8/10, it's sweet and it's told in a clever way without trying to do too much, it seems quaint now but there wasn't a lot of stuff like this 8 years ago (I didn't play it until later, but even after playing Life is Strange I found it to be a satisfying little experience).

Great use of environmental storytelling. It plays off your expectations and subverts them really expertly. I think the ending is partly amazing but also too much of a happily ever after.

I'm utterly exhausted by tragic gay stories where gay people don't get to be happy so this earned Gone Home some huge points for me

6.5/10

I've soured on this one a little bit since its release, but I still enjoy many of its storytelling elements. I like how grand in scope this rather simple slice-of-life arc can feel; you can find yourself easily caught up in a house of horrors or conspiracy thriller much like you would discovering weird, new things in your own house before coming to the conclusion that the stuff you were obsessed with is just sort of sad, depressing, and mundane, distracting yourself from the real problems. The decision to sit the narrative in a "new" house was smart; you feel alienated and much like a voyeur touching things you're not supposed to, but also like a detective slowly piecing the narrative together. Sure, many games have you going around unknown environments, collecting & touching things but not many take the care to make it feel as personal as Gone Home does. As for the narrative itself; it's rather run-of-the-mill if you ask me. I don't think it particularly brings anything new to the table about lesbian relationships and familial acceptance but it's still a story with decent emotional weight and a decently hopeful if also melancholic ending, though more in its ambiguity than stating an outright conclusion. It's not quite the barnburner it was touted as, but it's still worth a playthrough if you ask me.

I get this and I agree to an extent. I think a tragic/downer ending would have undermined a lot of the game's themes, not to mention the issue you brought up. But I also think teenagers, even in a very happy relationship, probably haven't found their true love. To me that's just like, an implication of heartbreak down the road? Idk maybe I'm just cynical.

yeah another indie walking game I give huge story credit too but I loved Gone Home

The story of Sam and Lonnie is excellent and probably gets an 8 at least on its own, but what sells it for me as expert storytelling is the tiny details. The note from the mom complaining about Kaitlyn leaving all the lights in the house on (which, unless you're a sociopath or something, the player almost certainly was too). The many old copies of the dad's book in the study, with a set of new copies by a different publisher in the garage. The brochure for marriage counseling. All the vaguely unsettling implications about the uncle they inherited the house from. The way it plays into horror tropes to get you to prepare for the worst, despite each instance having a rational, in-game explanation. While Sam's obviously the focus, you get a strong overview of each significant character without ever meeting them, and it's almost entirely optional, depending completely on how invested the player is in piecing everything together.

I couldn't figure out how to phrase it but I absolutely agree with this, this was the most interesting part of the game for me.

8.5, great use of atmosphere to subvert your expectations. The story is something that would have come out as an Indie movie/romance back in the 90s and become an underground classic, but it works even better as a game IMO.

7.5, very sweet, very well told (and good use of story and gameplay), however I wish they hadnt bait and switched so hard. Not to say that I wanted that ending, just dont do all that set up only so you can swerve later.

I feel like the execution of Gone Home's gameplay really held it back, but the story itself wasn't too bad. It definitely would have worked better as some sort of other interactive fiction (maybe a point-and-click adventure or a visual novel).
