spewing pathogens onto a patient. When care providers are dealing with patients that have serious communicable disease, additional equipment is needed (including face shields and respirators). All of this information was known long before covid.

Fact 2: wearing a mask can result in increased likelihood of contracting disease when not done properly. Mishandling your mask by touching the inside surface (bad) with your fingers (the most likely things to touch contaminated surfaces); touching your face accidentally (again with dirty fingers) while trying to place, adjust, or remove your mask similarly can increase transmission. Ideal solution is to wash your hands before handling your mask and only touching the ear loops. This was all known long before covid.

Fact 3. People with covid symptoms were explicitly told to self quarantine if they had any symptoms. People with covid symptoms should NOT be out in public except for testing or receiving medical care, and they were instructed to wear a mask when going to the doctor to reduce the chances they would spread it to health care providers.

Fact 4. Before late March/early April, it was thought that covid was spread by people with symptoms.

With these observations in mind, it is clear why surgical/cloth masks were not recommended for asymptomatic people out in public. Note that it wasn't "we recommend (asymptomatic) people don't wear masks," it was "we do not recommend (asymptomatic people) wear masks." If you do not see the difference, try reading that again. If you think backlash against masks is bad now, imagine if it was recommended that everyone wear masks regardless of symptoms before there was evidence it was necessary.

Which brings us to ...

Fact 5. Starting in late March, it became evident that people with asymptomatic and mild covid were major drivers of spread. At this point, there was a rationale for universal masking in public: because you may be spreading covid while entirely unaware of it. While not that effective at preventing you from inhaling viral particles, surgical and cloth masks do catch a great quantity of them trying to escape your body while breathing, talking, and sneezing.

Important detail to add. The CDC recommendations are for areas with high transmission risk (COVID hot spots) while indoors in public places. If your county has a low case load / high vaccination rate, masks are not recommended to be required for vaccinated people.

The CDC is not exploring the idea of recommending that all vaccinated people wear masks indoors no matter where they live or how much the virus is circulating in their community.

Except that's not really the case at all, and most of the people complaining aren't really complaining for the reasons you're implying.

It's more a case of...

The CDC: Okay, the research suggests people won't need to wear masks if they're vaccinated.

Idiots: Hey, did you hear that? Everybody can take their masks off now!

The CDC: No, that's not what we said.

Idiots: Everybody can take their masks off! Woo! Party!

...

Idiots: Hey, wait, why are the infection numbers going up?

The CDC: Because you didn't actually listen to what we said. Also, everyone should probably start wearing masks again because you're all fuck-ups.

Idiots: Waaah! The CDC are evil and stupid!

It also doesn't help when the US can't even get to 70% immunized to at least get something resembling herd immunity because stupids gotta stupid.

But hey, I'm sure everyone will happily take personal responsibility and the blame for not getting vaccinated once we end up with a resistant strain and we wind up going back into another year-long lockdown, though. Everyone will obviously treat it with seriousness and the respect that it deserves, and will in no way blame literally everyone other than the people who are actually responsible for being fuck-ups. Or demand for it to end early because they're tired of being cooped up or having to be inconvenienced in any way.

Which would be fine if it wasn't something that had such a high fatality rate and multiple long-term severe side-effects.

The only real hope at this point is that it'll eventually mutate down into something less virulent (which is how viruses usually evolve long-term), but that doesn't really help in the short-term at all.

Plenty of people who claimed they were to be listened to without question before got their panties in a bunch and started questioning them for this "horrible" choice, that's a fact. I mean I'm not even saying they were wrong to complain, I'm not vaccinated and I ditched my mask a few weeks before that even and haven't worn one in public since so the whiners were correct but it just goes to show their orginal point about the CDC was always bullshit and that they're a bunch of hypocrites.

Sub 2% and only if you disregard the vast number of cases that go undetected because they're asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms as well as disregard that 80% of fatalities have preexisting conditions meaning the covid in concert with other illnesses is what kills them not just the covid, as well as disregard both the artificial and situational bloat in that number from various sources.
